Try it loose. I think that if u just loose then handle it works with the handle as well but just loosen it AND using rubber band will make it very smooth and close to perfect
Thank you so much for this tip! I did put this into practise last weekend and I must say it made quite a difference. No jelly effect even at 300mm and 3x digital zoom with Canon 600d!
That gas to be a Manfrotto rubberband. No way a walmart rubberband could do that. But seriously, wouldn't you feel like a dork doing that at a public event?
This video alone, while browsing reddit.com/r/DIY, blew my mind. Shared, Favorited, Liked, and Subscribed. Thank you! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
Thanks mate! had seen this video few months back and just few days back got an opprtunity to work on a short-film where i used your trick successfully....
wow man, so plus the camera do i have to invest in a rubber band?..mmm i cannot afford it, LOL, amazing trick, very helpful and cheap, thank you very much for sharing!!!
@adam3176 Currently, the so called "rubber inertia detainer ring" used in this docu-drama is the only one in existence. However, I have a manufacturing plant that can supply you one for $29.99 US plus S&H ...But if you order now I'll double that offer!
I have a good fluid head tripod with a pretty smooth action, but this has taken it up a notch. It has the effect of slow start, slow finish to a pan. It's bloody genius!
@OrsonMyles That doesn't work as well unless you want the effect of a binocular lens. It sounds ok in theory, but when you watch back, the results can sometimes be obvious.
For a wide angle panning, if you look at the shadow on the grass, when the camera turns, the shadow changes because the horizon line and feild of view moves, if you were keyframing a wide angle photo, those line wouldn't move giving you the appearance of either telephoto, or the whole camera moving vertical and horizontal.
If you are looking for quality, original, hassle free, inexpensive, legal soundtrack music for your next Youtube video or short film....try "Rumblefish Friendly Music" Just follow the link in the "About Me" section on my page. Only $1.99 per track. (Some good songs...not just library music)
dam, i've been taking apart fan's, buyig some logic boards from radio shack, getting some transformers a other memory chips.. Programing them from my computer... I've been using rubbers and didn't know i can use them like this... hahahahah jP

what works really fine with a DSLR is actually filming very wide. than in your editing program zoom into the video and pan it with keyframing
