We had a grease fire today. Specifically, I caused it. I always thought until today that I was pretty good under pressure. All I could think of was "OMIGOD, I DESTROYED MY CHILDHOOD HOME!!!!" Those exercises where you think "What would I grab if my house was on fire?" didn't matter: I didn't think at ALL. Luckily, my dog was thinking enough to get outside and my mom was fast in getting the baking soda. Our microwave was the only thing destroyed. Sweet God, it could have been worse.
we had a grease fire in our home today. thankfully it was minor and we got it taken care of quickly, but i'm a little traumatized and afraid to cook with butter and grease now. :C
when i was in high school we had a science class room that had a scolded black roof...and us students always use to annoy the teacher to tell us what it was, one day he did...he got a shot glass sized about of oil super heated it, waited for it to catch fire then sprayed water on it...
needless to say we found out why the class room was blackened.
massive fireball, i think there may have been some singe hair also
@steventean salt is not necessary. baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is the active ingredient in fire extinguishers because when heated it released carbon dioxide and it smothers the fire. the reason it is called baking soda is because when it is heated and releases carbon dioxide it causes doughs to rise.
@steventean Water and oil don't mix, Water sinks under oil when you put them in the same container because oil is lighter
Dumping water into hot oil causes it to sink rapidly, and boil instantly upon contact with the heated vessel the oil is in, causing the oil to be carried upwards rapidly by steam, where, if it's on fire or can ignite, it will flash up like a fuel-air explosive
Don't use a damp wash cloth unless you were dumb enough to not have the lid next to the pot. A properly fitting lid will work the best. Put the lid on, turn off the heat, then leave it there to cool.
Yeah...hear the kids scream....lol. The guy was laughing XD. If there is a grease fire, turn off the heat, put a SLIGHTLY damp washcloth over the pan(dont want to too dry,or it catches on fire, dont want it too wet to where it drips into the fire.). The fire should go away.
i understand but have you herd of the charlston 9 my dad had to do color guard for them and well it was there hole fire department that was wrong cause they didnt wear masks and they were not as a team together they were all split up and i am just scared one day it will flash on them
just as long as its not anywhere close to the edge of the roof you should be fine unless you really care about your grass but if your like me you dont have any
Totally not fake. Anyone that believes this is fake should walk into your kitchen right now, start a grease fire then dump a glass of water onto it! You'll find out just how fake it really is.
First off, It's not fake. Second he is demonstrating what happens if you attempt to extinguish a grease fire with water.
The reason the fire expands so rapidly is because when water turns to steam it expands 1700 times from its size as water. When you pour a cup of water into a pot of flaming grease it will sink to the bottom and boil then instantly evaporate, expanding and throwing flaming grease out of the pot.
Yes, I saw the propane tank too. I thought this was the Fire Brigade, and they are quite stupid if they put the propane tank directly under the fire...
When he covered it the oxygen in the pan was used up, when he uncovered it the oxygen flowed back in and caused it to reignite, because the oil was still above its flash point. This is basically the same thing that happens in a back draft
That is true, although he is not demonstrating that, only how to displace the oxygen and put the fire out. Your reply to my comment should have been your first comment to avoid becoming mixed up.
I work at McDonald's with giant multi-galloned vats of grease. Shivers go down my spine knowing that some idiot work would throw water on a grease fire if one would break out.
I am a Training Officer in my dept., and I plan on doing a training with the guys similar to this one...I like the partial room, it add a reality touch to it...Very good! 5 stars
I get the point but the viewer is at a disadvantage because the camera is positioned at the fireman's backside for the most part and the sound quality is poor with the motor in the background.

@steventean water evaporates the moment it his the hot oil, hydrogen and oxygen gases are both flammable.
