  • quel talent, sacrès batteur pour cette époque !

  • how the fuck could you give this a thumbs down?

  • I started playing the drums when i was about 12, took lessons and played until about 16 or so before I got into other instruments/DJing. Watching videos like this brings me right back to those days. I can't wait to splurge on a new set and get back into it. Thanks for uploading this. They just don't make em like this anymore!

  • clams clams clams calms

  • @jellyboy123 yeah yours. You should try closing it.

  • ts ts ts ts ts ts , pa pum pa pum pa pum pa pum !! great song !

  • pure genius

    a pURE-BREAD RACE HORSE

    P.BONHAM MAVRAKIS

  • This clip brings back one of my greatest music memories. I sat no more than 10 feet away from this arguably finest drummer ever when he performed at Ronnie Scotts in London in 1979. I was 18 and a friend and I had a table right at the front and remember the two of us sitting there spellbound as we watched Buddy do this version of West Side Story. I feel so lucky and i will never ever forget it. Thank you to whoever uploaded this. It is now in favourite 'box' on my iPhone YouTube app!

  • how about buddy as the vladimir horowitz of the drum world.

  • Yeah, Buddy's talent never faltered. Even as he got older, he still had that blistering snare-work. He's probably the best, but at least in my top 3 (Steve Gadd's my favorite). I'm a guitarist, not a drummer, but I love great drummers because they make me play up to my potential (so I understand why guys like Rich and James Brown were so-hard on their band-members - If they don't play up to their potential, then HE can't either).

I've played a lot with a guy in my area who plays just like him.

  • Buddy is like fine wine. He gets better with the years!

  • For Christs sake, use your ears! If all you get out of listening to Buddy Rich is "great technique" you need to learn your lesson. Buddy was a giant of jazz, improvisation, all aspects of drumming(greatest brush player ever!). he had an amazing, unique musical and personal life. I recommend Mel Thorme´s bio on Buddy, "Traps the drum wonder".

  • IMHO, Buddy Rich is probably the best jazz drummer that ever played. He began playing drums professionally at the age of 18 months when he performed during his parent's vaudeville act. And, when he died in 1987, at the age of 69 he was still playing and touring. This video shows him and his band playing Westside Story. His technique is flawless.

  • What a legend he was. For me the greatest drummer that ever lived. Some player...

  • oops, almost for got, travis barker is god!!!

  • in the opening of buddy's solo his expression is like...yeh im this good

  • When I was a kid living in California I saw him perform live many times at Disneyland. He was the greatest inspiration. We still love you Buddy. Check out my tributes to him on here (a few short drum solos of mine). To all the rock drummers out there, don’t lose touch with the past. There are many things to learn from the rich heritage all those jazz drummers left us “back in the day”. Richard Gray

  • this is when metallica was born

  • @TheMASDrummer Lars Ulrich will never amount to 1% of the talent shown here.

  • During the period when Ludwig was riveting pearl finishes to their drums. Maybe the worst era of the company. Hey, what happened to the trombone solo, "There's a Place for Us?"

  • @walkingman717 Often Buddy would play an abridged version of some of his book. Channel One was another example.I recall one night at ronnies he started off with his drum intro into west side & ended up just doing a solo nothing else except the last few bars at the end of the tune!

  • Sorry Mr Rich but do you know how to do anything else with those drums besides fast rolls and snare rudiments? Some beats, rhythm perhaps?

  • @LS7Roc You can't be that stupid and blind?

  • He and Roach were gods!

  • I was only 17 when Buddy passed. I'm a drummer and bass player and I would have given anything to have been a member of his big band, no matter what anyone says about his attitude toward his band members. One thig is for sure, he would have made me a better musician and player. If I could play with Buddy I problaby could play with anyone, that's a fact.

  • why they don't have buddy's picture on a u. s. postage stamp is beyond me. they have max's and dizzy's up there but not buddy's, what an injustus, the postal service should be ashamed, just my opinion

  • @sailin1934

You really souldn't be surprised about anything from the Post Office or really any govt. agency. You really don't need ANY experience to go or get ANY job in the US govt. Just watch the news.

  • There should be a documentary on Buddy and his phenomenal talent. Thanks.

  • The Bobby Orr of drumming

  • @wmjoca Bobby Orr ? don'tr get the connection-------If there is one!

  • @mikebuddy1 , Since you are from Ireland, you may never have heard of Bobby Orr. Bobby Orr was (IMHO) the greatest hockey player that ever lived.

I also think that Buddy Rich was the greatest drummer that ever lived. Therefore, Rich was the Bobby Orr of drumming. You could say Orr was the Buddy Rich of hockey.

  • @wmjoca Ah,iget yea.I thought you were talkin bout Bobby Orr the drummer!

  • @mikebuddy1 one of the greatest ice hockey players of all time

  • @wmjoca

perhaps the 'Babe Ruth' of Drumming...could be a better comparison

  • the best drummer of all the time! for sure!

  • OMG!!! The dreaded matched grip! :D Buddy Rich roxorz!

  • Masterful !!!

  • My friends mother took us to see him back in 84. We were about 16 at the time. We had a close table to the stage. I will never forget it till the day I die. Words can't describe it. I cherish the fact that I saw him play live.

  • @BiblePit Damn, I wish that I had of been born sooner to go and witness my favourite jazz drummer play live!

  • 5:20 his sweat is stinging his eyes. i know the feeling. did my first 20 or so years of playing drums, without thinking of bringing all those "important" items along with to the gig ( Towel, Water, Tape, etc...) Lol! look at his face right at 5:20 he is trying to shake his head so the sweat will fly off his face. man, that stuff burns! Lol! and.....totally distracts you from what your trying to play in the moment. Buddy!~ Grab your towel dude! ha-ha

  • It used to amuse me watching those 'ROCK' drummers with all their 'EXTRAS' ; Spraying water,Fans,Gloves,Sweat bands,Trainers,

spare me, just play the frikin drums dude

  • You know he's good when he can play faster and tighter, while wearing a sportcoat or a sweater.

  • @drumdude46 That shit happens to me ALL the time. I can't do a show without a towel. Worst part is, I sing behind the kit too, so if sweat starts stinging my eyes maintaining concentration is a complete whore to do.

But it adds to theatrics! Haha. You have to close your eyes to stop the burning and then you shake your head profusely to shake it out... lol.

  • I love 7:31 its just so funny!

  • Yep.... "MOVE!!!!"

    Classic!!

  • He did not drop the drum-stick.He held the drumstick with his left hand and played under the bottom of the hi-hat.

  • it does not seem plausible that he dumped a stick and grabbed another one on that sequence at 6:29, but what do I know?

One thing I can say though, if Buddy can use a Speed King so can I...screw DW i'm buying a ludwig.

  • I just got a speed king it is kick ass for $100 bucks

  • If you like your speed king you should try the modernized version of the same mechanism with an Axis Longboard... Obviously they are dissimilar looking but the working concept of the two is the same but the newer uses much much better bearings...

  • @OhYeah729 I LOVE THE SPEED KIND I BOUGHT 38 YEARS AGO BUT EVERYONE THAT WAS EVER MADE SEEMED TO SQUEAK ... MY BROTHER FOUND A BOOTH AT A DRUM SHOW THAT FINE TUNES OLD SPEED KINGS OR BRAND NEW SO THAT THEY ARE PERFECT.

  • There's still something about the way Buddy played rudiments that makes everyone else sound like they're faking it to some extent. Full power with both hands.

  • @Asymmatrix ...he gets that sound because he really holds the sticks firmly, and especially on the left hand he always uses the middle or third finger to get the full sound, watch the single stokes...

  • Spectacular performance....

  • He did not drop drum stick. His stick was held by his left hand and hit botom of hi-hat.

  • shingkang, Thanks for responding. I'm talking about his RIGHT hand. It looks like he throws the drumstick that's in his right hand away and grabs another one. Although it happens really fast. Of course it's fast; it's Buddy Rich we're talking about here! I can't tell. Maybe you're right. Is anybody else seeing this?

  • @ evensteve284 i think what happened is that that he just turned his wrist a little bit to hit the crash cymbal and his hands are moving so fast that the stick appears to disappear going across the screen. i don't even think today;s high definition video recorders would be able to keep up with buddy Rich's hands.....

  • Hey at 6:29, is that a dropped drum stick? Watch Buddy's right hand right above his ride cymbal. Maybe it's just a U-tube video glitch of some sort. I think that you'd have to watch the film version in slow motion to see if he dropped a stick or not. Check it out. He almost looks like he's throwing it away. Maybe he thinks it's about to break?

  • Care to elaborate? Only there are about 10,000 or so recordings that would suggest otherwise.

Or were you just saying that to be "out there" and different?

  • Fabled...??What storied, moral myth would anyone be saying about Lin Biviano???Get your grammar straight first off.The guy could blow...same as you,but in a much different way. What nerve some of you posters have,....Like the attention know it all?Pretty good you say...what an ignorant, critical mention.

  • Wow. Lin B. sounds pretty good, first recording I've heard of him where he perform the to level that he is fabled to be at. I have always leaned towards the hate camp due to sloppy and inappropriate playing on other dates.

  • What a gem. Thanks for posting. Buddy was, and probably is still the best drummer so far.

  • Comment removed

  • such talent man... its so sad how people compare him to travis barker when he can murder travis in a heart beat

  • Amazing!

  • No one else plays with as much timing, dexterity, rythm, creativity, speed, power & technical brilliance as Buddy. In watching all his youtube vids, dozens of times over, there's always another subtle thing I see that's mind blowing. This "West Side Story" is one his very best!!!

  • By FAAAAR the best drummer that ever walked the face of this earth. If Buddy was 125 years old he'd still play like he was in his 20's. We've got some amazing drummers today, many of them, but no one is in the CLASS of this super-man.

  • Carl Palmer used a lot of these licks for his solo in "Tank" off ELP's first album.

  • most people can't perform like they did when they were 20... Buddy Rich can!

  • pwn

  • Great, great drumming. The man.

    Larry, Taiwan

  • watch linbiviano (the trumpet player) at 4:54. hes the one 2nd in from the left. that note he gets out is crazy

  • I did not think Lin was in the band in 82'. Wasn't it more like 71',72'?

  • wow thanks for notifying ....oh my god....

  • this is a great video and a great tune. i love it!! thankx for sharing

RIP Buddy, we all miss you

  • wats that mean?

  • Boy at 7:40 you can really see just how fast he is. He brought this to another level. Wow.

  • he did that same thing in another vid of his...startin from 7:20 on

  • Thanks alot.

I pray to god that i remember i am a drummer next life so i can start as early as Buddy did.

  • yeah no kidding. lol

  • I ,really Wish BUDDY WAS still with us.He gave Drums a new name.....

  • Buddy is awesome!

  • Buddy Rich had some great "wrists" to play the drums like he did.

Thanks for sharing this great clip with all of us.

    Iris

  • na he played mathched lots of times..saw him live a billion times sometimes the entire solo would be matched grip

  • You must be the one that buddy told to play the next set,or Get your feet the hell off my stage,or change your clothes & stop wearing those funny things etc.Only joking,I've seen buddy many times, but not a Billion, and as you say he could play either way depending on the night.

  • lol no just about too young to have been one of those guys, too funny though!

  • Man, Rich never did play like an old man. When guys like Krupa and Roach got older, their playing style reflected their age - slower and looser. But Buddy kept the same fast and furious style throughout his entire career!

  • @WhatAreDrums thank u..those are the words that best describe BR the original FAST & FURIOUS!..just the way he attack the snare

  • sweet editing at 5.45.

  • bloody hell i was 17 when i last saw this - I am now 43. how did that happen?

  • bloody hell i was 17 when i last saw this - I am now 43. how did that happen? -fence

ha ha tops! - exactly my thoughts 15 though I think. I remember the interview with Roy castle Sammy Davis. Great stuff

  • Join the club!

  • @Fencemaster It's a shame I was born in 1991.. However, he remains a main influence, directly, and via other influences who were influenced by him.. so now I'll never use the word influence again.. said it to much already xd Peace Bro!

  • Right on, I would never have believed it but good catch. All the times I've watched him, that would be the first.

  • buddy never played the same solo twice i herd west side and channel one 30 times and every one was played a little different that is what made hime the best

  • buddy never played the same solo twice i herd west side and channel one 30 times and every one was played a little different that is what made hime the best

he did a great version of channel one in San Francisco for US TV in 1985 in the uk it was called Mr Drums fanstastic.

  • I am tellin you have this 1st solo fuckin sussed in my head

I just need to translate it to my hands

  • Tell me about it!

  • A drummer dies and ends up at the pearly gates in front of saint peter, and the drummer hears a slammin drum solo past the gates in heaven, so he says to saint peter "man that sounds like Buddy Rich" and saint peter looks at him and says "no that's god he thinks he's Buddy Rich" .

  • jesus buddy is perfection

  • Ha Ha,the old ones are still the best!

  • I'm a drummer and a pretty good one. I believe that any schooled drummer would agree that Buddy was in a class of his own. He could do with his left hand what everyone else would love to do with both hands. His syncopation of bass pedal and left hand was nothing short of astounding. Many great drummers now and past, including Butch Miles, Louie Bellson, Dick Culley, Joe Ascione, to name a few, but ONLY ONE BUDDY. Thanks for posting this video.

  • well it's a good thing you told us that you're a good drummer, otherwise none of the rest of that comment wouldn't have made any sense

  • Those Ludwigs sound! Love that big bass, deep and rich. Sound almost as good as the 1940 Radio Kings he used from late 83' until 87'. Saw him use these drums twice in 81' and once four months after his by-pass May of 1983.

  • Walt Weiskopf is the tenor soloist. Mighty fine.

  • he sucks though ==

    D

  • wow that one handed roll is burnin at 3:33. Simply amazing.

  • Drummer78 , Thanks for the input but In the late 70's Krupa was out of the ads and Buddy was King as he should have been in one ad BR said"There engineered for today's sound and todays technology." "There's no choking to hem me in and the response is great" :)

  • This is true. Rich reverted back to Slingerlands after Krupa's death.

  • I am not an administrator but please can we all try to make our comments relevant to the video and please stop these childish snipes at each other,I put up these videos to enjoy and hopefully learn from,If some can not be constructive in their comments then just move on.Thanks mikebuddy1

  • hey you're the retard that said it not me, once again let me state that you'll never play as good as buddy

  • Gosh, I hope I can play like that when I'm 65. Wait, I can't play like that now. ;)

  • you won't be able to play like that when your 65 either

  • No shit. Really?

Gosh, you're a real Nostradamus. Can you pull any more "crystal ball" premonitions out of your ass?

Nobody, before or after Buddy can play like Buddy.

  • Speedoflite1 have you ever owned a set of Slingerlands. If not read mel Torme's book "Traps the Wonder Drummer"I believe Buddy liked them the best. It was "the perfect" snare drum he was always in search of.(I've been playin' Slingerlands since 1968 and I still suck). So there! LOL

  • Buddy was never completely satisfied with any of his drums. He was pissed that Slingerland would always keep Krupa as their main ad man and thus switched to Ludwig when William Ludwig Jr. (who Rich didn't like) gave Rich a lucrative endorsement. That arrangement fell apart eventually. Rich used Fibes and Rodgers at one point. He came back to Slingerland but had a falling out with the owner went back to Ludwig for a short time and finally he ended up with Slingerland.

  • agreed, he said it on one of the Johnny Carson videos how there is no "perfect drum" or company he likes. And Traps the Drum Wonder is a great book. all drummers should read that book.

  • i wish i could do the 'drum rolls across drums' thing he does. although i dont think it fits in slw jazz xD

  • Wood beater for the kick tom, and those funky platform boots. Dunno how he played with them.

  • i have (high end audio), and this Lugwig set sounds better than the card board sounding Slingerlands. ...especially, the bass.

    anyone here agree/disagree?

  • slingerlands are definitely an acquired taste, you either love em or hate em

I prefer them to luddys, but that's just my opinion

  • my goodness!! i saw another older version of that piece but this one was better by far... fantastic, simply!

  • THAT IS DRUMMING AT IT'S BEST...the rest of the band was smokin' too!

  • Walt Weiskopf with hair!

  • at the top of his game

  • Buddy Rich the Best Drummer in the World.

  • what the hell happens at 3.30??? I can only see the snare and assume the rest is the BD

  • snare + BD + a bit of tom tom (mounted one).

  • If you are talking about what happens right around where BR does the cymbal grab, he's double stroking off the floor tom and the base drum; it sounds like a funky double stroke roll. Waaay cool.

  • i once saw a video of liberty devito (billy joels drummer), he had "give blood" painted in red on his floor tom. thats what buddy did every time. has anyone seen the video on youtube where buddy actually has a heart attack during a solo and keeps going till the end?

  • no, is it available?

  • yeah, just youtube search "cathy rich talks about buddy's heart attack" bloody amazing!

  • Buddy must have forgotten to put his Toupee on. He looks a little thin on top.

  • Save the cheap remarks for shitty drummers, pal.

  • It was just a joke Asshole I happen to love Buddy Rich.

  • I watched this as a kid on Parky -completely blew my mind. Buddy was and is the best there ever was.

  • oh my god...

  • Thanks for this. Another great new video of Buddy kicking ass! What an incredible drum solo with a few new licks thrown in too. You can see that he pushed himself that little bit harder here, he can hardly stand at the end credits.

  • hey mikeBuddy, if i get it to work do you mind a half speed post? if you do let me know.

  • Thanks, MikeBuddy......we also have been waiting 26 years for this video!

  • Is that Lin Biviano, Chris Pasin, Mike Davis, Rick Stepton, Andy Fusco, and Steve Marcus back there (don't know the rest)?

  • I'm looking at the 1982 UK Tour Official Programme right now & it says:Steve Marcus,Andy Frusco,Dave D'Angelo,Walter Weiskopf,Keith Bishop=Saxs,

    Lyn Biviano,John Harbaugh,Chris Passin,Nick Thorpe=Tpts.

    Rick Stepton,Conrad Herwig lll,Peter Beltran=tmbs.

    Lee Musiker=Pno

    Mike Boone=Bass

    Don't think C.Herwig lll here?

  • Oh, it's probably Conrad. He and Mike D. are both very tall trombone players, and the video is not particularly clear.

  • Ive seen many of Buddys performances and this is definatly one of the best ive ever seen,...so far!LOL!

  • YEAAAAH! chops smooth as butter, swingin' like a an oiled gate, man after all of these years NO one even comes close.

glad I got to see it live and thanks to video's like these some of the younger guys can see it for themselves

killer post, you came through again!

  • I've been waiting for this for 26 years. I wasn't allowed to watch it in 1982 as it was on at 11pm or something like that, so my Dad did an off air audio recording for me.

This was on Buddy's U.K. tour in '82, I saw him live at the Gaumont in Ipswich in March of that year. Wish I wasn't too young to remember that night!

Thanks so much for posting this mikebuddy1!

  • One of a kind . The Best . Super post !

  • I can't believe that cameraman got up so close to Buddy.

And at 7:52 the speed of his singles hitting the crash....I have yet to see anyone do that.

  • The whole performance blows me away -- the song, the solo. From a technical standpoint, those one handed eighth note triplets or sixteenth notes (hard to tell at this fidelity) he plays at 5:58 and 6:12 totally knock me out. Absolutely incredible. And that's just the tip of the solo's iceburg.

  • Awesome!
