Hm, that's an odd view of the Britpop bands. That they were sticking to their particular style in order to wave the british flag and being afraid of the immigrants taking over. I've never seen any britpop band in that light, bands like Oasis, Suede, Blur, and the newcomers. It's just a line of tradition, like for example country music, heavy metal, electro... They are not necessary bringing that much new to the music scene but it's really hard for me to see it as a sign of "flag waving".
for me the whole Britpop scence and Oasis scene, the whole guitar scence, is gonna scare British scence and Britishness. And immigrance is taking over than that. English people like Britpop scence, they just seem repeating,
and trying to (?) how old a Victorian flag like. But it is just like, you know, dead, you know. And I don't see 'em to be doing anything fertile. #fine.
on similar missions to me, if I don't talk to them regularly, and I don't see them play regularly, I just go mad. In Iceland I was very much the one out the scene, I just need[s] to know that I am not the only one. And the people there ended up in my band without me planning it. So we are like one person from Iran, one from India, one from Turkey, one from Syprus, one from Barbados, these immigrants are isolated like I did (?), #3
The people are mostly attracted to, and the scene that was mostly attracted to, when I came here was people who knew as little as I did about what was gonna happen. Not people (and?) already established things,
but people there were still trying to sort of entering unknown (if you want?), trying to discover something that hadn't been discovered before. London is gorgeous because it functions as a brewing pot, for people from all over the planet. #2
I moved to London to make my own album. It was time for me then to write songs about me. I was 27. I thought okay, you know, you are a coward if you don't try more things. It was a very big decision to move, mostly because of my songs and I am a really family oriented person. When I came to London I was very looking (?), and I was very sure that I wasn't gonna do... I was gonna do an album that I hadn't done before. So, uhm, [when I ...] #1
Comes to London for herself and to enjoy multi-cultural influences then slags off the locals?
Our musical culture far out strips icelandic musical perceptions and ideas. Britpop is commercial tripe. UK musicians don't fly a victorian flag and the majority don't play britpop either. Go back to your broken radio set sweet heart.
I like Bjork but her comments about Britpop seem weird and insulting.
I mean, would she go to all these other countries like Japan, India, Cyprus, Barbados and tell the people there that their music scene is dead and pathetic?
She wouldnt because she fetishizes and exploits their musical traditions. But theres nothing left for her to steal from Britain - her whole style is heavily influenced by British rock music - so she turns around and insults the tradition that created her. Shes arrogant.
Bjork's great but i don't agree with her here, she is hyper-inventive and that's fantastic we need more artists like her, but britpop (hate the word but for wan't of a better umbrella term) described a facet of British culture that is still relevant and alive, and many bands now are still doing this, it need's dusting off and updating, the queen victoria pride was always ironic anyway right back to The Kinks.
That's why she came to Britain. Because Britain hold some flags and it's dead. Britain isn't dead and people come to countries like Britain, because somewhere deep they've got a identity. You can play all the music around them, they even admire you. You can stick your flag into Britain. When it comes down to... all the immigrants are gone and Britain and the British people are still there. Very sad.
I'm in the UK but I have to agree with her on the britpop movement. All these british bands desperately trying to say british because the UK public are afraid of losing their identity via trying anything new. The truth is multiculturalism should be encouraged and its foolish to cling on to what you already know forever out of fear.
@SirDragonFruit It should arise naturally, forced multiculturalism causes animosity and division...just like globalization should arise naturally but its being controlled by those who want power.
i can't believe this Girl it's 42 years old at the time of this video footage other non-smoking girls that age look a bit older, either genes or the environment has so much to do with how you'd age .
Lol why is everyone associating music with different countries? It's not like America put out Miley Cyrus' records. They're just people that happen to live in a certain place.
Searched for an interview with Bjork after watching Dancer in the Dark as I thought she was great in that, but still I have to disagree over British rock scene being dead. I'd say these days Britain is making much better music than the majority of stuff thats hitting the charts from America. Its much more willing to try something different as well. All those samey R&B tracks, they drive me mad : / Look at Mumford and Sons for example; great, new and british
but I agree. pop and R&B its like the same cd is stuck on repeat. very sad. As an Icelander she absolutely did speak English. (The average Icelander is fluent in 5 languages.) She had a thick Icelandic accent, which is missed, but like any of us, when we move our accent is transfigured by our new surroundings. Like it or not.
@digthejighibernia What? you are Icelandic and you are wasting your time on the internet? you have an account on Youtube, the worst and the most evilous website ever created? can't you be as pure as I imagine the landscapes to be? there must be so much to live in Iceland!
