Superreverbking, just had to write to compliment you on your cover of this tune, one of my favorite Bakersfield country classics. I need to buy a bender guitar, but when I get it, I'd need to start trying to cop those nice steel licks. Any tips or pointers? What voicings are you using in the "steel guitar" parts that correspond to Mooney's solo? Many thanks again for posting this; you sound great. Where do you perform?
@GeorgiaBoy1961 Thanks - I really can't play the bender well (haven't really picked it up since around the time this vid was made. Steel parts are just major and minor triads over each chord. I play out in the clubs and halls of Long Island, NY, rarely playing this type of music, unfortunately.
Outstanding man!! A friend turned me on to this because he said it sounded like my ol man.. he has been gone 21 years. He was right, great memories...thanks
Terrific...Your B-bender improvisation is right in keeping with the spirit of the original tune...sometimes the simplest things are the best...I'm going to get my B-Bender out and learn this too, I've always loved the original. Roger M (62 this year!).
Wow you are incredible. Love the sound of your guitar. If you live around Pittsburgh my band would love to jam with you kemme know. Were looking for a good country guitarist.
I have a Y2K Nashville teecaster and I just put the B bender, G bender and drop D tail piece on it that I got for Christmas. After 46 years of playing straight guitar, I've entered into a new realm of country guitar. I love it.
that's for sure, the magic of this run is that mix of open G notes and closed hammer-on and pull-offs notes, in that bars, I'd say, which is so typical for Burton's playing though.
Wish you had this on tab, but I'll work on it closely. Anyway, it's great to know, that there is another guy on this planet picking this piece spot-on right!
Thanks for replying re: Weber 12". It was a pleasant surprise to watch your vid 'Cornpicking', as I've figured that tune out also from the (one of my all-time essential listening) LP 'Cornpicking &Slicksliding', long time ago.
However, there's one lick, that I still haven't solid in my fingers, i.e: in the basic theme, after that little bend in G, hammer-on + open G-string. So, I'd really appreciate if you'd show what you're playing there, as it sounds so 100% close what you play. Thanks a lot!
there's so many good ones now, it's hard to say. truthfully, i would look for an old one from the 70's, used. they are spotty quality-wise, but they do that twang pretty well. modern teles are more "polite"
i had a '53 at one point that was great, and a '71 that was one of the best guitars i've owned.
I reviewing the master track, I realize I added a bit of compression on the mixdown. The guitar was, therefore, compressed a bit. That's the only effect though. The basic tone is just a decent Tele through a nice Fender amp. The reverb is the Deluxe's on "4.5"

Hi there, good playing! Can you recommend any CDs featuring B bender-like riffs, so I can improve my own playing? Cheers, Baz.

I think you mean the part where I alternate pick between an open G and an F note on the fourth string, third fret.
superreverbking 2 years ago
Yeah, exactly SR-king! ...how to explain or demonstrate that part?
bartobar 2 years ago
i think they're just 8th notes. G, F, G,G
