Reason why I say Charles wasn't really being fair, is because when Mary and Adam married, she was 16, and Adam didn't even ask for Charles' permission. And don't say because she went blind and that's different. Remember, she was once engaged to John, she wasn't blind then, and Charles didn't say anything. I guess either way, its different because Mary was the oldest girl. But still it wasn't fair trying to make Laura wait for 2 years. Not even one year. But can't press your luck lol
This reminds me of a friend of mine whose father gave his mother an ultimatum: Him (the father) or the cat. She chose the cat. Giving someone an ultimatum only makes them angry. You're only hurting yourself if you make someone choose. Go Laura! Be strong!
she does look so young sometimes it feels weird to look at them... depends of the way he does her hair and the lengh of her skirt as well i always feel that when it's longer she looks older same with mary
If Almanzo really loved Laura he would wait for her instead of making her choose between her man and her pa. Waiting would be best for them to proove that their love will last, I read a book where the girl was engaged and her husband was at school to be a doctor so she taught school for 3 or 4 years but they loved eachother even more waiting and that's what Laura and Almanzo need to do.
@Xeffyxef Yes exactly!!They cannot stand to be rejected. They are selfish and proud sometimes, very proud just like Almanzo. They are intolerant and unfair. And almanzo is just this way here in this episode.Quite unbearable!A little whimmy kid.
I think it was unfair for zalmando to force laura into a choice. But from Zalmando's persepctive, Laura's got to make up her mind what she wants in life and waiting 2 years may not be what's in his plans.
@monkeydashley True. But at the same time, Almanzo did have a point, it really was Laura's choice, not Pa's. Charles was being quite unfair. 16 was the age when a young lady wanted to get married back then. Charles wasn't ready to let go. But by the end, he realized he had to. He didn't really have a favorite, but he had that special father/daughter relationship with Laura because before Almanzo, Charles was the most important man in her life. And that was about to change.
Almonzo wasn't making it easy on her, pulling @ her heart strings. He obviously just wants it his way, rushing right into it because of his feelings & not considering anyone else's feelings in the scenario.
Almanzo is mean, calling her a little girl. She should have said "well then that makes you a pedophile" punched him on the nose and walked off. Okay, she shouldn't have done that but I would have been tempted in that situation.
manly's trouser snake was doing the talking in this one... then when he can't get what he wants/is hurt by refusal, he turns to insult. Who is the most mature one must ask?
as for adam's situation - gosh does nobody get a good break?
And at Nellies', did you see the size of the steak??
Almonzo is being a jerk, but I understand where he's coming from. This was a time when you couldn't just have sex without marriage unless you paid for a saloon girl in the city. In Laura's case , her father is not right or wrong, but it is wrong for them to get married without the parents agreeing. It never works.
how messed up of almanzo to make laura choose between him and her father I mean really if a man made me choose I would choose my flesh & blood over him any day! men come & go but family is forever
You know it has always been my observation that women who are especially eccentric usually have husbands who are especially levelheaded and saintlike. :) I;ve seen it in real life and here it is with Nels and Harriet. God obviously knows what he's doing.
I wouldn't marry a guy who treated me that way. "Your Pa was right, you're still a little girl." I actually think she was rather adult like in that situation. Almonzo was the childish person.
In this episode, it seems like he's in such a hurry to marry because of one thing! You can guess what that is. His true love comes out eventually. He is being a selfish jerk to this point, I would certainly wait and I'm extremely impatient.
Go to justfrieda44's channel to see the missing scene that comes after this clip along with many others that were cut from tv and the u.s dvd version.
Probably not but it depends on the state and it's laws. I am in medicine and don't know a lot about the law. I always dated girls my own age, or maybe a couple years younger. I was more or less making a point about how much things have changed since 1885.
@mustwinder Actually, in real life, Almanzo and Laura were only 5 or 6 years apart. Almanzo had lied about his age when buying his claim. So when the Land Agent asked for his age Almanzo replied "You can put me down as 21," But he was actually only 19. But I think only a few people knew about it. His family and Laura knew, and Laura's family might have known also.
Laura was very respectful to her Pa when she declined Almonzo's invitiation. He should have respected her Pa more. I don't know if this is how it happened in the books, but I respect Laura for standing up to Almonzo and listening to her Pa even though she didn't want to.
No, it didn't happen this way in real life. Almonzo was respectful & strong, & a wonderful young man that Pa looked up to. The courtship & engagement wasn't as rediculous as this either - writing down what he had to say, etc.
Almonzo had backbone & respect. He came to Pa ALONE, first to ask for her hand - then asked Laura. If you read about it, it's quite a lovely story.....
Talk about peer pressure. I'm sorry but it's wrong of Almanzo to pressure Laura that way. I sure hope by the end of the 2 part episode he shows a little more respect.
There's no confusion over the fact that Adam's father did actually see his grandson once before he died, because the fire that killed the baby had occured a few months ago...can't you see they're all rebuilding the Harriet Olson Institute?? Later on the show, Mary and Adam will take over the law firm in New-York. (Hope my English sounds well, I'm French!!!)
I think it's because Mary was already more adult at this age. Also she had a little experience in that area... I don't think it was easier for Charles to let Mary go than Laura. He loved them both the same way.
Right, the only time she lived away from any of her family was went she went to the blind school. After that, she lived with her sisters until she died in her 60's
okey well i know the 1800 early 1900 they wore same dress many years, but couldnt they give laura one more dress after all, they didnt follow the books complelty and its just a "ttv show" different days,in serie 24,its the same day they have to wear same clothes for a whole season
@Emotional2000 Almanzo say "NO IF"S NO BUTS NO WAITING - an ultimatum, then he says 2 laura it;s HER choice - So which is it? Can't he get it thru his thick skull she;s OLY 16!!! They have yrs 2 b together
@candlelight482 The fact of the matter is that Almanzo's not given Laura much of a choice. In his world, at the moment, its either his way or the highway... Almanzo made the ultimatum out of fear of losing Laura and pure selfishness. That's just my 2 cents.
Also, must know that back then people didn't have premarital sex like they do today. It was condsidered to be something shameful. I guess they knew in there hearts that couldnt be an option for them. They just wanted to be married to make it okay. They also really loved each other, and when you know, you know. (sometimes).
Laura seems more mature than her Almanzo. And she's still very young. But I think that he wants to be more near to Luara all the time, than just the sex issue. If they are not married then she still lives with her mother and father. And if you love someone, you want to be with them more than a couple of nights a week.
I think I also thought that because the way the episodes are it seemed like they dated for, like, two months and since they couldn't really be physical normally at that point people are really into that so... you know... "Let's get married!!!" Ha ha ha!
I don't that's odd to say at all... i'm sure the thought may have crossed Almanzo's mind in this particular epi.. I couldn't understand the reason why he wanted to rush things either... You make a valid point regarding the sex issue.. But I think Almanzo was being selfish and stubborn overall. Also, people really didn't live that long during their time too... Maybe Almanzo thought it best to get married sooner than later b/c of this fact as well as his age. He was a lot older than Laura.
Here some I don´t understand?? Charles said that Adams father died. But when Mary is expecting her first child, Adams father comes to viset. (I hope you can understand this, english is not my first language
Your English is better than most people who speak it as their native language! Little House often had it's glitches and this was probably one of them. It never really affected the quality of the show though. IHMO
I love the episode where we find out Percival's Jewish, and it's like a whole 'Meet the Parents: Walnut Grove Edition" thing, and both sets of parents argue about religion, and both Nellie and Perce are like 'Oy vey!'
i feel sorry for Laura and i agree with laura completly i would not go with almanzo if i had to choose between my Boyfriend or my father it would be my father for sure
Okay, again. Almanzo is HOT. But he fights dirty. "You're still a little girl." Pressing Laura's buttons--great way to get her to marry you, dude. Ironically, saying that makes him look like a little boy.
No offense but Pa was very hypocritical. In one of the earlier episodes, Pa told John (the oldest boy that Mr. Edwards and Grace adopted) that he could marry Mary when she was 14 or 15 but she won't let Laura get married at 16?? Come on!! Talk about a double standard.
GAAHH Manly, you are too infuriating! Can't ya see she wants to wait a while? It's her choice too!

IHMO

ALmanzo's ultimatum is completely unfair.

how long were they courting before he proposed? it was only one episode.

Almanzo is cutting deep. Laura always wanted to be seen as a woman, and this probably hurt her alot. And he sais he loves her, phh!

I love the episode where we find out Percival's Jewish, and it's like a whole 'Meet the Parents: Walnut Grove Edition" thing, and both sets of parents argue about religion, and both Nellie and Perce are like 'Oy vey!'

Almanzo just wants sex!!!!!!

I felt the same way to when he was pressuring Laura to choose b/w him and her Pa. lol :)
Emotional2000 4 years ago
Almonzo is being immature but if you love somebody you should just marry them not wait for 2 years. Charles should have just approved.

Almanzo was just being just so plain unreasonable and stubborn!

I feel soo sorry for Laura.

Okay, again. Almanzo is HOT. But he fights dirty. "You're still a little girl." Pressing Laura's buttons--great way to get her to marry you, dude. Ironically, saying that makes him look like a little boy.

dang this makes me hate almanzo, but i didnt for long
vball14chick 4 years ago
No offense but Pa was very hypocritical. In one of the earlier episodes, Pa told John (the oldest boy that Mr. Edwards and Grace adopted) that he could marry Mary when she was 14 or 15 but she won't let Laura get married at 16?? Come on!! Talk about a double standard.
