Reason why I say Charles wasn't really being fair, is because when Mary and Adam married, she was 16, and Adam didn't even ask for Charles' permission. Waiting would be best for them to proove that their love will last, I read a book where the girl was engaged and her husband was at school to be a doctor so she taught school for 3 or 4 years but they loved eachother even more waiting and that's what Laura and Almanzo need to do.

He didn't really have a favorite, but he had that special father/daughter relationship with Laura because before Almanzo, Charles was the most important man in her life. And that was about to change.

Almonzo is being a jerk, but I understand where he's coming from. This was a time when you couldn't just have sex without marriage unless you paid for a saloon girl in the city. In Laura's case , her father is not right or wrong, but it is wrong for them to get married without the parents agreeing. It never works.

So when the Land Agent asked for his age Almanzo replied "You can put me down as 21," But he was actually only 19. But I think only a few people knew about it. His family and Laura knew, and Laura's family might have known also.

Laura was very respectful to her Pa when she declined Almonzo's invitiation. He should have respected her Pa more. I don't know if this is how it happened in the books, but I respect Laura for standing up to Almonzo and listening to her Pa even though she didn't want to.

No, it didn't happen this way in real life. Almonzo was respectful & strong, & a wonderful young man that Pa looked up to. The courtship & engagement wasn't as rediculous as this either - writing down what he had to say, etc.

Almonzo had backbone & respect. He came to Pa ALONE, first to ask for her hand - then asked Laura. If you read about it, it's quite a lovely story.....
