This lacks the thoughts of any discipline.Meaning that the stated amount of oil there would not make a 1% dent ,but by locking it up now the developer pays at todays rate and the rate is on a steady upscale. So 10 years from now the Alaskan social network pays out and the US taxpayer pays in on something that it got less for money wise. It is simply a business decision. The real oil is deep off the coast it just cost more to bring it up.
if yuo are having to go get oil in a place where there is nothging but ice and mosquitoes, and no one else lives, then it is very likely that we do not have 60 years worth of oil left. Additinally what ever oil is up there will be so expensive to develop that it will have an untenably low return on investment benefit, just like prudoe bay does.
it makes more sense to leave that resource for future generations and switch to something else.
New Bumper Stickers comin' soon....."IF YOU VOTED FOR OBAMA IN 2008 TO PROVE YOU'RE NOT A RACIST, THEN YOU MUST VOTE FOR SOMEONE ELSE IN 2012 TO PROVE YOU'RE NOT AN IDIOT."....Nver vote democrat - the party has been hijacked by wacko, marxist, socialist, communist, idiots....most dems fit into one or more of these catagories, obama and mama obama fit in ALL of them.
Since Obama has been in office, gas is up 87% ($1.34/gallon in Feb. 2009 to the national average of $3.58 today). Last week in Ca , I paid $4.19 it will be over $5.00 by Christmas... it will not go down.
Remember, Obama said his plan would cause energy prices to “skyrocket.” This is one promise he has kept.
There are just too many retarded people in America to ever do sane things like drill for oil in a God forbidden frozen tundra. China's drilling for oil 50 miles off the Florida coast, and we can't. That makes sense only to a mentally handicapped idiot. (Liberal)
I only have one problem with this presentation.. the only purpose that is noted for oil is that we use it for fuel, but there are so many other applications for the NATURALLY occuring resource. asphault roads, surgical gloves, tires, product packaging, and shipping of goods depends on it. with out it global economy will deminish.
Proponents of drilling here aren't the least bit interested in energy independence, otherwise they'd be open to other energy options. They want oil and oil ONLY so that their criminal masters can get rich.
This video keeps on trying to stress what a worthless barren pit it is. Look at what happened in the gulf. drilling is so harmless and zero impact, SURE
All they need to do is get their foot in the door and the tiny pinpoint will become half the state. Oil drilling is a disease that spreads
i hope to god you were being sarcastic when you said 60 years is a very long time, in the grand scheme of things 60 years is nothing if you need to overhaul the whole of the USA's energy infrastucture so that you are still energy secure when the oil runs out.
The white man screws up everything he touches. It is not a waist land but it will be if there is drilling. It's very ethnocentric to call it that. I have been there 3 months on the coastal plain. You can show pictures of wildlife near industry and say see! there liars thats a slanted way to present that.. Its chemical spills oil spills roads damage to the land Oh sorry "waistland" its toxicity that is more of an issue then whether some caribou decide to camp around some structures.. Look deeper
If energy independence is the goal, why does the U.S. cut deals to ship North Slope crude to Asia? Because sometimes it's more profitable to sell OUR oil overseas than to sell it at home. Drilling in ANWR will not cut our dependence on foreign oil. The actual amount that can be *cost-effectively* recovered from it is 6 months - 1 year. Exxon just wants to use their Prudhoe Bay infrastructure for the last 5% of the coastal plain that hasn't already been opened for drilling & seismic exploration.
ANWR drilling would BARELY effect oil prices. Every independent analysis comes to that conclusion. the GOP's insistence on it is ridiculous. Their wrecklessness with the environment has gone on long enough.
increased domestic drilling would decrease imports.
decreasing our dependency on foreign nations would save billions in military expenditures and would lessen the prospect of us having to enter future wars.
we're sitting on a goldmine and eventually we're going to need the reserves, why not start drilling now?
think for the future:
although production won't reach peak until 2030, starting drilling in five years would mean that it won't reach peak until 2035.
(cont5) before the next major oil crisis, we will be in a position to develop our own oil reserves rapidly (since we scouted them out) and buy ourselves some more time to develop alternative technologies.
This is not a left/right issue. It is a smart/dumb issue.
The smart person prepares for contingencies and plays to win. That means attacking this problem from multiple points of view.
(cont4) At the same time we should be building nuclear power plants, increasing the CAFE standards radically, exploring renewable fuels (biodiesel, cellulosic EtOH, etc) and building windmills, tidal generation rigs, etc.
IF we manage to invent/develop alternative energy that is more economic than oil BEFORE the next oil crisis, then more power to us. We will be the world leaders in that tech & be selling to the rest of the world.
(cont3) The gasoline prices of this summer is a glimpse of that future. The day IS coming when gasoline will be $20/gal. Then $30...
So what do we do? The SMART thing to do is to preserve our reserves at this time while other countries deplete their resources WHILE locating every drop of oil we can find in NAM (North America).
That means we should be exploring on every coast, every swamp using non-destructive methods (seismic imaging, magnetic, etc) so we know where the oil is (cont4)
They used seismic imaging in at the Norwegian coast last spring, and the fish was frightend away all the summer damaging the fishingindustry. The fish can't handle the shockwaves from seismic "shooting"
(cont2) Also, there IS a limited but vast supply of oil in the world. One of the projects we did at Schlumberger was "when will we run out of oil?"
The fact is it is unlikely we will. What will happen is oil will become more and more expensive until it is no longer economic to use it as a power source.
We are virtually out of $10/bbl oil. But at $200/bbl, we have decades and decades. If you want to play $1,000,000/bbl, then probably centuries (cont3)
(cont1) I have visited the prudhoe bay drilling sites in winter and summer (did internships with Schlumberger when I was considering geophysics major). Modern drilling is nothing like what is pictured by those opposing it.
There is an almost surgical cleanliness to the sites & with directional drilling the distance between well heads is vast (it is NOTHING like the forest of drilling rigs people like to show), and the wildlife is hindered not at all. (cont2)
The spike in prices was due to a supply and demand squeeze. Demand increased more quickly than supply. Economics 101, prices up. As the PPB (price per barrell) skyrocketed, the incentive to produce oil increased and to use it decreased proportionally.
The impact of that supply crisis is still filtering though the economy (dumb lending practices don't help either).
This video is correct in some respects, and incorrect in others (cont1)
sarah plain says SHE is the reason for the gas pipe line. What pip line. they6 have not even broke ground on any gas pip line, and are not sure it will ever happen. Its another plain line, just like here line, I cut the pay for the mayor by $4000. But she did not tell people she hired a city mgr to run the town @$50,000 a year. savings not this time, total=$110,000. just like the 20 million in the hole she put the town in.
If your going to create a video like this, don't claim that it's unbiased. One of several important points that you decided to omit: 7,000+ Gwich'in Indians and Inupiaq Natives rely entirely on the caribou for their physical and cultural survival. The "1002" area where they want to drill is exactly where the caribou herd breeds and raises their young. Nearly all biologists agree that drilling will negatively impact the herd, therefore destroying the Gwich'in culture. It's a human rights issue
..and before you try to give the usual oil company-funded study statistic that claims the Prudoe Bay caribou population has increased since oil development began...the natives I lived with in Arctic Village and Anaktuvuk Pass, AK say the caribou they hunt from Prudoe Bay are too sickly and diseased to even eat. Go to Alaska, meet the people, and make up your mind instead of watching a misinformed video created by proponents of the oil companies--because they are the only ones that will get rich.
If I was president I would marry Sarah Palin, and she could help me run my big triple drilling rig by shooting at those pesky caribous that keep migrating across my pad, and also keep the arctic chill out of my shack lol
I totally agree with ibphotos. Talking like 60 years is a long time is a joke. People who don't care about the future want oil now. We waste so much energy now it is pitiful. We need to mandate higher efficiency and switch to renewable sources as much as possible and not burn up all the oil now sitting at the drive-thru at your local McDonalds.
OK, this is not un-biased. Having said that, 60 years is not a VERY LONG TIME> Demand will most likely have reached or outpaced whatever supply drilling may provide, by the time that oil hits the pumps. Look how fast the NOrth Slope oil peaked and fell behind. DO a little more research on the supply/demand numbers.
Drilling should be done now to help bridge the gap between oil dependance and alternative energies. BUt don't even imagine it will give you a price break now, or ever.
Too bad it isn't usable oil. the reserve stretches from ANWR to several miles off the west coast. the north shore oil fields have this reserve tapped and pumping as wee speak. The problem is that the oil is an intermediate sour crude. It containing more than twice the sulfur of Sweet crude and more than four times that of West Texas Light crude both of which are the grades used for motor fuel.
Alaskans do want more royalties now rather than later so they have a pit-bull w/lipstick pushing
60 Yrs is not a long time. If prices come down won't consumption go back up? If consumption goes up won't the projected 60-200yrs come down? I'm all for drilling in ANWR if congress passes legislation stating that all oil drilled in the US stays in the US. That's the only we're going to see a reduction in foreign otherwise it's just going overseas... ANWR offshore drilling this is all side issues meant to divide people... We really need a revision of energy policy.. not more hype.
drilling may not cause the problems some say it would, but it definitely will not help us like you say. According to bush's white house, in 10 years total output COULD reach about 750,000 barrels per day in a country that consumes 19 million barrels per day. So stop spreading your pathetic lies f@cks like you are destroying my country and my planet

It's so easy to say Wind, Solar, Electric, Ethanol, and Biofuels... but until any or all of them are at a level to provide the nation's FULL power and energy needs, we're still stuck with oil... so let's get the price DOWN ASAP while we still HAVE an economy!

So what you're saying is that you either don't know or won't talk about the numbers.
Who's to blame for high oil, dems vs repubs, wildlife; these are all sideshow issues.
The only relevant point in this discussion: How much oil is there? And how much (and how soon) will drilling reduce gas prices?
How do you expect a person to make a logic-based decision about this without that info?
I don't oppose drilling; I do oppose the pandering that suggests it will significantly lower gas prices.
