The 4screen part of this scene is one of the most creative collective ideas in music and camera work. Roy and the cameraman realized a big idea -- in an analog age!
Steve Howe (of Yes fame) was a fan of Roy Smeck. Having watched a few Smeck videos for the first time, it's apparent that Smeck influenced Howe to play various stringed instruments and tap on his acoustic like a drummer. Most interestingly, Howe did a video in the 70's of an original ragtime piece called "Ram" in which "4" Howes play various stringed instruments, just like in the Smeck video.

Guessing from the early lap steel and amp... plus the non electrified orchestra, 1929-1932. The split screen one was from 1933.
