I used to think only Glenn Gould can play Bach; other pianists would distort his music or something's missing somehow, but this piece changed my mind. This is perfect Bach piano in every sense.
J' annule! Ecouté ds de mauvaises conditions ss doute!!!! cela m' étonnait et me décevait tellement!!!!! Mea culpa! Bravo Alicia de Larrocha!!! Merci pour cette vidéo!
Disagree with all of you very critical "music pundits"....This is beautiful Bach piano performance played perfectly and unless any of you can do better, or give me a link to a better performance of this Suite, I don't see you in position to critique this pianist. I love how every "listener" has to post on here as if they're a "judge" as they offer their 2 cents about what's wrong with incredibly Great performances. Gimme a break. Swallow your pride, sit back and enjoy the Bach for Pete's sake
@crob647gtx I agree that the piece is beautiful, but critiquing music and performing music are two very different professions and doing one does not imply or require skill in the other and they should not be compared, no more than if the pianist were to make critical comments about the piano manufacturer.

another romantic point of view....there are millions of this shit in youtube...
it´s just my opinion asshole...of course she was an wonderful interpreter of albeniz, padre soler, y granados...but this rendering of french suite nr 6 is just too much conventional as all others.
@harpsinth This is GREAT Bach, there is nothing conventional about it,... counterpoint, sound, eveness is just perfect,... she was one of the ALL TIME great Bach players,... her performances are full of life and beauty,... far better in EVERY respect that other "famous" Bach players, i.e. Glen Gould.
counterpoint where ? Except for the finale giga, the rest of the suite don´t employ such devices.
For me this E major suite don´t match very well with piano typical "hammering" and sound.
D and C minor Suites works far better. And what I mean by "conventional" is a constant and steady - mechanical treatment of Bach´s music - so common in pianist´s. (just my point of view). Try listen to this: /watch?v=woh8UHdjl1M - and please let me know yours :)
@arturon111 ; Disagree with you. ALL Bach's compositions have counterpoint, 4 part writing even his 2 part inventions. You have to learn to distinguish the soprano, alto, tenor and bass in linear writing, but can assure you they are there, this is a device both mozart and chopin learnt from bach later on. As far as Hammer sound of the piano, it is again WRONG, the piano was and is a singing instrument, and deLarrocha was one of the greatest pianists with the most beautifull singing sound.
When you hear glenn gould and then Alicia de Larrocha for me there is no doubt she is right and much more close to Bach than glenn gould or anybody else. Richter and Goulda failed mostly too. Alicia de Larrocha did know and feel the sense of music. Instinctively she finds the connection to the composition. Its never fabricated. She just makes divine music.
What a great pianist she was, yet in many ways not recognized enough. I love Martha Argerich but when I hear Alicia play the Schumann Concerto I hear so many harmonies and other intricacies that Martha's high speed rendition does not reveal. I think Juan Carlos called her un tesoro nacional.
Simply wonderful, and thank you, Alicia, for you have given so much for the short time in which you have been with us, and thanks to you bcnjd for posting this....
The last time I listened to this, I didn't like some of it. I like it better now, because I realize that there are more important things than interpretive accuracy. De Larrocha brings expression and heart to every movement except the Sarabande, which is awkward and a bit dull. However, the Gigue is fascinating, because she manages to make it so dance-like - she's great at making the movement bounce.
We seldom have the opportunity to get this close to creation. Through Bach and this woman's playing we are there, A glympse into how it all began and how it continues.
Since last year i didn't know this bigger pianist. She's (respect me) one of the biggest in the history of the piano music toghether Martha Agerich, my idol! Thanks Alice for these wonderful perfomance! we love you!
@andreamarchis I heard Alicia play in concerto and recital many times in NYC. She was truly awesome. I, too, am a die hard Argerich fan but Alicia does other things with Martha's repertoire............ the Schumann, for example.......... it is gorgeous and so different from Marthas but they both work.................
I heard her four times in person...always colorful, brilliant, stylish, expressive as the music called for in a wide-ranging repertoire from Couperin and Bach, up through Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Ravel, and the magnificent Spanish repertoire for which she was so justifiably famous. She will live on in our hearts and in all the many wonderful recordings she has left us.
I did not miss any of her concerts for two decades 60's and 70's...and always went backstage to greet her. Her warmth and gracefulness will remain with me always

So now it's a sin to criticize great artists? If we never criticize, we never grow as musicians. If everything De Larrocha, or Gould, or anyone else does is beyond criticism, we become mindless drones who think something is good not because it really is good, but because someone with a big name played it. That's not artistry, that's mindless conformity.
Gorgeous, musical, stylosh playing; de Larrocha was one of the great musicians and pianists. Did her humble servant of the music attitude prevent her from becoming the superstar of her more famous colleagues? No matter; for me, she is one of the supreme pianists, and her command of Spanish music is sublime.
Una grande sorpesa, questa mirabilissima esecuzione bachiana di alicia de Larrocha. pur conoscendo questa nota pianista la associavo soprattutto a interpretazioni di autori spagnoli di cui è una inarrivabile interprete.
Mdme De Larrocha palys this piece with warmth yet a crispness exudes throughout. Perhaps it's the bright key in which this piece is written. Glenn Gould's version of the French and English Suites are also quite formidable. Does anyone have any views on this?
In case anyone misunderstood my earlier comment, I think this is some of the most beautiful Bach I have ever heard (I didn't agree with Schonberg's review, by the way)
I heard Mme. de Larrocha play this in NY in Carnegie Hall in December 1969. I got tickets early and was lucky enough to have a front row seat. The hall was full of Juilliard faculty and Leopold Stokowski was only a few rows behind me! Harold Schonberg left before the encores and the next day panned the recital! (he didn't like the 2nd half) I was quite young and still relatively unsophisticated musically, but I remember the crystalline transparency she brought to the Bach (as she does here).
What a magnific interpretation!! What a great artist she is!!!Alicia de Larrocha is very well known for her superb interpretations of spanish music, but I think that she is much more than that. Mozart, Beethoven, Scarlatti, Grieg, Bach, Chopin, Liszt, Ravel, 2nd of Brahms, Shumann, Shubert, etc, etc, etc. I had the chance to be in many of her live concerts and, believe me, she has been one of the best pianist of our time. God bless you, Alicia!!!!!!!!

Well, here are my responses, movement by movement:
Allemande - Terrible. Bach is being forced to sound like Granados here.
Courante - Excellent, but lacking awareness of many of the basic harmonic relationships. Still excellent though.
Sarabande - Horrible. No sense of the deep romantic feelings conveyed in this movement.
Gigue - Wonderful. Perfect playing for this movement.

that all great soloists can help us to discover new sides of the neverending
Bach's universe. And not only those we
like better, but those we dislike as well.
I'll be looking for a CD by M.me de Larrocha: it's absolutely worth getting it.
P.S. the English suites by G.Gould are
my best loved rendition:outstanding.
Not the same for the Toccatas, omop.
