08:25-0:8:30, love how she strongly shouts "tiens!" in the moment, in the finale, just before Carmen is stabbed, when she throws the love ring Jose had given her...this was great to watch, but Jessye's voice isn't suited to Carmen, it's far too heroic and Wagnerian. She can sing Carmen quite excitingly and this was only a taping of the recording. Amazing stuff.

Great! This is one of the videos that made me wanted to sing opera and become a tenor when I saw this 15 years ago as a 16 year old-boy. Way to go still ;)

Schicoff qui a souvent chanté le rôle est excellent. Jessye semble déchiffrer la partition et semble ne rien comprendre à ce qu'elle chante. Elle confond Bizet avec Berlioz et n'est en aucun cas Carmen. D'ailleurs cet enregistrement a fait un flop total dans les pays francophones.

@romondesbert Non, je pense que Mrs.Norman, est magnifique et elle reste le meilleur chanteur de l'opéra qui n'a jamais chanté ce rôle.

@breakaliciouskid786 alors si vous pensez que Noman est la meilleure dans ce rôle c'est que vous n'y avez ecoute qu'elle ! Desole mais je persiste a dire qu'elle y est tres mauvaise, non sur le plan vocal mais sur celui du style et de l'interpretation du personnage.

She was a huge woman but has since slimed down by a lot. She also is very tall and he is of medium height but his voice can match her in power with no problem and they sound great together since it's a recording, she would not sing it on stage.

ive got this on DVD and the whole recording process they went through was really amazing. good/great singing, funny moments and you can almost see these singers for who they are away from their "opera personas"...key word, almost!

its the double disk set with Phillips "The Essential Jessye Norman" CD and this, the "Jessye Norman Sings Carmen" DVD

I too have this DVD and I watched it over and over again when I first got it. I'm always amazed at her performances. She gives her best even when she is alone at the piano. She feels what she sings and it translates even if you don't speak the language, and that's how it should be. What do you think??

I bought this in 1990 at my local record shop on VHS in perfect sound and they had lunch in Paris SHOWN where it was recorded AND WHERE INTERVIEWED, STILL HAVE THE VIDEO TAPE WHICH IN SOME PARTS ARE USED IN THEIR GREAT RECORDING----1988. THIS WAS A REHEARSAL. I DISCUSSED IT LATER WITH NEIL, IT WAS A GREAT TAPE WITH MUCH CONVERSATION BY JESSYE AND NEIL KIDDING ABOUT KILLING HER IN THE LAST ACT WHICH WAS COMING THE NEXT DAY. THEY LAUGHED AND SHE SAID YOUR COMING WITH A KNIFE THAT DAY!

One of the best tenor today. This rehearsal was a trully performance for me. Irreproachable! Ozawa, moments after this work said Mr.Shicoff made him cry. Me too, what an interpretation! I couldn`t help shedding tears!!!

Um dos melhores tenores na atualidade. Este ensaio foi uma verdadeira apresentação para mim. Irretocável! Ozawa, momentos depois deste trabalho disse que Shicoff conseguiu levá-lo às lágrimas. Comigo também ocorreu o mesmo, que interpretação!!! Não pude evitar as lágrimas!!!
