  • Re: "I made a mistake in the wording on my Painting Tombstones video. Can you catch it?" Is it the murmured word? I just assumed you wrote it in some old English way that was correct for the time and it wasn't actually a mistake. (If that is actually it, I mean) The only other thing is that lichen is pronounced like lie-kin and not litch-en but that's not on the tombstone so I'm guessing that's not it. I love your tutorials, all of them are top notch!

  • @scully33 That was it. That's how I missed it too. I first screwed it up but everytime I saw it thought it was okay because it looked like Old English. In regards to Lichen, hee! Yep, that's the Chicagoan in me. Say it the way it's spelled. heh.

  • Can i ask how long you have been able to store unused monster mud?

  • @HalloweensMyLife Surprisingly a long time. I had one batch for two years. Just have to mix it up again :)

  • i would write: "here lies chuck because he is dead."

  • @Garother heh :)

  • Does it really matter what color paint you use? This concept is pretty interesting! WOW! I have tons of drywall compound and colors of paint.... Before I waste it I will wait to find out about the paint color... (I did buy 1 gallon of dark gray for the wording and cracks on the tomb. I should have enough left over even from that to use for the M Mud...

  • @thepartypros Nope, because you'll be painting over it with Drylok. If you check out my 'Grime up Props video' you will see me use different colors of monster mud for all kinds of other things. It's like a prop maker's favorite material :)

  • Mark (partypros) once again! The graves are cut etc. They are looking really GREAT! Anyways I had a quick question before I paint.... The MONSTER MUD, where can I get that? IS that something I could get at home depo/lowes? I didnt wanna walk in there and ask for that and they look at me like I just told them I was Jesus or something.... LOL! (I put some decor wood stuff on and I wanna make it look more natural at some edges and I think that would do the trick before the dryloc... THANK YOU!

  • @thepartypros You make it. It's about 5 parts drywall compound and 1 part latex paint. That's a thick monster mud. Bear in mind that you can add more paint to the mix to make it thinner if you want. That ratio is changeable. Sometimes like to use a 4 to 1 ratio even 3 to 1 ratio when it needs to be thinner. If you get a bucket of the stuff, be sure to also get a drywall mixer drill bit because it's very hard to mix by hand. Full name is Sheetrock All-purpose Drywall Joint Compound.

  • how can you weatherproof it?

  • @dafsmom78 It's actually made to be weatherproof. You are good to go :)

  • p.s. I am goin to check out your forum and look for you sometime one of these evenings I am not working in the shop. I checked it out very brief and I know I will love reading everyone's postings! Pretty neat to see I am not alone out there with doing up Halloween! I used to do xmas but everyone is doing stuff and I am getting tired of the cold wet, snow, ice, and of course winds! Pa. can be very cold sometimes around that time of year! Anyways I used to make haunted houses when I was a kid so....

  • ok I was watching the paint part for sometime today taking notes... It was a little vague when it came to mixing the white with the gray.... and then the brown with the white. would u mind kind of explaining in detail how u mix them (by dabbing, stirring the brush etc. and do u do this on scraps) If you would not mind make so a idiot with not artistic concept would understand. I am very great full for all your time I have been taking! I wish u were close by so I could watch! LOL!

  • The bit you refer to.... Does it look like a drill bit in the kit? I have 2 others but the swirved grooves are about 1/16" long and the remaining in smooth to mount onto the router. I have been playing around with that one... Like before, You make it look like a child could pick it up and do this in seconds! To have a little craft talent would make things run smoother. But I am getting the hang of things... ha ha!

  • @thepartypros Ah, I think that's the problem. That sounds more like an engraver bit. Look for the Dremel 561 Multi-purpose Cutting bitl. There are 561B bits but that's the wrong one. Just a straight 561. For a video of the bit being used, search for 'Dremel's No. 561 Multi-Purpose Bit' at this YouTube site.

  • Yeah, lights and sound is what I do to earn a living... If you have a private email I can send you a few pics. Photos dont do any justice though.... You really cannot capture the lightning effect.... But imagiine 20 huge strobes flashing at each of their own rates of speed for 3 seconds.... While that happens I have a thunder track sampled and the area shakes! I change my voice to sound like the purple people eater or just a dark evil deep voice.... see prev msg for my email ad. Thanks again!

  • what was the orange stuff you had in the glass container? And where is a place to buy that? craft store? also when you mixed the white in, did you rub some on a cloth or something and mix the gray in with it and then wiped it off? That is what I kind of thought was being done... before you swiped across back and forth etc. (i thought i had everything and then i saw you did the white paint... ahhh!) latex i am guessing too?

  • @thepartypros The orange stuff is artist's acrylic pain. Shade is raw sienna. The brand doesn't matter but this is Utrecht.

I had some gray in a corner of the pallet, and white in another. Dipped the brush in white and then lightly dipped the brush into the gray. In a clear section of the pallet I kind of squished the brush repeatedly to blend it a bit. There is also a paper towel on the pallet and that's where I start to wipe it off. The white paint is exterior latex paint.

    Good questions!

  • @Scaryladyvideos - And one last question..... The towel you put 3 coats of dryloc on. Did you lay it out to paint and then place it on top? Or was it glued and then hand painted once the glue dried? I know I am a pain in the butt! I am very great full for not only the help but how quick you have been to respond back!! (I played with the dremel router today. You make it look so easy to make a channel for the pipes!

  • @thepartypros I am nervous to do the wording!! I intend to play lots more before I do it on one of the tombs I have cut out already. Otherwise I think I got this.. (i think) LOL! p.s. I gotta say you not only have a great how to video to show dummies like me how to make these great tombs! I wish I had 1/4 of the talent you have!! What I lack in artistic ability etc. I make up for in special fx lighting, sound, etc.

  • @thepartypros Yeah, I still get nervous everytime I start a new stone. You put a lot work into the thing. I made a mistake in the wording on my Painting Tombstones video. Can you catch it??? No one ever has ;)

So, an FX lighting and sound eh? Awesome, I have a new resourse. That stuff usually baffles me.

  • @thepartypros It is easy to Dremel the channel so try the other bit that comes with the kit. One of them has spiral cuts all the way to the end. Also, use the low setting on the Dremel or you'll melt the foam.

The towel was dipped in monster mud, placed on the stone and allowed to dry. Then I painted the tombstone with Drylok giving an extra third coat to the cloth to help it look more like stone. That cloth is a flannel sheet remnant. It's my favorite type of cloth for these kids of things.

  • i can watch this video over and over again =)

  • Terra can you please tell me what is the name of the song ?

  • Just wanted to know if you could use acrylic paint instead of laytex paint.

  • @micorim Sure, the raw sienna acrylic paint I use for the rust/lichen colors hold up great.

  • nice clean workshop you have there ..want to swap for mine?

  • @Dragonstud No way! That's my happy place... ;)

  • What type of Drylock do you use and what's the purpose of the Drylock? Does the drylock harden the styrofoam?

  • I use the latex Drylok (gray if you can get it - but it can be tinted). It does several things: Sand is in it for stone texture, waterproofs, great base color and it does toughen up the foam.

  • What is monster mud?

  • It's a neat concoction of 5 parts drywall compound to 1 part exterior latex paint.

  • for your finish you used your tea stain technique, do you find that looks better than using a sea sponge and dabbing the paint on? Thank you so much for your videos

  • Well, it's close. I think the sponge technique gives a stone a marble appearance and looks very nice but I would still do the tea-staining over that. I think the tea-staining mimics the effect of pollution and grime accumulating over the decades.

  • I looked everywhere for something like this and you took me to a whole notha level! :) Yes! Thank you! Happy Haunt!

  • Cool! Can't wait to see what you come up with.

  • thats so sweet

  • Thanks :)

  • @Scaryladyvideos your welcome

  • What do you call the metal brush thing (something Shaver?) and where can I find it?

  • It's called the Stanley SureForm Shaver and it's in the tools section at Home Depot and Lowe's. It's basically a rasp.

  • Thanks so much for your hints. I'm making my first tombstone which is Jack Skelington. I don't want it to look as beat up but I do want it to look like stone. It took a couple of tries but it looks GREAT thanks to your video.

  • Your so welcome. A Jack tombstone sounds neat.

  • I love your videos. They've already taught me so much and I've only known about your channel for two days now. I did have a question, though. What kind of foam do you use for the body?

  • @cerickNY Thank You :)

The foam I use is styrofoam (pink foam - at Home Depot) and blue foam (Dow - at Lowe's). They are the same thing and work great for their ability to hold details from the Dremeling I do for the epitaph.

  • Fantastic!

What is the name of the stuff you use for rust color and where did you pick it up at?

  • Thank you. It's called Raw Sienna and I bought it years ago at the Utrecht Art store in Portland. You can use any brand of acrylic paint in the raw sienna color though.

  • Cool video, Doug! Come blog with us on CR4 sometime.

  • Doug? How would you think my name is Doug. Is my voice that low? heheh

  • Sorry about that! I subscribed to two new channels this morning and mixed-up[ the names. I hope that Doug isn't too upset that I called him "ma'am" :)

  • Oh, that's okay. Made me chuckle :)

  • Do you put monster mud atop the foam or is that just paint?

  • The draping cloth was first dipped in monster mud, draped on the stone and allowed to dry. Then I put three coats of Drylok over the cloth but only two on the tombstone itself. No monster mud on the foam just Drylok.

  • Did you use a sand blaster for the cracks?

  • Hi there :) No, I just scratched at it using my Sureform shaver. Then made it deeper using straight acetone.

  • AWESOME! of course... ;)

  • WOW!!! Great how to!!

  • My my my, you certainly don't sound scary ;]

Awesome, awesome, awesome tutorial - I can consider myself subscribed :D

By the way, would you happen to be on HauntSpace?

  • Well, at times my hubby would disagree ;)

My home forum is at HalloweenForum.

  • Nice work and an great tutorial on your techniques!

  • Thanks so much :) It was fun to see me work in super speed.

  • Top Notch!!! What kind of styrofoam do you use for the tombstone and where did you buy it?

  • Thank you :) I used pink foam. I got this at Home Depot. You can get the same stuff but it's blue at Lowes.

  • first thing. i want to thank you for sharing this video with us.this gives me some ideas for my tombstones that i want to do in the front yard for our halloween party.keep up the good work.5*

  • all i can say is wooooooooooooooooooooooow

  • Great Video!!!

I have always wanted to make my own tombstones... Now I know where to start

  • Thanks for making this!

The spray paint i used always ate into the foam!

  • Yep, mine does too and I like that! To me, that is what makes it look great. The acetone in the spray paint just eats away at it like the years do to actual tombstones.
