Oooh, I know how it works! You get one of the VCR's that can have timed recordings, then set the recording to the point that the tape runs out, then the VCR automatically rewinds!

nope, it's powered by the vcr motor, so all you have to do is set the record timer to record everyday at the same time. No resetting it.

Hilarity would ensue. Though it wouldn't be hard to make a failsafe which would immediately slacken the line for 5 seconds as soon as any resistance (for example, the cats head holding up the gears), which would give the cat enough time to pull it's head back and start thinking twice about messing with your stuff again.

I probably would have ripped a motor out of it and used any uC I could add a real time clock to instead.

Some VCRs just go into error if a bunch of micro switches and optical interrupters are not activated in a certain sequence.

Depending on the VCR it might be easier to just use a picaxe.

I think the idea behind it is to use the VCR's internal timer so that it will feed the cat at a certain time for the specified duration. Just like when you set up your VCR to auto record.
