  • Videogames are art. Why ? MGS is my answer, just that.

  • Get those dumbass critics to play Shadow of the Colossus or Journey

  • "Are video games art?" should be a dumb question. Unfortunately there are some, including artists, who think video games are not art. Artists that claim this are usually elitists or close minded. By definition, even corporate art (such as ads and logos) are art. In fact, the great thing about art is that you can call anything art. Art is true freedom for the mind. In my opinion, people who claim any kind of art is not "art" are some sort of Nazi. They tried to rid the world of "not art" art.

  • okami ftw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Majorasword64 May I ask why?

  • Shadow Of the Colossus. Need I say more?

  • Nintendo classics. Period. When Gameboy boxes still existed, the cover art was beautiful, the graphics and detail, the holofoil, the horizontal seal, the writing. Pokemon is my favourite, my friend showed me his copy of Ruby - it was breathtaking, i was only 5, but once i turned 6, my aunt purchased a blue gba sp, and Pokemon sapphire. The box had a present like feel, the shiny light heavyweight box, the detail... The storyline. Her beauty was destroyed after Emerald.

  • @NintendOttawa Right on, I remember when the instruction booklets had lots of cool artwork and it was a real treat to look at them. Nowadays, booklets are maybe 5 pages long and have bland backgrounds. You'd better believe when I make video games the artwork will be everywhere!

  • I'm sure nobody will think of this, but the fire emblem series has fantastic visual art (especially in the GBA games) but the music is fantastic. The final boss music, which has remained the same throughout the series, is beautifully crafted and epic. It left a lasting impression on me. I highly suggest looking it up.

  • anybody that says video games aren't art simply shows that they have not a single clue about art.

  • My answer:No

  • not easy to find in today's mainstreams. Its not easy when the focus is entertainment first. However, yes there is high art in video games. Allow me to point to some worthy examples-- Final Fantasy IV, Suikoden II, the Witcher series, Braid, the Uncharted Series, and Heavy Rain. There are other examples I'm sure I'm leaving out but these had the most impact on me.

  • Herman Melville? Can you compare it to the movie Casa Blanca? There's a very real difference between regular art and fine art. In that regard, you'll be hard-pressed finding a video game that could be considered high art. To do that, you need to find a theme. It needs to have a purpose, something that it can convey to the player that they'll never forget-- something that could even change them or teach them something. That is rare. But video games have the capacity to do it. Its just

  • I don't think the argument is so much "does a video game have art in it", but rather "can a video game be considered HIGH art?" What is high art? High art isn't just expression. It sends a message from the artist to the viewer. Its not about what looks good. Its about proving a point, showing a theme, teaching something, providing a different perspective. Do video games do this? Can you compare any video game to a painting by Leonardo Da Vinci? Can you compare it to a written work from

  • @Str8Murder there are a couple of games that can be considered "high art". Look at the Metal Gear Solid Series. Probably one of the most famous for its philosophy, perspectives, not to mention both the graphics and the soundtracks are amazing. So in some cases yes, video games could be consider to be high art.

  • if someone plays, say, skyrim, and doesn't think that's art, they're fucking BATSHIT. actually, bethesda is fucking pro at doing that.

most people who whinge about this are whinging about call of duty. which is still ART. go look at the fucking concept art, it's beautiful. sure the story isn't exactly 'hurr durr artz' but it's still fucking art.

there are FEW games that aren't really... art.

tho my boyfriend thinks okami looks like a kid game. >> oh well.

  • Mario Paint makes this review VERY ironic.

  • Metroid Prime. 'Nuff said.

  • Metroid Prime. 'Nuff said.

  • I absolutely think that video games are artwork. I in fact just posted a video about it if any of you are interested in checking it out. I discuss some of my favorite video game artwork and music (another form of art).

  • Our GREEDY CROOKS, FLAG-WAVING LIARS, PRO-RELIGIOUS BIGOTS, MASS MURDERERS, SERIAL KILLERS, & just AWFUL LOW-LIFE R obsessed in ART....

    watch?v=cnO8zKH5s_k

VIDEO GAMES R not REAL! They R 4 FUN, yet we have these LIARS pretend that they R REAL to SCAPEGOAT our GAMERS & distract OTHERS from knowing what a SHIT that they really R....

    watch?v=sDkhzHQO7jY

They hated our GAMES in GAMEPLAY....

    watch?v=mmMv0ceWTVQ

They won't be happy until everything is ARTsy-FARTsy like they R!! >=(

  • Video games are in fact art. Creating the characters, stories, places, weapons, and accessories are in fact art. Without any of those things, there will be no such things as video games.

  • I'm starting to think ur not a dev just pretending to be one to proove ur point cuz I have friends in ubisoft mtl and trust me there's allot more to it than than the end product

  • My sensible argument is if u don't think what u do is art u don't take pride in it etc I read books and i collect games cuz I love them and many of them go beyond art vg music is art cutscenes art WTF someone is behind the scenes doing all that there are story boards maybe u need to learn something about art aswell as videogames

  • To architaylor if ur a game dev and ur defending the fact they say it's not art I don't wanna play any of ur games maybe u should change professions u already fail

  • @tristar1215 Unfortunately I don't think anything I say will convince you to actually *think* about it rather than blundering around with your poorly formed argument. You have to try to separate art from entertainment and I get the impression you don't actually understand that concept. I urge you to read a few books about it, form a sensible opinion maybe. I love games love creating them, not being art isn't always a bad thing.

  • It's is art the metal gear series reached me in ways that Hollywood never can I payed 700 for a ps3 for mgs 4 and worth every cent I reared during the shadow Moses flashback I never tear in movies mgs for life also alpha please make a rant on this fuck heads at rare. We want killer instinct 3 please maybe they'll listen

  • Entertainment =/= Art. I'm a game developer and I'm actually writing a university paper on this subject and it's significantly more complex than most people think. Art isn't just about expression or visuals it's a lot deeper than that. Before calling opposition to the argument "narrow minded assholes" I suggest you read material from Lev Manovich or David Fenner.

  • pure art, I always try to seek games with a similar feeling to those I like the most, all the games I own are usually gory games and I have a lot of games with metal music in it, it's all a matter of style what makes a good game for me. graphics don't mean shit.

  • wat your doing right now is pure artistical expresion,it is wat make us truly free atleast in soul,im glad to listen living beings like you brother who truly show a soul...

  • ofcourse they are art & even more..a prove of that is castlevania lords of shadows+ it is a master piece in every mean, music, art desing, story, the poetic soul that has that maked unique & very especial..but is art in almoust everything in this universe

  • dom groing a beard in GOW 3 cos he shot maria ,,was definatley art and artful when he saved the team with his life .......that should have won an ocsar ,,why not it had better acting i it that saving private ryan....but after ASSASSINS CREED BROTHERHOOD had all the replicated art of in the vatican(and other roman buildings from the great italian masters ,,that would shut any art critic up ,cos then they would be saying copying the masters is not art,and they wouldnt dare

  • Video games are and have æsthetics

  • Video games surpass art. Period.

  • @bladebison That is probably one of the stupidest things I have ever read.

  • Video games are above art. No medium can provide a more pleasing visual, auditory, and emotional experience as the best, most masterfully created video games.

  • You have to admit that Final Fantasy games always have awesome art put into them, even if you dislike the series.

  • my favorite game art so far has to be ICO and shadow and breath of fire IV. man breath of fire IV its just awesome its like playing a comic book everytiome i see it im like man the devs did the right thing picking this artstyle i hope i see more cell shaded games in the future too like XIII or SSFIV

  • The king of fighter series and the disgea series as well with great animation and the KOF games backgrounds are awesome and beautiful that's why I keep playing the Kof13

  • I agree with you, but I will also say that being artsy isn't enough. A game, first and foremost, has to be FUN and PLAYABLE.

  • (...) But a powerful speech can be expressful as well as our actions, mannerisms etc. Being creative also doesn't justify calling it art. You can build a house, paint a dull portrait, hell you can even create life at this point. And you have to take into consideration the relativity of it all. Many great painters of the renaissance painted their masterpieces because they were paid to do so. Today, it would be almost absurd. Anyway this is a philosophical debate and i've got 20 characters left :/

  • I can't explain what art is so no. Art is such a vague term nowadays that it can't be coherently defined. There are always contradictions in such claims because there are aspects of videogames that are ''artistic'' from an academic aspect, and others that represent real world mechanics (in a sense that there's a very technical, almost scientific backround as well). However, i do think that there is room left for expression and i most certainly am not a ludologist (continued...)

  • I came up with a sweet, undeniable and yet simple definition of what art is....

...Art is everything you wanna look at/experience/hear again....

  • AlphaOmegaSin, you are my fucking nerdy gaming hero. You have given me a whole new outlook on what I've been wanting to do with my life, I want to make video games damn it! These are the only things I've been -really- passionate about. Sure I may not know every game out there, and I may not have the biggest collection, but everyone that I have I've adored and admired and respect the creators who made them.

Thank You, I've regained hope for my future.

  • List of games that have great sad plots,

Bioshock 2, Gear Of War, and most of all....RED DEAD REDEMPTION!

  • Rayman: Origins, L.A. Noire, Donkey Kong Country Returns (sunset sequences), and Little Big Planet come to mind :)

  • Yeah of course

  • I had someone say video games aren't art. I sat his ass down and made him play Pong for 12 hours without stop after that I made him play Super Metroid he then agreed with me video games are indeed a form of art.

  • I'm citing this video as one of my sources for a research paper on the same subject. Greatest source ever, lol.

  • Art is anything that people can have opinions on where there isn't a total agreement to its status if that makes any sort of sense. It has music, actual images, story, voice acting, marketing etc. Oh yeah, definitely a form of art that we gamers love to appreciate.

  • Video Games are beautiful. They can portray a story and idea, in my eyes, like nothing else can. Its like an interactive movie, complete with musical scores and everything. I really think since VG are a worldwide industry, that it is one of the many things that can make this world better if taken seriously,

  • (continued) if something is has meaning to you then it has meaning to you, nothing anyone else says matters

  • I think of games as art in all aspects, including in my opinion the most overlooked aspect when inquiring if games are indeed art, programming. It the glue that holds all of the parts together, that allow you that super fluent character movement and animation that help portray whatever you are trying to portray. I have heard many art history teachers state how artists fought for decades or more to get their art form officially recognized, but who gives a shit about what others think.

  • Im an upstarting game programmer and i have to say games are hands down art. i dont do the actual graphics for the game (my girlfriends brother does that aspect) and some of the stuff he has put together for my games is breathtaking. Also on top of that my girlfriend herself does my storylines and some of the stuff she has written is novel worthy. I may sound biast because of the people i have heping me but im just being honest, GAMES ARE ART!!

  • I once wondered if video games art, and then i realized "how is it not"

  • I think that as long as a video game produces some sort of emotional reaction on someone, whether it’s the art design, the story or the music… hell yeah they are art

  • i know a game with very similar art to okami. its called jet set radio future, i like the art style because of how different it looks. even though im a metal head the music is pretty cool too.

  • In a way Minecraft

  • Shadow of the Colossus is art *o*

  • Mother, earthbound, mother 3 right there. The music is art. The graphics arae art. The emotional ideas that it give off is art. Fuck whoever says it, video games are most deffinatly art

  • Videos games are art even non-stylized games.

  • did u guys play "flower"

  • SILENT HILL 2 If anyone disagrees with me plz kill yourselves !

  • Two Words: Cel Shading.

  • i really accept that video games are art, they develops our creativity

  • Dementia is an MF'r. To think people out there refuse to say that video games are a form of art just shows how much there are misinformed today.

  • Video games are a special type of art due to the fact that the gamer can also act as the artist and not only the game creators act as the artist

  • Want proof video games are art?

    Mother 3 in general.

Beautifully simple visuals, a story that WILL put you in tears, and a soundtrack impossible to not remember.

  • @themangOMEGA Mother 2 was beautiful aswell.

  • That is a great video! I think the same way you do about it, and obviously a lot of other people do. Liked!

  • Without a doubt games are art.

Writing stories is considered art, games have stories and dialogue.

Digital image design is considered art, games have graphics that were made with computers.

Music and acting are considered art, games have music and most have voice acting or some kind.

Put it together - games are the sum of many things considered to be art, and are thus art.

  • Yes they are. Since the day I made super Mario jump by pushing a button, I knew they were the shit. If you look at it, videogames have it all; great music, unbelievable incredible awesome fucking great stories (final fantasy games, and lots of RPG's), amazing designs and nowadays they look better than lots of classical paintings; not to mention the hard work they take to be created. I believe that sooner or later videogames will, and must, be considered the ultimate expression of humanity's art.

  • Of course they are art.

  • Borderlands? Shadow of the Colossus? ICO? The Last Guardian? Minecraft? I'd be damned if they weren't considered art .

  • who the fuk disliked this? really? smh

  • thy deff can be

  • Yes, video games are art. Example, Dead space, the game is so well done, on visuals, music, and enemy design. It makes you want to play through that is why it's art, if it can make you stick to it until the end then yeah it's art.

  • some are some arn't

  • Video games are some of my favorite kind of art!

  • The Mario games and the Zelda games are just amazing. I also love the old game's "Classical" look. Art can be basically anything, it's such a loosely used term.

  • Definitly Shadow of the Collosus belongs in an art museum.

  • @heartofadragoness i would even say that they are the ultimate art form, compination of very many arts into a great package that even takes the gamer into a differend world.

  • Video games are most definately art I remember playing Legend of Zelda Windwaker one of my favorite nintendo games and being blown away with the music and the art style. Props to you bill rock on!

  • copy the link here, the guy who owns the website is an asshole:

    ww w.blogs.suntimes.co m/ebert/2010/04/video _games_can_ never_be_art.h tml

by the way, I agree with alphaomegasun.

take out all the spaces in the link first

  • god of war games = art.

shadow of the colossus = art

    folklore = art

    eternal sonata = art

and one of the games i REALLY think its art... Valkyira Chronicles... u said okami its watching a water paint come to life.... play valkyria...

  • its not just the visuals that make up the games art but also the gameplay itself. When developers put time and effort into creating an engine that is well-balanced and fun to play, I definitely believe thats an ART.

  • if anything has a sense of aesthetics and pleasing to see, then it is art.

    so videogames is art

  • Most good games (and even some bad games) are art.

  • point taken

  • @ 1:20

Me: Please say Okami, please say Okami, please say Okami...

    YES!

  • video games are so many different art forms put together. Creating a video game is an artistic expression, and then when you play and explore that game, you are being artistic as well. It's awesome.

  • @heartofadragoness yes they are

  • Skyrim has beautiful art it's even on their loading screen

  • Shadow of the Colossus is the best example of art.

  • Alpha would you say that Kingdom Hearts is a great example?

  • For me Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the patriots is the most artistic game ever!!

  • There is absolutely no doubt that Video Games are art !

Ive played games with extraordinary scenery and I think that Okami is the best example for this !

( Ive not even played it but I still think that it is awesome ! )

    I subbed !

  • Video games are better than taking a huge white piece of paper and spilling ink on it, framing it and titling it as "My Mother" . Or even better , don't paint anything at all, Show 3 white panels together and calling it "Nothing" . Not saying that all Artworks in museums are bad, but stuff like this get in too and I really don't get it. It ain't Art if I can do it. Period.

  • Video games are not art? I present shadow of the colossus

  • Videogames are not just art, it´s cultural possessions.

  • if a city can be considered a work of art, if a computer generated rendition of a house design can be called artistic. then video games have at least 2 art forms right there. not to mention what goes into the charecters, tools, and various interfaces for every type of game out there.

  • Yes, Silent Hill 2 is one as well.

  • I believe most videogames could easily be considered art, comparitively to Films. I do feel the western games market is seriously lacking artistically, though. Great story telling, contrasting with beauitful visuals make for beautiful art.

  • why is there always one person that thumbs down alphas video i dont get it hes amazing, and yes video games are arts wonderful forms of arts

  • If films are considered art then video games should be too

  • Of course video games are an art! Just look at how much time and effort has to be put into coming up with the actual video game: the characters, the environment, the material items, the music, the graphics, the sound effects, and most importantly the story. As I always tell people who ask my opinion on this, every video game is and has a story. And, every story has an author, and it's these stories that are video games that stick with us forever. So, yes, video games are an art and that's that!

  • I would most definitely say video games are a form of art. It is in many ways an expression of ones self. The only thing that separates it from a painting or a sculpture is that instead of being an expression of a singular person it is the expression of an amalgam of people who put their hearts and souls into the dialog, characters and stories they create.

  • Not to mention people usually (if not always) draw, sketch or paint ideas for characters, environments, weapons, creatures, etc. Before they are the official idea for whatever they are looking for in their video game. So yeah, video games are art hands down. You cant argue against it really.

  • Skyward Sword. The most artistic game I've ever seen.

  • Comment removed

  • Bioshock

  • They're a "functional" form of art. Most definitely art!

  • Games artisticly beautiful: Skyward Sword, Street Fighter 4, Guilty Gear, Wind Waker,....

  • guy in brutal legend... Jack black.

  • Muramasa Demon Blade is definitely a good example of video game "ART"

  • If it can go in a museum then its art

  • I just got BitTrip Saga in the mail yesterday

  • the mgs series some of the cutscenes are art

  • And what about L.A. Noire? How it brought that 1940s noire crime thriller feel and made it interactive? Or how long it took to get the character designs at a point where the faces are on-par with the actors? To me, videogames are art, interactive and enjoyed by the masses.

  • I agree, Video games is definitely art.

  • yes, cept for money hogs

  • Alpha Omega Sin: Are video games art?

    Me: FUCK YEAH THEY ARE!!!!!!!!

  • Ratchet and Clank and Jet Grind Radio prove that games are art

  • Of course video games are art .... they are a combination of different arts ... professionals working on many sides , visuals , music , voice talent .. many differents parties are involved in several aspects of design and emotion are poured into many games . etc . when it comes down to it it's another form of media / entertainment . and having one of the unique elements alot of certain spectator arts don't have , which is interactivity for the audience ... art inspires and alot of games do that

  • Rogert Hebert saying games can't be art because they're interactive was stupid as hell. Anyone who has ever been to a museum knows about interactive displays that you have to *gasp* interact with to get the full experience.

  • @16BitMedic You mean Roger Ebert? Yeah, that's true. He says art isn't something you can "win or lose." But there is really no reason to say it isn't art just because of that. Plus, what about Martial Arts, lol? Says right in the name that it is a form of art, and you can certainly win and lose at that! lol

  • @Bonzardo Sorry didn't know his name was spelled that way. I honestly don't care for movies nearly as much as I do games so I'm not really knowledgeable on who's who with movie critics. And yeah that's a good point you make there.

  • @16BitMedic Ah, lol, I'm the same way actually, only reason I know what I know about him is because I did my own speech about the topic, and I counter some of his points. (One of the video respnoses to this topic is mine actually)

  • Final Fantasy also owns all about gaming art.

  • Expression. That's the keyword here.

Are video games art? Yes, and NO. Some games, are most diffidently art. Shadow of the Colossus, Final Fantasy 7, Suikoden 2, and games of the like. These games are art. Because they express something more then just the need to rake in the dollar signs.

Some games however, are not art. The sole purpose of these games to take money from consumers, and while they return in entertainment, it's nothing deep or impactful.

  • I thought of Okami before you even said it.

  • 3d isn't authentic art, but its still art.......traditional art is made from Scratch, pure talent...3d is,umm...information

  • Games r art. For example look at skyrim or marvel vs capcom 3

  • I definitely agree as does the concensus. In fact, my channel is FULL of art, check it out! I know, I know...shameless:) Love the channel, topics, and video's. Keep'em coming!

  • if you even conciser no... your fucking stupid... offensive as an artist ..

  • when u see a red square on top of orange square displayed in a museum and get told thats art... yeah video games are more art than alot of art out there

  • Definitely art

  • Video games are art. Like Silent Hill series thats all art especially 2 , not only is it a awesome and dark game but it makes you think with its symbolic story , like art is supposed to. Some of my other favorite examples are bioshock , metal gear series , I have no mouth but I must scream and Killer 7. There are tons of video games with just awesome art styles like the metal slug visually and can have complex stories like deus ex series.

  • RESIDENT EVIL 6 TRAILER IS POSTED UP, OHH YAAAAAAAAHHHH BAYYBAY

  • I finished Brutal Legend last year, it was AMAZING.

  • Knew you were gonna say Okami. And I agree 100%

  • ok i have to come out and say skyward sword

    okami

    im done

  • Did someone tell you recently games aren't art? I haven't known anyone to believe that personally.

  • Games considered art? Sorry but if you've been playing video games since the 80's-90's then it's a no brainer, hell a lot of them, have been playing like it's a movie i.e. Metal Gear Solid. Some games even have concept arts to give you a view of the devs have been making before the final touches of the game itself. So it's not just art, it's a test of knowledge, skill, determination, passion, dedication, and most importantly fun factor. Look at TimeSplitters that's art in it's own right.

  • Cinema wasn't considered an art form in the beginning, and games are in this period of time. In my opinion, The Metal Gear Solid series is the definition of art in video games. MGS 2 in particular.

  • It can be art. It isn't automatically art, like a drawing/movie/painting isn't automatically art.

  • Mother 3

    Nuff said.

  • Odin Sphere! Now that is fucking art. Also pretty much all the Shin Megami Tensei games too.

  • \\Video games are indeed art, take a look at Flower, Dust, or hell even Mass Effect has good art. It just depends on how the person looks at art, like you said being narrow-minded assholes, or embraceable of new things. Every game has some art, character models, background design, animation, and the environment and soo much more are made from the ground up with sketches, followed by making those designs come to life.

  • Hey have you seen concept art for Halo/AvP? and Okami was a great game/artistic view

  • oh and the reason I think games are art is because well when you make art its coming from your imagination and soul. The fact that people play games, go to art places and hear music is to somewhat in many ways get a glimps of something kinda like looking into a window to another world.. because that is what it is to me at times. God himself is an artist look around you there is design all over this was not all here just by chance.. you dont just tip a bucket of paint and get the monalisa.

  • agree with you 100% and okami was a great example

  • did rayman origins have so articst desing in that game?

  • I am playing bullet storm and at times even when I am getting shot I look around lol its amazing.

  • I agree 100%.

  • Yes they are no doubt about it!

  • Of course video games are art. Some of the greatest stories, graphics and musical compositions have come from video games.

  • I'd say yes for sure, but it's just arguing semantics. It depends on what someone defines as art. Some art critics will look at a painting and say 'that isn't art'... It just depends on what they are looking for. Movies can be art, games can be art, paintings can be art, music can be art etc... I'm sure some people would even be able to find something artistic in the way a particular car crumples in a car crash... It's in the eye of the beholder.

  • How are video games not art?

  • i dont care what anyone says , games like mf3 and bf3 Are art. think of how much time gets put in them , how can someone say arkham is art and mw3 isnt

  • ALL VIDEO GAMES SHOULD BE CONSIDERED ART PERIOD.

  • I know you didn't really like the game, but Final Fantasy XIII's environments are absolutely jaw-dropping when you have your PS3 hooked up to a giant TV via HDMI. All of Gran Pulse was just gorgeous.

  • Gaming has everything. How can it not be art? It has all aspects! Imagination, education, everything!

  • How did I know you were gonna say okami, I loooovvveeeee okami :)

  • i wont answer that because it just basically follows what ThePianoPhenomenon said...

  • Plenty of my favorite games are art to me :D <3!

  • Certain games are classed as art for me but not just art, masterpieces such as Shenmue.

  • Final Fantasy has alot of art into its series
