Before the ballpoint ben, the only pens available were those with nibs, you would fill your pen with ink, then attach the nib, and from there write whatever you wanted. Nibs are fragile, and can break if you are careless. Roald Dahl has a great story about just this sort of thing in part one of his autobiography Boy. Going Solo is part two. Hope that helps. All errors are my own, corrections/additions are most welcome!

It seemed a bit out of place that he would mention nibs in a 1950-1970's setting, since ballpoint pens were well established by then - but maybe that school was a bit old fashioned. Or maybe the teacher was a bit old fashioned and used the term "nib" for any pen, and the (now completely butchered) joke is that he had a feeling that they would be writing (about) Enobarbus using their fingers.
