I was not aware of the Maratha origin of Tanjore Kings! I have the versiion of this popular Abhang by Kishori Amonkarji but the Sisters have done justice to carnaticstyle mixed with Abhang style very well!Having been born and brought up in Mumbai their diction and phonemes of Marathi is flawless! Not a hint of Tamil Accent creepng!
It is typical of that cultureless self congratulating philistine Fat slob Jayalalitha that her TV channel interrupts divine music with their own adverts! creeps!
there was a company called RAGA which issued CDs and had an introductory track for the advertising jingle for basmati rice as track no 1!
Later they combined the track into the opening sequence of classical performance of bhajans by Kumar Gandharva-ji seamlessly! when it was a discreet track one I could skip the track and some zealot recognized and got wise and incorporated adverts in to the opening track seamlessly! It is this I hate
there is a thin line between staying within context and straying... and i think the artists have only brought a lot of joy through this.. we must not be stuffy and reject all the other possible ways of expression in an art. the artist and the listeners must have a good taste annd discretion!
The song is good. But singing Abhangs in Carnatic music concerts makes no sense. Would any Hindustani concert include a couple of Pada Varnams or a Thiruppavai? It is absurd to incorporate all sorts of music into a Carnatic concert. If Abhangs are ok, then why stop there? Why not a Russian folk song or an Assamese movie song, as light numbers in a "Carnatic" concert?
How does it matter ? As long as the singers are good and the audience enjoys it. Obviously a movie song or folk song would have been so wrong as it would change the whole mood of the concert, but not this!!
The raga is Bhatiyal. It is a Thukaram Abhang that the sisters themselves tuned. They mentioned it at last year's concert at Rutgers, NJ. A brilliant concert btw.
Lyrics Bolava Vitthal, pahava Vitthal, karava Vitthal, jeeva-bhaava. (Chant Vitthal, imagine Vitthal, live Vitthal with all your heart and soul) yeNe sose man, jhaale haav bhari, parata maghaari, ghet naahi (The mind gave away to the greed for god, now it refuses to return to itself) Bandhanaa pasuni, ukalalyaa gaathi deta aali mithi, saavakaash (I was liberated from all the moorings, and then I could, sublime into him)
Excellent rendition by the two ladies!! Abhangas have seeped into the Tamil culture with the Tanjore Marathas who've settled in the state since the times of Shiva.
What touched me in their rendition was a special underscore to the melody. In the conventional Marathi abhangas, percussion are an equally dominant ingredient.
Perfect pronunciations, subtle arrangement- a refreshing change from the familiar Abhanga setup. My 20 hour day has ended with immense satisfaction! Kudos! Nandiri! :)
well this would be probably R&G's best rendition, such a wonderful song presented xtremely well.. cheers....but as usual the mridangam s very light...not much of enthu with the player, thts the only disappointment:-( the concert could ve been a lot better if he was more cheerin... uses same fingerin for the entire song as lik cinema songs....
what co ordiantion...in music, in dressing too....so imagine what discipline it needs!!! and so much importance given to proounciation...inspite of being tamilians.....I really adore them!!!
Beautiful bhAtiyAr. There was a song on Doordarshan years back for an ad for the National Literacy Mission. That was the first time I heard the rAgA. Was captivated instantly. The sisters sing with great clarity of shruthi and pronunciation. Awesome modulation as well.
hats off!

Chant Vitthal, imagine Vitthal, live Vitthal with all your heart & soul
The mind gave away to the greed for god, now it refuses to return to itself
I was liberated from all the moorings, and then I could, sublime into him
This is not mine...Am just having the meaning re-posted here so tat it might be easy for viewers to find out...

After all concerts are meant to promote bhakti. If russian or english music can convey and promote they can also be included in karnatic music !!!
Jai Jai Vittal !!!

Btw, which is this raga? I remember a song from a programme by the National Literacy Mission, that Doordarshan used to telecast in the early 90s.

An additional stanza, not sung above-
tuka mhane deh, dharila vitthala
kaam-krodhe kele, ghara ritey
(Says Tuka, Vitthal possessed his coil
Lust and temper, fled away)

The song was rendered with all the stanzas but was edited by Jaya TV due to time constraints.
