Director : On the table in front of you is some Santory Whiskey. Got it? Build up your feelings, then gently look into the camera, and kindly, say it as though you are meeting an old friend. Give everyone a Kanpai! (cheers!) Santory time!
@ggboy01 Bob : Alright, does he want me to turn from the right, or from the left?
Translator : Um, he seems like he is pretty much ready to go, but he wants to know when you start rolling, and when he looks toward the camera, should he look toward it from the left or should he look toward it from the right? He just wants to confirm that point.
@ggboy01 Director : Either is fine! It really doesn't matter! We don't have time for this, Bob, so quickly build up your emotions and look straight into the camera, straight on, gently but with passion, got it? Got it?
Translator : Right side, and with intensity.
Bob : Is that everything? I mean it seemed like he said quite a bit more than that.
@ggboy01 Director: What you're saying is not just about the whiskey. Do you get that? Say it gently like you're meeting an old friend. Gently, and kindly. And let the emotions come up from inside, make sure you don't forget that!
Translator : Like an old friend, and into the camera.
Bob: OK
Director: You got it? You love whiskey. It's sunory time. OK?
Cut cut cut cut! Do you really know what's going on? This has to represent the product. It's expensive, the most expensive among Suntory's whiskey lineup. So do it more elegantly, yeah? It's not everyday whiskey.
Translator : Could you do it slower and more intensity.
what gets me about this scene is the Japanese is actually really really simple haha. I'm pretty sure any Japanese high school student could translate what the guy's saying into english for him easily enough
@GaijinDiaries I beg to differ. While the basics behing what is being said is very simple, not many Japanese people could accurately translate what's being said in Japanese. The way the translater pads everything out and is very polite, contrasted by the blunt director. Possible for an exchange student, yes, but an average high school student, no way! Not unless it was in their textbook and they learned it off by heart haha
@ggboy01 I dunno, I know loads of Japanese people whose english is good enough to actually convey at least some information. More than "turn and look into the camera" anyway. She's not being constrained by politeness at all - except when she turns to the director and uses so much keigo that it's just unnecessary. meh
@Xazard Not really that much more. I'll just use the first thing he says as an example.
"And then on the table there's Suntory Whiskey. Understand? Intensely but softly, look at the camera. Also, kind. Like you're meeting an old friend. Say it like that, please. Give them a 'cheers, Suntory Time.'"
It's a bit of a rough translation, and I think a few things in there are mistranslated, but that's the gist of it.
