Keep it real; the Gouch has the better bass skills, but overall, I love Joel Smith. I remember back in the day him killin the bass and drums! Finger lickin good!
wats a gud slap and pop bass. along with a nice groove sound to it when i do chording? do i have to have to separate basses or can i get one that has a mixture of both? rite now i have an ibanez sr505. anyone can help me out?
@PimpMyMPC True true! In fact, he's one of the 4 pillars of contemporary gospel drums in terms of influence: in no particular order 1) Joel Smith 2) Jefflo Davis 3) Dana Davis 4) Gerald Heyward...of course there are others but these four are widely recognized as four of the most influential especially in terms of the way gospel drummers play nowadays. Pretty sick especially considering that it's hard to find any vids of Joel on drums. But the song "Oh, Happy Day" is Joel on drums @ about 12.
i went to berkeley high with joel and he was killing back then in the music room, when he wasn't on tour, and the baddest bassist and drummer at a school that turns out many great musicians and was stocked at that time.
he was a mature, mellow and generous dude even in those days, and the small ways he was generous and gracious to me, a novice bass player at the time, have stuck with me all these years...
what a great musician and person.
i'm so happy to see him so accomplished and appreciated!
I'm speechless. Your reputation has always been one of positivity for many years, but now actually seeing some of your clips here... man. Why aint we met yet?- we know too many of the same peeps! I'm humbled, my friend.
Even if I didn't know who Joel was, I would have to give him mad luv just based on the monster bass players who have posted comments on this clip. Jackie, Sharay, Justin and of course Andrew. You all are some of the best in the business. God bless you all.
Man!! Mr Joel you are amazing on that bass. When I look at other videos Its not enough when all you see is fast picking, slapping and tapping, so what! I love hearing funk grooves, thumming and chords. Playing and making music with that bass is what its all about. Thank GOD for great musicians like you.
This is the guy I wanted to be like when I started learning to play!!! I had the pleasure of hanging out with him for a week of rehearsals and I haven't been the same since...Learned sooooo much just by watching..never asked him one question the whole time!! great spirit, humble brother! This video is not even close to what he can really do on bass! Those who know Joel know exactly what I'm talking about. Thanks for posting this clip!

Primus? Comparing Les Claypool to Joel Smith is like comparing a volkswagon bug to a porsche.

So under-rated, yet so undisputed...Joel is why I can groove but most importantly why I can even play drums & bass.
