Of course they'd an open flea market and play banjo music. I love in Texas. I know I have an accent. But we aren't hillbillies without technology and etc.
I am a teen from KY, and love the way we talk, live, act, dress, etc.I don't particularly like stereotypes, 'cause hey, I wear A&F and don't live on a farm, but we will always have them. I <3 being around people that love you for you.But even people that are about 20 minutes north from me, (I live in NKY) Will ask me if I'm from SKY.I just love it here. But I just wanted ppl to know,we have electricity and cars and tv and trends and malls.. People from OH will even look at me like I'm stupid...
Oh dear lord.. They would show footage from the flea market. And btw... I grew up in eastern KY and have no problem articulating the difference between my regional dialect and Standard American. SMH @ the media's representation of Appalachia once again. Of course, the film looks a little dated, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, but still...
I'm from Southern Indiana ('bout 5 minutes north of KY) and joined the military a couple years ago. I traveled around a little before hand, too. And still, to this day, everyone mistakes me as being from Texas. But, it seems that everyone in South IN has that problem, but not IL or OH.
The Texas stuff is so true to this day. All of my family is from east Texas and they sound EXACTLY like that, and they will sit and talk forever. And it's only one road up there and they will stop there trucks and talk about any and everything. Ugh. This is so relevant.
I'm from Cincinnati which is right on the border between Ohio and Kentucky. I've heard a lot of these accents. In the cities everyone talks like the Ohioans. You have to go out into the country to hear that Kentucky accent. Never been to Texas.
@wholtone I go to Cincy all the time. But I'm really close to florence. (Ever been there?) But true. So wierd how goin across that bridge and within twenty minutes you hear completeley different ways of talkin. Similar, but different.
@xjustin523x I grew up in Kentucky and I know of people there that still don't have electricity and haven't been outside of maybe twenty miles of their house/farmland.
I'm from Kentucky, and I love our accent. My family is from all corners of the state, as well as Ohio, so my personal accent has sort of neutralized over the years, unfortunately.
@FlamingSpidermonkeys I hear you. I've lived in Indiana, Illinois, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and now Kentucky. My accent is a mess. No wonder my Kentucky native husband can't understand half of what I say! We speak at different speeds, and even use different words for the same things!
I am from Eastern Kentucky as well. I am very proud of my accent. It hurts my feelings when people do not appreciate other people's speech simply because it is not "standard." Who wants a world where everyone talks the exact same way? That would be boring!
Although people always make fun of my accent because I pronounce my a's very nasal-y. Whenever I visit Pittsburgh, they find it so entertaining whenever I say "bagel" or "airplane".
I'm from kentucky, I don't really notice when people around me talk like the people in these videos, but I've been told I don't talk like that, its weird because there are a few words that I say that will come out with that accent but everything else I say doesn't.
I'm from Eastern Kentucky, and I see and meet people every day that are ashamed of their accent. I don't see why. I'm PROUD of the way I talk. It's the way I speak, the way my father speaks, the way HIS father spoke, and so on. It's a history that no one needs to deny, and instead needs to embrace. It's a rich culture, full of exciting things. I just wish everyone felt this way.
I'm from Illinois, and Ive started noticing we tend to talk with a "smile" to our speech. Everything's nasally. I love the texas accent so much. Thanks for this awesome video, perfect reference!!!
Only the Southern part of Kentucky sounds like that. The northern half talks pretty much like i do if you check on any of my videos. (its a bit different because i'm originally from south of Detriot MI) the eastern part sounds different same to the west. and there is a different one too right around in the middle.
I'm from southern Ohio, right across the bridge from kentucky one way and west virginia the other. I love the eastern ky accent, I had a boyfriend from Inez in high school. All things appalachian are close to my heart. To be honest, to me ohio accents sound similar to 1950ish american dream type accents like you'd see in movies and commercials.
There is a Tx accent. Go to the country. You'll hear that drawl'. But, so many non natives are flocking in that it's it's practically nonexistent in major areas. Houstonians/folks in Corpus used to have some RIDICULOUS drawls, when I last visited. Very 'suth'un bellish' way of phrasing things...as if they came straight out of GA. I didn't realize that I had mine until I went elsewhere. I don't sound like a hick - but, everyone thought my little way of phrasing things was cute.
there is no TEXAN ACCENT. texas is way too big to have one accent. i live in houston, and i guarantee no one talks like that with a 40 mile radius. i will post a video on how i talk. you would be surprised on how typical american i sound. look out for the video soon
It's funny. My uncle was born, raised, and has lived in Toledo, Ohio his whole life and he sounds like he's a native of New Orleans, LA. I myself am from Texas, born and raised, and I don't sound anywhere near what people would consider a southern accent. My sister and I both sound like we could be from California.
I'm from Southern Ohio, and as the man said in the video at 4:00, we're basic American and have no accent, at least not an outrageous one.. It's only people from strong accented states like kentucky, texas, illinois, and new york, that say we have an accent. but really it's just "lack of the accent you're use to hearing". If having an accent is insisted, i'd say ours is bland and monotone.
Then my family went to Wisconson. And then Iowa (where I am now).
To sum it up, I have a bastardized Midwest/Texan accent, that is spoken rapid fire Wisconsin style. But I have a heavy southern accent when I am either,
in the south for a while,
or pissed off.
The disadvantages of living in many states during your toddler years. XD
My family is from the Cincinnati area and the old timers call it Cincinnata. I lived in Columbus for a few years and the accent is totally different sounding, 100 miles north.
We all have diffrent accents and we dont even now it, i went up to east texas and they talked kinda diffrent from west texas. lol i went to New York thats a diffrent story . ha ha went England for a scholarship at a borading skool lets just say i was the loner from america ha ha i thought i spoke normal but guess i dont.
Lol, I was born in Texas , raises in California and now spend my teen years in Michigan. So my speak is odd. Lol. I say " like" allot cuz of California, " eh" cuz of the Canadians that live Michigan and sometimes I'll randomly start talking like a Texan. Lol . I may move back to Texas so god knows how I'll be then. Lol
I'm from north Texas and when I herd the Texas accent it was pretty damn normal to me XD I'm proud to have ma Texan accent ,when I go out to other states it's pretty darn weird how they talk XD but I still love it :)
@AmberKatonic Be proud of your accent. I'm from California and we have the most boring accent in the world. Accents from the South have personality and spunk. If you came to California, people would dig your accent.
@EndlessChris Kind of true. I'm from Kentucky and I currently live in LA. Most people look at like I'm COMPLETELY uneducated, and a total hillbilly. Nor can most people really understand me well enough to carry on a conversation, without having to repeat several times and/or describing what I'm talking about. First time I said something was in the boot of a car, I got laughed at. You get use to it well enough though, and there are SOME people that do dig the accent, too.
I'm from Indiana. My mom is from Texas, but doesn't really have the accent but my Grandma and aunts have very thick accents and I love them. What they say about us telling stories for hours is very true.
Accents generally fade in the cities, but I really like the rural Texan accent. There's a guy who does a fishin' and huntin' radio show here in Austin. He commutes from, I think, Lampasas, and he brings his accent with him. It's so cool to listen to.
Wtheck?! I've lived in Texas my whole life and I don't have an accent and I have friends from both Kentucky and Ohio and they don't have accents either. That's all just stereotypes. :P
Ain't no wonder thet ah feel lahwst ayoowtsahda suthun vuginyuh. Its mowah then jest the werds. Hit's the knowin wut people means atween wut thay a-sayin. Unnastayan?
Okay, the KY part is a complete stereotype. In Louisville, it's not like that whatsoever....necessarily. But Ohio people honestly do not have a true identifiable accent. In chicago, they do...New York, of course, the south without a doubt, but Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, not really.
I live in London, England and I really want to live in the states one day! I know all accents are different, but the general southern accent and dialect just sounds so beautiful, wholesome and friendly! I would love to move to somewhere like Texas :) But I love all of America! xx
@kerryymcgowann The Texan accent is definitely different across the state. Texas is huge. For instance, I live in East Texas and would say that we have the strongest Texan accent. If you go into Dallas, Houston, or Austin, you may notice that they just don't sound like we do. And if you go out west, there are quite a few Hispanic people, so you'll get quite a few of those.
To get of what you'd think the real south is, though, you can't go to a city because itll be the same as the rest of cities everywhere, so the rural south would be good.
I live in Florida, btw, and have gone to north carolina and georgia multiple times though :p
@kerryymcgowann the south has a pretty bad image but in a lot of southern states the people really are as friendly as they sound.. they'll treat you like family
@lmbarak ...lol so true and people from West Ohio have the straight bland accent. My accent (West Ohio) is the same as in the Kansas City, Kansas area.
@joncmaxwell Heh. We're "basic American" as the guy in the video said. Makes us a lot more versatile when it comes to impersonating other accents though. ^_^
XD I lol'd @ the 2 trucks it's so true. I thought it was normal lol I also didn't know how straight forward we are like we see some one and don't think twice to say "hey that's wrong" or something
That part about the two trucks parked next to each other on the road while talking to one another is completely true. I couldn't help but laugh when hearing that guy explain the scenario
@99cacahuate Just find an Ex-patriot American- we will always revert to a neutral tounge of sorts like the Radio announcer at the beginning of the video. But when we go back home to visit will temporaraly revert slightly (I live in Hobart Tasmania Australia but originally from North Central Texas.
I've always thought these Appalachian accents and ways of speech among the most beautiful, courteous and noble of all English speakers. Much British English sounds impoverished in comparison. Thank you.
texas accents are different :P depends in which part you live in :P west texas is probaly the most noticable :] i am from east i ain't go an accent or i don't think i do
ive noticed that peoples accents are slowly disappearing due to communication tech. advancements. im from texas, and i have friends from all over the world, and all of them say i dont have an "accent", anymore i think its just morphing into an "american" accent
Nice... Everywhere across the USA, Canada and Britain there's so many different accents. Awesome! I like the Texas accent though, when tourists from the USA come up it lightens up my day, haha. It just sounds down to earth to me.
Do you talk like Elly May from the Beverly Hillbillies or is that an exaggeration ?
I thought she just did the accent for the show. Then one day I saw her speaking on a talk show and was surprised to see that was the way she usually spoke.
I live in Michigan, and Ohio accents still sound funny. of course, as a Michigander, it's common for people here to be able to identify Ohio accents. We need to find as much stuff as we can to fuel our ever living rivalry. :D
hey im from scotland and i love you americans, dunno what it is but you guys just seem so open and friendly, would like to come live in the USA some day
@ImEuanAndIGotsSkeelz I think you'd be very suprised at the amount of scots and irish culture in Kentucky. It would be a great place to start off a U.S. visit.
@ImEuanAndIGotsSkeelz Met a couple of Scots while I was in the Navy and I'd say that door swings both ways, Good stuff that Single Malt too! I live in Australia but originally from Texas.
@ImEuanAndIGotsSkeelz well honestly one of my favorite accents is a Scottish one... u guys crack me up!!! and i also hear that Scotland is a beautiful place to see!!! Maybe we could swap places sometime!!
@ImEuanAndIGotsSkeelz Well then! Thank you! Depending on where you go in America, you will either be correct about "open and friendly" or you will be unpleasantly surprised.
@ImEuanAndIGotsSkeelz Friendliness is hugely dependent on what region of the US you visit. I was born in California, raised in Texas, and have lived in Maryland, New Jersey, Colorado and Oklahoma so I can attest to this. By far, people in the Southern states (Texas and eastward to North Carolina) are the most friendly. The cost of living is cheapest in the South as well but the summers are blisteringly hot. On a side note, I visit Scotland and Ireland every year and love the people there!
lol, im from western kentucky. its not as bad as many people make it sound. i think its just older generations now. young generations still have a accent its just not as bad as it was. lol......
it's actually really cool how different the accents in kentucky are. Eastern Kentucky is twangy and mostly southern Ky. Northern Ky is very smooth with hardly any southern accent and central Ky where im from is smooth but also some southern to it and idk about western Ky never been there :(
@Transyboy7 I think it verys from town to town and city to city. I live in Anderson Co. which is sort of mid way between it all. Our accent has a very bold twang to it, like the Eastern part. Western Ky must be somewhat the same. Good to meet a fellow Kentuckian on here.:D
@RWLSara West Ky is more so midwest, like northern Ky is more so Ohio. They dont really have an accent. But then again im used to my bastarized family mixture of Irish brogue and eastern Ky twang :)
nope, western ky has a southern accent as well. the only part of the state that talks northern is up around covington. western ky doesnt sound to much different than central ky to me.
Being from West Virginia, I can understand every accent I can hear. British is a lil challenging at times, but American dialects are nothing. Maybe you should just listen to the person instead of the language. He/she is the speaker. Pay attention.
I'm from Dallas, Texas and I don't have any accent at all. We don't ride horses to school and wear cowboy hats (though some kids have the whole boots and jeans thing going on). My dad is from Connecticut and my mom is from jersey so that's a huge reason why I don't have a big texan accent. I'm actually italian, but occasionally a bit of a Texan accent may slip out. I love Texas, even if it's hot as shit, but I also love the northeast and visit it every summer and winter.
I'm from southeastern Ohio. I will say this. We speak, for the most part, clearly, however, we have certain words/phrases/accents on words. "Warsh", "yins (you'ns), up'ere (up there), adding prepositions at the end of sentences, "Where's my shirt at?" "..innis = in this, we also tie words together in a string.
I'm from Kentucky, and I don't talk like that. I was born and raised there too. I actually use proper grammar. Sorry, but just because you have an accent does not mean it's an excuse to be uneducated and use improper grammar while speaking.
of corse more stereotypes they always go for kentucky im so tired of it. EVERYONE has and accent to someone else pick on england for a while or france or someone not us we dont say arn i say iron okay and i dnt know what everyone thnx about hillbillys but we are a whole lot more educated then you think. i know that this is about accents and stuff and nuthin to do with hillbillys and crap but GET IT we GET tired of stereo types and leave us alone
@scarshapedstar Not everyone here gave a crap about G.W. Bush either. Of course his accents fake and he's annoying as they come to listen to I hate it. But you shouldn't lose ALL respect man. To many people make texans appear to talk like a bunch of damn hillbillys from the mountains.
@rickygervais1776 traior trash FUCKIN hicks,,, these are the trashthat make us americans look bad in front of the world.. they have the iq of a damn cow!!!!!!!
That old man beginin' on 1:50. What does he meen the suttle culture remains. Is he makin' fun of us. Im from Kentucky and if he is then Im gonna tell his ass off.
I love this stuff. My grandfather was from Kentucky, and I got a full-on dose of this growing up. I've lived all over, though I'm better at telling where someone is from in England than I am telling where they're from here in the States. There's a ton of videos on this topic. Time to study.
Yep, I'm from Eastern Kentucky. I agree with raekelsie xD ..People here really do talk like this. ..It's usually just the middle aged people or older. A few younger people talk like this but I believe it's just because of how strong the accent is around them personally to begin with. xD
Okay I'm a Texan (Dallas) and the younger generations do not sound like the people in this video. Our Texas twang is not anywhere as thick as those people. They are talking to people in small towns or folks from the outskirts of the city, not in the city. I cant speak for people that live further south in the state.
After listening to the guy @ 1:18 I see that Timothy Olyphant does a good Kentucky impression on Justified.
LOL poeple from Ohio do have an accent. They do not have one when they are at home but when they travel elswhere they have one just like people from any other place. Everyone has an accent to someone else.
@tav168 Yeah, but they consider Ohio's spoken accent, minus the farmland areas, the "standard" American-English accent. We try to remove all accents. However, the guy speaking about Ohio has a small amount of accent-- he slurs his "r" if it ends the sentence.
I'd rather have an interesting, hick accent than a bland, boring accent.

In fact, here he is: watch?v=tcbqVgJuFEc

Okay, the KY part is a complete stereotype. In Louisville, it's not like that whatsoever....necessarily. But Ohio people honestly do not have a true identifiable accent. In chicago, they do...New York, of course, the south without a doubt, but Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, not really.

FancyGapClawhammer 7 months ago
@kerryymcgowann The Texan accent is definitely different across the state. Texas is huge. For instance, I live in East Texas and would say that we have the strongest Texan accent. If you go into Dallas, Houston, or Austin, you may notice that they just don't sound like we do. And if you go out west, there are quite a few Hispanic people, so you'll get quite a few of those.
amaddb04 6 months ago
@kerryymcgowann
Thats great ^^
To get of what you'd think the real south is, though, you can't go to a city because itll be the same as the rest of cities everywhere, so the rural south would be good.
I live in Florida, btw, and have gone to north carolina and georgia multiple times though :p

On a side note, I visit Scotland and Ireland every year and love the people there!

it's actually really cool how different the accents in kentucky are. Eastern Kentucky is twangy and mostly southern Ky. Northern Ky is very smooth with hardly any southern accent and central Ky where im from is smooth but also some southern to it and idk about western Ky never been there :(
Transyboy7 1 year ago
@Transyboy7 I think it verys from town to town and city to city. I live in Anderson Co. which is sort of mid way between it all. Our accent has a very bold twang to it, like the Eastern part. Western Ky must be somewhat the same. Good to meet a fellow Kentuckian on here.:D
RWLSara 1 year ago
@RWLSara West Ky is more so midwest, like northern Ky is more so Ohio. They dont really have an accent. But then again im used to my bastarized family mixture of Irish brogue and eastern Ky twang :)

nope, western ky has a southern accent as well. the only part of the state that talks northern is up around covington. western ky doesnt sound to much different than central ky to me.
AgentCarter 1 year ago

BowlSheetFilms 1 year ago
I'm from southeastern Ohio. I will say this. We speak, for the most part, clearly, however, we have certain words/phrases/accents on words. "Warsh", "yins (you'ns), up'ere (up there), adding prepositions at the end of sentences, "Where's my shirt at?" "..innis = in this, we also tie words together in a string.

To add to raekelsie's list (I use yuns and yonder the most out of his/her list)
I live on the state line between ky and wv, so I'm as eastern as you can get.
Here in this tiny town it's:
school is skoo
cool is coo
mayonaise: manaze
"it's just the best!" : "it's the berries" (for muchhh older people; I've picked it up)
coal: co
Not many, but just a few xD
natsgirl9 1 year ago
Yep, I'm from Eastern Kentucky. I agree with raekelsie xD ..People here really do talk like this. ..It's usually just the middle aged people or older. A few younger people talk like this but I believe it's just because of how strong the accent is around them personally to begin with. xD
natsgirl9 1 year ago
Okay I'm a Texan (Dallas) and the younger generations do not sound like the people in this video. Our Texas twang is not anywhere as thick as those people. They are talking to people in small towns or folks from the outskirts of the city, not in the city. I cant speak for people that live further south in the state.
