I think Whittle completely misses the point; the title is inclusive not exclusive, it's saying this was/is a part of British culture and therefore warrants discussion. I'm glad so much was made of this film as I loved it when it came out and I think the 'series' as a whole is really a seminal work in kitchen sink realism.
meadows portrays the real world in any country. We are all effected at root by one issue ...MONEY and how we are manipulated by and for it.....the people doing this are ROTHSCHILDS ...shine a light on these people and change this endless cycle that drains the spirit of every human in any county of any race, eye colour, skin colour, pubic hair colour. Money and its manipulators are causing a world to act in fear and the twisted global and local society at every level is the end product.

@TheHappydead You do know Mark Kermode is as much of a 'posh white guy' as Peter Whittle? He is from a comfortable middle-class background and went to one of the best boys' schools in London. I happen to agree with Kermode (and I'm guessing also yourself) - I think the film is excellent, as was last year's follow up TV series. His reviews are generally spot on. Whittle's idiocy can hardly be attributed to his social class though, and certainly not his race.
I love how Whittle (great name) accuses the film of not liking England and its culture ("it's disgusting"), and then talks about the "miserabilist British thing. It's very self-loathing." Sounds like one persons does not like England. And it ain't Meadows.
Not sure about up north but skinheads down south weren't flourishing & energised like this lot in 1983 when this film is set. Skinheads had their heyday to my memory from 1978-1981 in tandem with all the other youth movements prevalent at the time. By 1983 I remember a general cultural apathy & listlessness amongst youth and a leaning towards non identity and casual dress. Maybe they were a bit behind the times up north but this isn't my memory of 1983 at all.
That was such a nonsense bullshit comment by Whittle 'He struck me as being too small for a 12 or 13 year old!' . Shaun is not a CGI character. He was played by a 12 or 13 year old kid! that's how big he is. He's not a Hobbit in The Lord Of The Rings!!
Nationality is a combination of happenstance and choice. For instance, I was born in Germany (happenstance), but I grew up in England, English is my first language, I have an intense love of English culture. However, up until the age of 18 I had the option to apply for dual citizenship because I was born in Germany. I chose not to pursue that because I simply knew that I'm not German, I'm English. But I probably wouldn't have made that choice if I had happened to live in Germany all my life.
The posh white guy seems to have watched a different film from everyone else. Just proves how little experience he has of working class culture and communities.

Posh guy is a complete twat living in a upper middle class fantasy land and does not want to acknowledge the working class experience that is a reality for the majority of the country.

@socillizt4life Wrong, being born here does not mean you are English. They are British Citizens but they are not English. The black guy is African, and a british citizen but not English. The English are a Nation, not a peice of land, wherever they go they are still English If you were born in india would you call yourself indian? And while you are indeed corect about the licence fee, we still pay for a hell of alot of other things for you, i.e nursing homes, hospitals, universities and so on.
@MrExtremerightwing ........a country is defined by it's culture, that means the day to day experience of that country from childhood to adulthood, if a boy of Pakistani descent grows up in England to say the age of 16 he will of soaked in the culture of his homeland as much as a boy of Anglo Saxon descent so to draw attention to his Pakistani origins makes as much sense as drawing attention to my French origins which date back to William the Conqueror.
@bazeye No, you are mistaking a peice of land with a nation. As i said before the English are a nation, even if my grandfather and father and myself for instance were born in India, i would still be English. Like Wellington, his family had lived in ireland for many generations, but he was still English. The English are not a peice of land nor are they the sum of our culture. We are a nation of people.
@MrExtremerightwing ..........ok there are English people that have foreign origins so a lad whose parents are Pakistani but has been raised from birth in Engalnd is technically racially a Pakistani but culturally an Englishman, which is more important in my opinion, ethnic origin is so trivial its not even worth mentioning as the character of a person is what matters and thats nothing to do with race, its to do with behaviour so you insistence of making racial distinctions is irrelevant.
'too knowing' for a 12/13 year old from someone who hasn't been that age for 20 years. i'm in my twenties, i remember being that age and i remember what everyone else my age was like, and the role didn't feel 'too knowing' to me.
The final comment saying that the Argentinian youth lost their lives and we were enjoying ours is completely wrong. Glossing over the 258 British lives lost and 775 wounded; creating some sort of hierarchy of cultural opportunity is not at all suggested in the film. Smacks, to me, of a complete lack of understanding of the conflicts poignant role as a backdrop for the era.
I kind of get what the posh twats saying though. There is a tendency in our culture to think working class equals 'real' and 'authentic' and middle class equals ephemeral and somehow unreal. They are just different realities. There is also a glorification of working class culture in this country, which basically amounts to a glorification of ignorance and limited horizons. Mark Lamar put it well, "why would anyone want to be a working class hero?"
What the fuck was Peter Whittle doing in the 80's And what a total fucking prick. He was obviously to busy polishing his Dad's cock to know what England was actually like. And the Black guy was good until he was on about Argentina.
wow, that is the poshest guy i have ever seen in my life. wot a faggot. u can just tell he lives his life making sure he is at all times politically correct.
There is a reasons why your just a pompous deluded critic Whittle and not a acclaimed director like Meadows, and this clip summed that up just nicely...
that black guy was so wrong about the falklands bit towards the end of the clip, this is england is a portrayal of northern working class youth culture. Do people really think this was a portrayal of all of england? i think this is england is about the england shane knew growing up.
The posh guy's a twat. The cutbacks grant context as well as giving the death notion of violence breeding violence.... And the destruction of not merely society but the exploitation of the workingclasses.
can only think that the posh tit was asked to come on the show to play a sort of devils advacate and provide a contrasting view so the debate had a more dynamic feel to it but hes talking shitee completely misses the essence of the film can only assume that he has never had the privelege of experience such thorough and genuine compassion in his life what a nob
Although the rating would have no material effect, the censor board was right to be concerned. The film has clearly been picked up and championed by right (they also love the falklands war, so its really like a wet dream), probably treating it as a kind of point-and-laugh movie.
@AngreyDude92 Lemme state right off the bat that im american and live in the states (chicago to be specific).... but this movie was unreal good (we did have skinhead culture here, though it was obviously a rip off of yours... dr martines, skinny suspenders etc.), so basically i acknowledge that i dont really have the background to comment.. that said, putting man in quotes was absolutely perfect!!! awesome, seriously, awesome!!! ;)
Turgoose acting 'too mature'? I've seen 7 year old feral kids running wild on city streets, skinning up on the bus that act well beyond their years. That fella needs to get out more, as he's a lead a truly sheltered life.
My sentiments exactly, Mark Kermode is undoubtedly, one of the finest critics of contemporary cinema. I wish to expound upon his analytical discourse, Kermode is one of the few people who can discern the themes and relevance of a film's subtext or its conceit and judge it in such a professional manner, unlike so many other hackneyed critics.
This is my absolute favourite film, it's so well made, and my mom grew up in this culture, and she loves it too coz it's one of the few films like this that gives yu a real idea of what it's like, also newsnight is something I watch daily and is really good. Please note, I'm 13. Xo
What a surprise, the black man gets the racism question - as if he isn't allowed an opinion on any other aspect of the film.
And what the fuck was that Whittle bloke on about when he was criticising Turgoose; he's 12 years old, he's not Marlon fucking Brando. I thought he was great in this film.
To criticise film reviewers for being "middle class' is ridiculous, did you expect to tune in and see a welder a coal miner and a couple of dockers from Birkenhead casting their critical eyes over the latest film release?
This is England is a frustratingly inaccurate film.If you were to travel back in time to 1983 and interview a bunch of skinheads from the Midlands you wouldn't find a predominantly multi-racial subculture with a fringe National Front element! but quite the opposite.
"frustratingly inaccurate"? Some of us grew up in this period and in this class. Clearly, you didn't. I come from a white working class town and i did have a black mate. He had a hard time from some people but he had plenty of white friends too. The level of authenticity in this film is stunning. If you want to see a bloody awful portrayal of working class britain, try Shameless or any number of popular soaps
@PlazaMoon Excuse me, but i was born in a council house in Leicestershire in 1973 in a very close knit working class community- how dare you prejudge my social class? The comment that it is ridiculous to criticise film reviewers for being middle class is still valid i'm afraid, working class people simply don't make late night cultural review television programmes, perhaps they should, but at present they don't. I grew up knowing skinheads in the midlands thank you very much.
@PlazaMoon I can tell you categorically that the skinhead lads i grew up with were exclusively NF thugs who listened to Oi! bands not Jamaican Ska, Reggae, bluebeat or rocksteady, i can accept that there may have still been "Spirit of 69" non-racist skins around in certain parts of the Midlands who socialized with black kids but i never witnessed it and i don't know anyone else who remembers that, so do i trust my own experience or a film?
@PlazaMoon I will also have you know that i lived in Salford, from 1991 to 1993, as a working class student from Leicestershire in a working class area in the North and I am more than familiar with working class Mancunian and Midlands culture I don't need to get have phoney representations from TV or Film, I am currently employed in non-skilled manual labour in a factory in Loughborough, Is there anything else you'd like to enlighten me about? If so i'd love to hear it, Me duck.
@9wolfy9 Whoa there Wolfy. No need to come running out of your kennel. Alright then, I accept you're a genuine proletariat and I'm sure you're being honest about your own experiences of skinhead culture. But, Shane Meadows is a straight up guy and I believe that in this film he is being completely honest about his experiences with skinhead culture. We all have our own stories to tell and you cannot say that your own is more authentic than anybody else's.
@PlazaMoon O.K fair enough, we all have our own appreciation of the world around us, I'm simply saying I find the plot and premise of the story suspiciously contrived in relation to my own experience, It is as if Meadows has used the skinheads as a neat little device to explore attitudes in wider society, If he had included some of the grotesque casual racism that existed in most average white working class households at that time( my own included), it would have been a far more honest film.
Barring Mark Kermode all the other people who appear on Newsnight Review, including those who aren't on this clip are pretentious private shool educated cunts.
"One found it to have a slightly predictable turn of events, and the youth was a little too mature... I wish Thatcher was still our PM... she would make it better... I don't understand the world anymore... the film was miserablist you see..." If was Kermode I would have stabbed him with my quiff.
As for the Black guy... I bet Argintines would love this film... its the brittish City of God... big up Shane Meadows
in the 80s alot of manual labour got replaced with machines and as england in the 80's is thailand now alot of people were on the street and when you have no job yet that guyr across the street does it would make you ask why has he got the job if he is foreign u wonder why cant he work in his own country and leave the job for you, im not a racist but i could see how the hatred began. i also think its racist for foreigners to come here and treat this place like a dump but thats our foreign policy
Made In Egland is a magnificent film. Its is uncomfortable viewing for some and there is more than enough menace in the racism. Although Dead Mans Shoes is a more satisfying cinema experience, Made In England is probaby a better and more important film.
Yes, I won't try to comment more eloquently than to say that Mr Whittle is definitely a waste of space. tw@t. As the discussion suggests, it may not be a perfect film but it does do a hell of a job of showing all the conflicting forces.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
you posh english prick you know nothing fuck of to the casino at least im a gangster and do the things you do you are a pathetic prick you english posdh arshole
Kermode is a wonderful critic, profoundly analytical of the films themes and relevance. I can't believe that other guy is actually paid to broadcast such stupid views
that posh guy (no idea who he is) is talking out of his ass...i actually said "really?" the same time as kermode- but kermode didnt say "twat" afterwards like i did :P
"Peter Whittle", apparently. You're right though, ever single point he struggles to make is absolute bollocks. You can hear the rest of the room disagreeing with him. :D
its like that guy was just trying to find one little bit of criticism to put him above everyone else and falls on his face...good thing too........ what a twat
I think I meant to say patriotism. Patrionism is a word I have seen used a lot. I just googled it, as I'm sure you did to make sure you were justified in your response to my obviously outwardly offensive post further down the page that has been here for weeks. Thanks for putting me striaght though you are clearly very intelligent. cock.
Turgoose can look back at this as a fantastic achievement - his performance is so much more genuine than the droves of A-list Hollywood stars on multi-million dollar pay cheques.
Don't want to be a parrot, but I must. The man in the black suit just doesn't get it. You are supposed to be shocked at an evidently young child being so offensive etc. He is supposed to mature through the film (or at least thats what I drew from it). Finally coming to a end when he throws the flag in sea, having grown up and abandoning the far right views.
correct. It's amazing how a critic can't understand it. I mean, let's face it, the symbolic implication of the flag being thrown into the sea is not that subtle lol
the guy in the black suit just doesnt get it. this is England was referring to the misjudged patrionism of some of the characters i thought. Steven Graham is a fucking genius, and Meadows, and Thomas Turgoose is one to watch. How can saving private ryan get a 15 and this get an 18??!!??
i always read alot of reviews and watch them, and so much of the time they sound like their having a go for the sake of it trying to sound intelligent, or letting their ego's getting in the way and always have to say something, even if the film was fine, and everytime mark kermode never does that, if its good he will say it, if its bad he will say it, he is very intelligent and you can tell what he is saying is how he feels the others are just like blah blah blah not really making a good point.
This is the weirdest video I've ever seen. I'm stoned. Vah vah vah vah. Come rate my videos, I sing songs of old. Like 1 that was written only a few years ago by David Gilmour. It's called 'On An Island'. It will make you squirm with pity!!! All hail me, all hail I. There's nothing more to say. Bye. (Watch my videos)

can only think that the posh tit was asked to come on the show to play a sort of devils advacate and provide a contrasting view so the debate had a more dynamic feel to it but hes talking shitee completely misses the essence of the film can only assume that he has never had the privelege of experience such thorough and genuine compassion in his life what a nob

token black guy is pathetic. Those young Argentinians didn't have any rights at all, not even the choice to join the military or not. Inane bullshit.
smoochym 1 year ago

I thought he was great in this film.
liljoerox 1 year ago 3
To criticise film reviewers for being "middle class' is ridiculous, did you expect to tune in and see a welder a coal miner and a couple of dockers from Birkenhead casting their critical eyes over the latest film release?
This is England is a frustratingly inaccurate film.If you were to travel back in time to 1983 and interview a bunch of skinheads from the Midlands you wouldn't find a predominantly multi-racial subculture with a fringe National Front element! but quite the opposite.
9wolfy9 1 year ago
"frustratingly inaccurate"? Some of us grew up in this period and in this class. Clearly, you didn't. I come from a white working class town and i did have a black mate. He had a hard time from some people but he had plenty of white friends too. The level of authenticity in this film is stunning. If you want to see a bloody awful portrayal of working class britain, try Shameless or any number of popular soaps
PlazaMoon 1 year ago
@PlazaMoon Excuse me, but i was born in a council house in Leicestershire in 1973 in a very close knit working class community- how dare you prejudge my social class? The comment that it is ridiculous to criticise film reviewers for being middle class is still valid i'm afraid, working class people simply don't make late night cultural review television programmes, perhaps they should, but at present they don't. I grew up knowing skinheads in the midlands thank you very much.
9wolfy9 1 year ago
@PlazaMoon I can tell you categorically that the skinhead lads i grew up with were exclusively NF thugs who listened to Oi! bands not Jamaican Ska, Reggae, bluebeat or rocksteady, i can accept that there may have still been "Spirit of 69" non-racist skins around in certain parts of the Midlands who socialized with black kids but i never witnessed it and i don't know anyone else who remembers that, so do i trust my own experience or a film?
9wolfy9 1 year ago
@PlazaMoon I will also have you know that i lived in Salford, from 1991 to 1993, as a working class student from Leicestershire in a working class area in the North and I am more than familiar with working class Mancunian and Midlands culture I don't need to get have phoney representations from TV or Film, I am currently employed in non-skilled manual labour in a factory in Loughborough, Is there anything else you'd like to enlighten me about? If so i'd love to hear it, Me duck.
9wolfy9 1 year ago
@9wolfy9 Whoa there Wolfy. No need to come running out of your kennel. Alright then, I accept you're a genuine proletariat and I'm sure you're being honest about your own experiences of skinhead culture. But, Shane Meadows is a straight up guy and I believe that in this film he is being completely honest about his experiences with skinhead culture. We all have our own stories to tell and you cannot say that your own is more authentic than anybody else's.
PlazaMoon 1 year ago
@PlazaMoon O.K fair enough, we all have our own appreciation of the world around us, I'm simply saying I find the plot and premise of the story suspiciously contrived in relation to my own experience, It is as if Meadows has used the skinheads as a neat little device to explore attitudes in wider society, If he had included some of the grotesque casual racism that existed in most average white working class households at that time( my own included), it would have been a far more honest film.

Barring Mark Kermode all the other people who appear on Newsnight Review, including those who aren't on this clip are pretentious private shool educated cunts.
Especially that fat bastard John Harris.

As for the Black guy... I bet Argintines would love this film... its the brittish City of God... big up Shane Meadows

in the 80s alot of manual labour got replaced with machines and as england in the 80's is thailand now alot of people were on the street and when you have no job yet that guyr across the street does it would make you ask why has he got the job if he is foreign u wonder why cant he work in his own country and leave the job for you, im not a racist but i could see how the hatred began. i also think its racist for foreigners to come here and treat this place like a dump but thats our foreign policy

totally agree, this hatred will never die out though as foreigners will alwys be in the country :(

Made In Egland is a magnificent film. Its is uncomfortable viewing for some and there is more than enough menace in the racism. Although Dead Mans Shoes is a more satisfying cinema experience, Made In England is probaby a better and more important film.

the best british film is "donkey punch". a horror film dirty blockbuster took off new release shelves after 6 months and labeled it a drama.
it's a highly intelligent take on violence and human nature. the freaky male relationships are established very subtly so it needs a second viewing.

Kermode looks at culture objecively (as a critic should). Whittle on the other hand is an elitist (He loves the idea of quaint England)

Yes, I won't try to comment more eloquently than to say that Mr Whittle is definitely a waste of space. tw@t. As the discussion suggests, it may not be a perfect film but it does do a hell of a job of showing all the conflicting forces.

I think I meant to say patriotism. Patrionism is a word I have seen used a lot. Thanks for putting me striaght though you are clearly very intelligent. cock.

Turgoose can look back at this as a fantastic achievement - his performance is so much more genuine than the droves of A-list Hollywood stars on multi-million dollar pay cheques.
PurushaDesa 2 years ago
Don't want to be a parrot, but I must. The man in the black suit just doesn't get it. You are supposed to be shocked at an evidently young child being so offensive etc. He is supposed to mature through the film (or at least thats what I drew from it). Finally coming to a end when he throws the flag in sea, having grown up and abandoning the far right views.
BertrumPantyshield 2 years ago 2
correct. It's amazing how a critic can't understand it. I mean, let's face it, the symbolic implication of the flag being thrown into the sea is not that subtle lol

So the guy in the black suit thinks that Turgoose's character can't act mature because ... he's short?!!
You dumb fucking prick. The kid looks small and young therefore he has to act like an innocent little cherub?

the guy in the black suit just doesnt get it. this is England was referring to the misjudged patrionism of some of the characters i thought.
