looks like the people are welcoming the tsunami...they just stood there like dog poohs waiting to be washed away. hmmm, maybe they think they can get more fish on their backyard and wait for it.
The place is beautiful, but the atmosphere of religious bigotry in this totalitarian state is revoltingly obnoxious, and you can feel it even from hotel staff, especially male.
It is high time we who would spend our money there, went elsewhere, and show these stone age cretins exactly what we think of their religious intolerance.
How they got away it for so long, I'll never know.
Whoever filmed this took one helluva risk. It shows how rapidly the water rose and flooded inland. Those fish on the deck, wow. What island was this filmed on? Anyone know?
You can can actually see the water retract back and its piling up slowly... The slow but deadly rise.... Not like those in Phuket where it actually rise up high...
oh my, I went to the Maldives in 2002 & asked about their tides which they thought was funny. Because they don't get tides, the edge of the sea remains in the same place. Whereas I'm from Uk overlooking Bristol Channel which moves greatly! Second fastest tide in the world! I had no idea. But I guess those guys know now, right?! To me this would be normal...to them, they must've been terrified. First time they see a tide. Poor guys.
I wonder if the biggest and most destructive wave came after he cut off at the end. Because the sea receded much farther out at the end than it did before the first two waves. He probably realized he needed to stop filming and run like hell.
He is not stupid. I think he and the rest of the people in this video are probably oblivious and unaware of tsunami. They've not experienced such a thing and they probably thought it's cool. But once it has happened to them they'll know how fatal a tsunami is. If there were a Japanese on that beach, trust me. They would have run away because they are aware of tsunami and the signs of a tsunami coming.
This is the first time I see this footage , after almost seven years . I was working washing dishes in an airport cafeteria in Miri when this event happenned . It rained so heavily that day , from early morning till 7 or 8 pm . The rain was so heavy , the surrounding was blanketed by this white mist . I only knew about the tsunami when I went home from my shift at 11 pm that night from our 12 am NIGHTLINE TV3 news . Was the rain got something to do with the tsunamis ? Can anyone explain to me ?
IF THAT AIN'T HEAVEN ON EARTH, I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS. BUT A TSUNAMI WOULD BE A TOTAL BUZZ KILL. AND WHAT THE FUCK. THE ISLANDS R NOT EVEN 2 METERS HIGH AT THE MOST. WELL THAT SUCKS...
People who dont know the Maldives are sinking Islands basically they're would be no where to run, six of the Islands were destroyed and left underwater during that Tsunami :(. they're less than four and a half feet above sea level :(.
@FantasticMrJamie Why are they stupid? There's nowhere to go on these islands! They're flat as pancakes, tiny, there is nowhere to flee. What else is there to do but look? Climbing palm trees is very hard if not impossible if not experienced in it. I would also be looking, after failing climbing trees!
While you may be right I would hardly be standing like a tool filming so I had something great to stick up on Youtube. I would be trying to work out the best chance of survival. Standing on a beach like a jerkoff would never be the best chance of survival.
The photog has more gonads than I would have had He must be an experienced surfer and waterman. That looked like about a 3-6' rise in water level in under 2 mins and then amazingly the sea receded just as fast as it rose. Hope the photog had those fish for dinner!
"Ooh that looks interesting... I think I'll shoot some video of it. Wait, it's getting stronger, maybe I should... nah, I'll keep shooting. Okay, the jetty is submerged now and the surge is up to my waist - maybe I should get going. But then, why stop just when I'm starting to get some really cool shots?" I can only imagine that the Maldives sees a lot of this sort of thing and the camera guy is used to it. Or he just realised that in the Maldives there's no such thing as 'higher ground'.
we use to have some beaches like this in maldives ... its an island covered with water so its like we grew up with it .. so when we see this tsunami like this in the video we are like meh . lol :P
Man, this is such a good video. Shows how the Tsunami can kind of fool you into thinking "it's ok, it's ok, it's ok.... oh my god we are gonna drown!" in just half a minute or so.
@rmazinrsol I am not god, thus I did not kill any of the people during that or any other storm. If you would have bothered to read the rest of my entries you would have seen my statement indicating that I am studying these type of disasters in college. It is part of a emergency management course.
Some people actually go to school (instead of watching youtube or the history channel) to learn about these type of situations in order to prevent future events from occurring. Read before you comment.
Maldies........looks nice, but beware!!!!! The people will curse you, poison you with their bodily products spread on your food and in your drinks!!! They hate Westerners and call them bastards and infidels in their language. Keep away from the Maldives!!!!!!!
Omg wtf ! i dont have words people a tsunami is dangerous if we see in a beach what the sea do in this video we need to run n tell people we need to go is incredible the nature cuz we can see how the sea came back to the sea ja
At 4:40 you can see that it is receding for another big return. Truely scary. The level of the ocean itself rises up, and extends out as far as the eye can see. Unreal.
I was on 'Lohifushi' island at the time. In a hut right on the beach. The force of the water smashed our front door down and smashed the whole room up. As previous posts have said, it wasn't the size of the wave that was the issue, the force of the surge made it difficult to stay on your feet, especially with all the debris (water was about waist deep)
The fear was not knowing how deep it was going to get and having no high ground to run to. The highest part of the island was only 1 metre!
Amazing video! It's crazy how the first wave is actually pushing itself up through the dock as it rushes towards shore. And not to mention the courage of the cameraman standing on the one same spot almost all throughout. Definitely one of the best tsunami videos on here and very educational.
Excellent video. Was interesting to see the needle fish stuck on the pier the first time and none the next. (think the needlefish learned a lesson?) but anyhow there are not many good vids outthere of an active tsunami like this. Great job.
This is a brilliant illustration of the innundation effect of a tsunami. Maybe it would be wise for us to start refferring to tsunamis as not a wave but an innundation or surge.
This film is so stable and detailed, it must rank as a genuine contribution to the study of these phenomena. To say nothing of the courage involved to stand right there...
I am in my fourth week of a natural disasters course in college. Normally I do not look at these type of videos, but now I can not seem to get enough of them. This is cool! How far into the jungle did the water go?
@Sirrom0206 -->> actually it went all the way over. also if you can check the google maps of the maldives you would have a better understanding of what i just said. cox these are just small low lying islands. islands mostly less than one square kilometers..
you have got to be some kind of imbecile to think that this is cool...
you having clearly forgotten-or are just plain stupid to realise that the effects of the tsunami killed 227,898 people (that's near on a quarter of a million) and left god knows how many widows and orphans in its wake.
if your family got caught up in this and suffered the most horrendous time would it still be "cool"...
Ok starchaser28 it's not just about how much water mass is involved, it's also about the fact that with tsunami the sea receeds BEFORE it hits the shore
This should be the youtube video of the year. You must be very brave to have filmed this up close. I would have ran a mile. Thankyou for showing the world what a tsunami is really all about.
Definitely not a storm surge...can be seen by water receding and then rise up again.2nd wave looks stronger....The wave isn't that big cause is quite far from the epicentre so some of the waves got dispersed into the indian ocean...,.Nice vid!!Thumbs up!!
Before a tsunami hits shore the water receeds (pulls back). The larger the tsunami the further the water level drops before it hits. That does not happen with storm surge, the water just rises in a storm surge and then returns to its normal level. At the begining of this video you can see the water level drop and the rocks and dock are exposed. Tsunamis have several causes (underwater landslide, plate shifts, volcanoes, meteors, etc) anything that can displace a lot of water.
Holy effing crap man, that is a fantastic piece of video. You got everything in 2 complete waves. The dock there was great to measure the amount of rise and the fish flapping on the dock was a great touch! This isn't as bad as a lot of places had it by a long shot. I doubt more than 6 feet of rise? But still very scary and very impressive.
the 24/12/04 tsunami is a very unique, where an oceanice tectonice plate is being forced under a continental plate, cause the edge of the continental plate to be be pulled underneath its self being dragged by the sinking oceanic plate. this part of the plate will either flick up (causing a large tsunami like 24/12/04 one) or break off.
only a small portion of this actually flicked up, and when the rest does it will make the 24/12/04 tsunami look like boat wake.

it's definately a tsunami, a storm surge would not cause the water to receed first before rushing back in, like it did in this video. The cameraman is lucky to be alive!
@starchaser28 Yours is a technical post. Can you say it in simpler words for me? I justed guess and thought already that a storm surge just pushes some water inland but for a short time and less water mass, whereas a tsunami pushes an entire front of water for longer and more quantity. But what do you mean "receed first before rushing back in"? Is that just because more quantity of water is involved, so that water is slower rushing back?
well i just so happen to be an expert and they are all very very different! this is a tsunami, to start with you need a river for tidal bores to occur. and theres no storm.
primary school kids could figure this out, its all is in the names.
imagine being in his position before the 2004 tsunami when most people didnt even really know what a tsunami is other then something from films and cartoons.
hes probably just wondering what the hell was going on as noboday had EVER seen something like this before (well not him anyway).
@surfidiot: Yeah this one is definately a tsunami. I somehow managed to post my comment on the wrong video ( Iwas looking at several "big wave" videos).
true, and its so amazing that not EVERYBODy knows exactly what a tsunami is, and an earhquake is always assumed to be followed by one, i dont thing the disaster of the 24/12/04 can really happen again thank god.
stupid answer. do you even know the maldives? there is almost only "beach". These are all small Islands in the indian ocean and the highest point is about 5 meters high. And as already said, it is not the height that makes it dangerous...

Crazy footage!
But I would never wanna live on the Maldives Islands..
They're too small & out in the middle of the ocean. Way too vulnerable. Maldives will be gone in the future.

Ok starchaser28 it's not just about how much water mass is involved, it's also about the fact that with tsunami the sea receeds BEFORE it hits the shore
giammira 1 year ago
daz it really tsuname?
anariasheila 1 year ago
This should be the youtube video of the year. You must be very brave to have filmed this up close. I would have ran a mile. Thankyou for showing the world what a tsunami is really all about.
TheADMUK 1 year ago
Wow. Really nice video but from where you were standing you are very fortunate this was a small tsunami. Really scary stuff.
nickthestick26 1 year ago
Definitely not a storm surge...can be seen by water receding and then rise up again.2nd wave looks stronger....The wave isn't that big cause is quite far from the epicentre so some of the waves got dispersed into the indian ocean...,.Nice vid!!Thumbs up!!
angelfishlover 1 year ago
Before a tsunami hits shore the water receeds (pulls back). The larger the tsunami the further the water level drops before it hits. That does not happen with storm surge, the water just rises in a storm surge and then returns to its normal level. At the begining of this video you can see the water level drop and the rocks and dock are exposed. Tsunamis have several causes (underwater landslide, plate shifts, volcanoes, meteors, etc) anything that can displace a lot of water.

water is so attractive when calm but can destroy everythng whn annoyed,i love water but afraid of it too.
mn628 1 year ago
Holy effing crap man, that is a fantastic piece of video. You got everything in 2 complete waves. The dock there was great to measure the amount of rise and the fish flapping on the dock was a great touch! This isn't as bad as a lot of places had it by a long shot. I doubt more than 6 feet of rise? But still very scary and very impressive.

the 24/12/04 tsunami is a very unique, where an oceanice tectonice plate is being forced under a continental plate, cause the edge of the continental plate to be be pulled underneath its self being dragged by the sinking oceanic plate. this part of the plate will either flick up (causing a large tsunami like 24/12/04 one) or break off.
only a small portion of this actually flicked up, and when the rest does it will make the 24/12/04 tsunami look like boat wake.
heads up people!

it's definately a tsunami, a storm surge would not cause the water to receed first before rushing back in, like it did in this video. The cameraman is lucky to be alive!
starchaser28 1 year ago 17
@starchaser28 Yours is a technical post. Can you say it in simpler words for me? I justed guess and thought already that a storm surge just pushes some water inland but for a short time and less water mass, whereas a tsunami pushes an entire front of water for longer and more quantity. But what do you mean "receed first before rushing back in"? Is that just because more quantity of water is involved, so that water is slower rushing back?
giammira 1 year ago
looks more like storm surge,,but im no expert::)))
typo368 1 year ago
@typo368
Tsunami/storm surge/tidal bore are all very similar. Looks pretty stormy, so it could be a surge.
TheRealRedAce 1 year ago
well i just so happen to be an expert and they are all very very different! this is a tsunami, to start with you need a river for tidal bores to occur. and theres no storm.
primary school kids could figure this out, its all is in the names.
=)
surfidiot 1 year ago
tide maybe ?

I have dreams sometimes that are alot like this video. Scary shit man. That cameraman is a sick sadistic bastard.

Dude, i have never seen anyone as brave as this cameraman. I mean, who the hell was that camera guy any way? Chuck Norris?
thaispix 1 year ago 3
imagine being in his position before the 2004 tsunami when most people didnt even really know what a tsunami is other then something from films and cartoons.
hes probably just wondering what the hell was going on as noboday had EVER seen something like this before (well not him anyway).
he was oblivious to what that actually was.
surfidiot 1 year ago
@surfidiot: Yeah this one is definately a tsunami. I somehow managed to post my comment on the wrong video ( Iwas looking at several "big wave" videos).
TheRealRedAce 1 year ago
true, and its so amazing that not EVERYBODy knows exactly what a tsunami is, and an earhquake is always assumed to be followed by one, i dont thing the disaster of the 24/12/04 can really happen again thank god.

My god, that is scary.. You see all that erosion happening on that little island.. If enough tsunamis occur there will be no island left
storyb23 2 years ago
that was really small, man. i mean, it looked to be, like. 2 feet deep. tops. and there was tonnes of time to get of the beach.
8222PENNY 2 years ago
@8222PENNY
so what? a tsunami can kill plenty of people even if its a "small" wave. its not the height of a tsunami that makes it dangerous.
evrgrnn5280 2 years ago
@8222PENNY
stupid answer. do you even know the maldives? there is almost only "beach". These are all small Islands in the indian ocean and the highest point is about 5 meters high. And as already said, it is not the height that makes it dangerous...
Swissmade1985 1 year ago
So many people lost their lives in little waves? Ppl need to learn how to swim.
