So much emphasis on the "Miracle at Dunkirk" clouds the bigger picture. 350,000 troops was huge number at the time, but considering the Soviets and USA each put about 14 MILLION men in uniform puts the manpower numbers into some perspective. Also, the British abandoned all their armor and artillery. Royal Navy and Air Force would have prevented Hitler from crossing the channel. He was already looking East, figuring the British would sue for peace if Soviets capitulated. Intersting stuff...
however, it WAS a successful withdrawal by the english.
hitler lost his enire war because of his decision to stop the german armorered divisions before Dünkirchen because he felt he had been left out by his generals' decision to move forward which he hadn't approved of.
