  • EPIC

  • I own a jazz bass and this is definitely a jazz bass. It sounds nothing like a ricky

  • all i see in the comments is Cliff, Geddy, and Steve are the bass gods.... what about my man Geezer Butler? Cant he get a little love? lol

  • @Charbyno57 What about Chris Squire. Just listen to Roundabout, Heart of the Sunrise and tell me if Yes does not have an amazing bass player ;).

  • @Charbyno57 Course he can!

  • I wish they would do this for La Villa Strangiato

  • Excellent. Never knew some of the bass parts where double-tracked. And he dropped in for some of the runs. Awesome bass sound. Off to practice now.

  • This sounds like the jazz bass

  • This bass player is an alien lol....Cliff Burton is more my stil ....

  • Geddy is always richenbacher

  • @djcygnusx1 *Rickenbacker and nay only on most songs up to moving pictures, then only a few on signals then never again sadly. this song in particular on a jazzy if you couldn't tell from the comments though

  • fucking epic

  • cliff burton-anastesia(pulling teeth) is the best bass solo

  • @Angheluta18 *Anesthesia

  • how did you isolate the bass line?

  • @Gonzaaaga he found bass master track on web

  • i think he is using the rickenbeker and like flanger efect.........

  • @MegaLucius69 No, I'm pretty sure he recorded this on the jazz bass.

  • 30 years I've been playing this song...or should I say "learning" this song, so many little bits and pieces that are just overlooked / unheard when you dissect this song off the album - and you can pull the iso'd tracks off the Rock Band release.

Jackwagons that are claiming this isn't him, whatever. Go really listen to the song. And even if you still think that isn't him, you have to give mad props to a seriously a badass player. But as a Doctor of Geddyiatry I can confirm it is him.

  • nice double track. sounds like clean in one channel and distorted in the other

  • lol@one guy saying geddys lines are not hard to play=))roflmmfao!

  • super-cool!

  • Should I start bowing down now?

  • 0:49 is when its gets retarded...

  • Double tracked bass? Nice!

  • This is awesome!!!

  • 12 dislikes???

  • yo soy bajista y se quien es mejor que quien. lo digo por que nosotros los bajistas entendemos al igual que los guitarristas

  • This is Geddy playing the bass. It's raw bass along with backing tracks for the solo's. You guys need to learn how music is made in a studio.

    Amazing bass player.

  • You guys must know nothing about studio recording. Nobody does it all in one take. The point is to get the best sound possible.

  • @Ignore14 Exactly. I'm a metal musician, and I record, and i know that you can't do a song all in one take. My songs always sound like they've been done in one take when they are done, but it takes me several attempts to get one certain part recorded sometimes.

  • interesting that some of this is double tracked... ive double tracked and even quad tracked distorted rhythm guitars but bass ive always done a center panned track...

  • I beleive it is Geddy. Anyone who has ever been in a recording studio knows that Bass without drums, guitar, Etc.. never sounds great.

I owned 2 Rickenbacker 4001 Bass's in the late 70's. Both were modified with a Badass bridge and Schaller tuning pegs just like Geddy's. The soud of a Rick is very distinct and if you ever played one Modified or not you know this recording is a Rickenbacker 4001. Geddy is the best and always will be!!!

  • Anyone losing respect for Geddy needs to listen and watch live. Recording studio techniques are often suggested by the producer and it don't at all mean the musician can't play. I've seen Geddy play on many occassion. And I am a bass player and further, I have worked for many famous and popular bands. I have been involved in the music scene since the 70's and I know Geddy is one of the best ever. Many great (and famous) bass players agree! with me.

  • Don't forget. Geddy also uses stereo output on the Ric and he can (and does) get two seperate tones at once. Even live.

  • This makes me lose respect for geddy. listen to the ending line.. there's two parts, which means he was bs'ing both times lol.

  • @MrIcecreamcat ... Lose respect for Geddy Lee ? Really ? Ugh...

  • This is very nice. Wish all the songs were available in this format. Makes it much simpler for amateur musicians to learn the tracks.

  • 12 reasons to educate your son propperly.

  • 12 reasons to use condom.

  • All the arguing over this is funny. I'm pretty sure Geddy used his Jazz bass for this song. He used his Jazz on some songs and his Rick on others. He was still using his Rick live during this era though. It sounds like some parts of the song are doubled and/or use a chorus pedal. And what is the problem with the punched in bass fills? Is Geddy the first person to ever have done that? I imagine he did that because he wanted the fills to have that chorus effect. Also, this is definitely not fake.

  • the day i can play that then ill feel that im finally a bassist

  • @ragnaroksama same , i can play it (ive only been playing bass for about 9 months now) but i can only play it slowly

  • @Skilletrocks1234 its on 0:48 that gets tricky i cant even imagine the rest (and solo and stuff) but this is rlly sketchy and artistic, lotta skill combined, i think. so it think it would definitly be a song that certify me as in like "hey he can play bass" xD i only read tabs i never had lessons or anything so basicly if u can play that that means u know the skill how to...play bunch of other stuff =D

  • @ragnaroksama i know what you mean, but if you spend the time in learning a song thats above (but not too high) your skill level then other songs seam a lot easier. I personally have had 3 of these so called

"breakthroughs" (For Whom The Bell Tolls, Tom Sawyer and Hysteria)

  • @Skilletrocks1234 oh yeaah ! that actualy makes sense. u know in the beginning there was some stuff it was kind of impossible to play and as i learned some other random songs (without knowing it was harder) when i came back to the songs i started playing, it was much easier xD

  • SLAPPIN DA BASS!

  • This is from rock band. It is geddy, some parts are doubled. This is a Jazz bass. Period. The solos are punched in.

  • This is from rock band. It is geddy, some parts are doubled. This is a Jazz bass. Period.

  • Also people saying this is a 'bad cover' are insulting geddy.

  • This is definately Geddy. He got this out of guitar hero or rockband, can't remember which one has YYZ. The multitracks of the whole of Moving Pictures are on the internet. Also, it sound excactly like the studio version.

  • i learned th begign of this song and felt proud....then i hear bass only and now im disapointed

  • i think its stupid how the solos are from the actual song and not really being played, if your doing a bass only track get the whole song

  • @zach32100 What are you talking about?

  • Comment removed

  • @ejl1000 all three of them r bass god man haha

  • @ejl1000 john entwistle

  • @ejl1000 Steve has stated before Geddy was actually an influence on his playing. Go figure, they both finger shred like beasts.

  • @ejl1000 they are geddy lee is just one of them as well.

  • @ejl1000 Geddy Lee, Steve Harris, and Cliff are all bass gods.

  • Comments are back open!

  • @dxbrbnkhd who cares about the negative comments? If you cant just enjoy the utter amazement that is Geddy Lee (well, all of Rush for that matter) then you shouldn't be watching anyway.

This iso bass track blew my mind. I've seen Rush live. How Geddy can play such amazing bass lines, sing, and play the keys with his feet AT THE SAME TIME is inhuman. Wow is all I can say.

  • I've had it with the negative, bad comments.

    THIS IS NOT FAKE!!!

I'm blocking comments for now, I might re-open them later.

  • @dxbrbnkhd Yea man screw those guys. I know this is Geddy Playing. I guess for his bass solos in those breaks he recorded them on seperate tracks right? Thats what everyone does in the studio as far as I know. It's alot cleaner.

  • Do I really have to start monitoring the comments on this video? Or should I block them?

IT IS NOT FAKE!!!! THIS IS THE REAL THING!!!

    THIS IS GEDDY!!!!

  • it is, its called punching in parts.

He can record one bit and switch tones, basses, whatever to nail a part.

  • @bassist13 lol, i know its fucking retarded, but when u say nail a part, it reminds of Rush's Drummer xDDD

  • Geddy's Rickenbacker had stereo outputs, meaning that he could split his bass signal and run it into 2 separate amps. Maybe one distorted, and one clean?

Dunno, just thought I'd throw it out there.

    Oh, and look up Ric-O-Sound

  • its not recorded with a Rickenbacker

  • YYZ is his Jazz

  • Thanks for confirming. I suspected as such because with the Rickenbacker it's HARD to get harmonics!!!

  • Yeah no kiddin eh! Due to the bridge pickups location I think. I've got the Ged Sig and the Tony Franklin and the harmonics come out so much easier on those two appose to my Rick.

  • Dude I have a Rickenbacker 4001 and I'm telling you, it's fucking hard to get harmonics in it because it's such a softie (passive pickups and the like). I have strong convictions to believe that Geddy used his Jazz bass on AT LEAST the songs "YYZ" and "Different Strings".

This actually kinda sucks because I don't have a Jazz Bass and I would like to play all their songs with my rick. :(

  • Rickenbacker a softie? Rickenbackers are some of the loudest passive basses there are.

If your Rick is quiet... there's probably something wrong with it.

  • Have you ever played a Rick 4001 and tried to get harmonics on, say, the 5th or 4th frets? It's a LOT harder than on any Fender (I own a fender) or Warwick (I own one too)...

  • Sure have. Not hard at all. Don't know how easy it is on a Fender. Don't own one, haven't cared for any of the (many) I've tried enough to buy them (basses aren't cheap).

  • And when I said "soft"... Well, when I first tried my RIck with my SansAmp bass driver DI distortion box, I had to set the drive to almost the maximum to get some clear dist coming out. On other basses, they are a lot more receptive and it sounds a LOT more distorted. Hope you understand what I meant with "soft" now? Not sure if it has anything to do with the harmonics thing I said above, maybe they're 2 different characteristics of the Rick.

  • Really? That's odd, because Rickenbackers usually don't need much gain/drive to get really snarly.

  • Comment removed

  • dude this isnt him playing

  • This is a master track!!! I don't even play bass or own one. I play drums and only drums and I'm no Lars Ulrich either.

  • yea i know i was commenting on what someone else said

  • Geddy probably went back and rerecorded the fills to make them perfect. You can hear the difference in tone in the record. If Geddy isn't playing, the player got the exact tone. I think it is Geddy.

  • you can CLEARLY hear 2 basses (when the main riff kicks in)

  • No, one bass, and only one bass. Trust me on that....

  • come on, at 0:49 you can hear 2 distinctive bass tracks!

  • It sounds like it might actually be at parts. Maybe a clean line and a slightly distorted line played together? They are definantly seperate tracks for the solos though.

  • ... you can?

  • I think you're hearing the guitar. In addition to several other effects, I think that Mr. Lifeson is using a guitar effect with some sort of octivating sound on it. As such, he has a lower then normal guitar tone on that section.

I think what happened is that the program they used to rip the bass out of the final CD track had a difficult time pulling out only the bass since the guitar has a relatively low tone.

  • @afffred sounds like a bass effect to me, maybe chorus.

  • fucking tasty

  • This is straight TASTY son!

  • Could you PLEASE post a tool bass track like Aenima or The Pot?

  • That some juicy bassline Geddy's got in this song! :D

  • r u sure....

    where does geddy say that...

  • i am sure. He said that in some interview(can't rememeber what iterview it was :D). But Rickenbacker doesn't sound like that. It sounds more like a "bass guitar" than "bass"(listen red barchetta) . Jazz bass speaks with a warbly growl sound .

  • two things...

ged is using his ric on this song. NOT his jazz bass.

how do you isolate just the bass or just the guitar for a song. is there a software

  • I use Rock Band. Edit the files and then convert them to a more "internet-friendly" format.

  • Comment removed

  • this isn't rickenbacker. Geddy said he used jazz bass on this song becouse jazz's neck is faster than rick's neck.

  • @Rago2112 YYZ was the jazz

  • @musicfan101ful in concert yeah, on recording, no. he uses the rick for recording.

  • @MegaScreamingbanshee he started using the jazz bass alot more near the end of the 70s, he even said in an interview, tom sawyer is a good example of the jazz bass, red barchetta is the ric

  • nope sounds way more like a rickenbacker

  • Comment removed

  • I knew it thanks for clearing that up :)

  • I'm pretty sure that's a jazz bass

  • he used the ric for this album and tour

  • It is a Jazz Bass...

  • no, on moving pictures I think it was a Rick

  • A lot of people do think it was a Rickenbacker, but after Hemispheres he used Fender Jazz basses for Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures and Signals. The information is widely available on Wikipedia, and some of the countless Rush/Geddy Lee interviews you can find on the web.

  • wikipedia is sometimes lies.

he used a rick for a while though

  • I know it is not always accurate mate, but Geddy himself said he starting using his Fender Jazz Bass again when they recorded Moving Pictures, Permanent Waves, and Signals...

  • He said in an interview with "Guitar World" when they did a celebration issue of Moving Pictures, that he DID use the Rick on certain songs on Moving Pictures. Lime Light and Red Barchetta, I believe are the songs he said. Limelight for certain.

  • Thanks for that mate, I just checked out that interview and he does indeed say "Red Barchetta" was the Rick, and thinks "Limelight" was too.

  • Wow! Geddy is good !

  • Sounds "punched in" at 2:15

  • i am flabergasted! geddy is amazinng. . . .a GOD!

  • what epic tone... I'm jealous

  • I've always tried to figure out that last run (at the very end) but was so hard to hear. Hearing it now is even diff 'cause of the effects (or double) on the bass.

  • you can tell the bass solos were recorded seperately

  • I always thought that when I was listening to Moving Pictures a couple of months ago. It sounds so different on record. This is very clearly overdubbed about 3 times. 0:50 is very overdubbed too.

  • Wow! I never noticed that!! At least Geddy can pull off those solos live!

  • True.

I was a bit letdown listening to this, it's got atleast 3 tracks overdubbed and it just spoils it.

  • That's how records are done my friend.

  • So true. I guess though it isn't meant to sound good on its own but a lot better inside a mix with the rest of the band.

  • Totally agree...

  • very nice

  • omg geddy lee is a god!!!

where did you get this my friend???

  • That is awesome!! Geddy rocks!

  • Awesome!!

    Geddy Rules!!

  • Good aul Geddy, fantastic playing.

  • Awesome

  • Lul

  • you got minus sixed becase you didn't use your head

it says bass track, not the whole song

  • First of all this song is an instrumental, there are no vocals. Second, it says BASS TRACK you fuckin retard

  • i can't believe you took it seriously

  • Your stupidity is a very serious issue

  • i was joking you fucking retard

  • It would help if your joke wasn't fucking stupid.

  • you take Rush way too seriously.

  • No, you just don't know how to refrain from being a dumb ass on the internet.

  • no u

  • no u

  • ha ha ha ha ha thats funny
