I've heard her (recorded and live) performances of Carmen, Traviata or Rusalka and she is incredible.

I think the comparison between vocalists comes down to whether or not you prefer the operatic style to the more poppy style of Annette. I could see how Tarja's voice would kind of grate on people who aren't accustomed to operatic vocals. That's not to say that I don't like her vocals, 'cause I do, it's just that her style is kind of an acquired taste for a lot of people, and Annette has a more commercial-like, accessible voice (not saying that it's better or not, just different)

She caters to more of the young set of music fans who don't care too much about talent, rather they are enamoured with what's popular at the moment. That's pop music for you I guess. :)

People said the same about Kate Bush and Tori Amos - both of whom have prodigious musical ability... Gaga just makes music with a different sound. I think people just have different preferences that don't allow them to care about certain types of music, regardless of how "technically good" they might be...
