In addition to all these great comments I need to add that this song was written by Steve Earle, who has battled all manner of addictions and imprisonment here on earth.
To my hearing the lyrics are exceedingly humble. The title and lyric "God Is God" echoes the maker's own statement "I AM."
Why make a song about God, I mean there are LOTS of songs about God and the joy from the Love of God, and all the rest but they are sung in churches, not in pop concerts.
There is but the possibility that Earle (which I like and esteem), wrote this song in a "dark hour" to get support and self relief.
Apart from this, Joan Baez is the best female singer songwriter in the world.
@ezekielwahwah I think they're just singing out the truth as they understand and experience it, It's not about religion or church practices. The truth is what is, in church or out.

Very righteous and profoud observation there.
This song also gave me a wrong sensation.
