Good thing is you sound like you didn't over-cam the motor.
FEs with hydraulics will take a lot of cam....but it basically kills the power-brake vacuum without doing much else......if you're buzzing it much above 6 you're just kidding yourself.
9R02R132xxx owner.......factory CJ pan with baffle and windage tray is perfectly fine....and I've killed numerous C-5s, Porsches and even an F-355.
Put a pair of 620# springs up front and make the rest of the car new...add a SSB brake package to the front, urethane everything and it'll handle just fine, if you can drive.
if you plan to buzz the motor then add extra capacity oil pan with about 2 additional quart volume and a high volume oil pump so the oiling will save its life. those engines need it if you buzz it much. I used to race them and that is vital. And if you do that then one last thing is a oil limiting jet in the rocker arm supply so the rocker lids dont fill up with oil and starve the oil pan. I used to use carb jets yet canot recall what size. ask around some and ppl will know what to use best
If you've got roller rockers a .060 jet will work well to limit oil flow to the rockers. It will also add a few PSI at idle. If you're not running rollers I would up the size a bit for a little more oil. I second the larger oil pan + windage tray. The cobra pans are real nice (but expensive). Add the windage tray and you can easily run with 6-7 quarts of oil. I personally dont think the high volume pump is necessary. At sustained high rpm you might suck the std. pan dry...
If you're gonna lean on it hard I'd go for the following: cobra pan, windage tray, oil cooler, high volume pump with approx. 7 quarts. Some internal oiling mods like restricting the flow to the rockers will also be a good idea. For everyday street use and occasional burn outs, etc. all that stuff isn't necessary.
@zobcity01 Thanks for your comment. So far everything is working great now, and all the oil leaks , drips and seepage has been taken care of. Love driving it
the big problem with these motors is the oiling system,or should I say lack off a good one,big and narrow bearings have a lot of speed.fix the oiling system and they are great engines.
My fav engine of all time!!!!!

@ceetwarrior Thanks, I spent a long time welding up holes and block sanding the inside of the engine bay, to make it look as nice as possible

@Blago6actual Thanks for input, and I agree with your thoughts on the cam selection

Flaming River has a bolt-in swap for the old steering box and it uses your old fiber coupling if it's still good.

Stock HV pump works fine...get the thicker aftermarket drive shaft.

The oil restricting orifice plugs under the rocker stands are a good idea, too.
I run Erson billet shafts and rockers.

the oil limiting jets will go in the number 3 rocker shaft bolt hole on the side where the oil flows up trough from the heads..

super tough and reliable engine they are. Good torque with the 427 cam rated at 585 lift. Very streetable setup.

what type of cam are you running? Is it hydraulic roller? Sounds great!

starry816 1 year ago
This cam was a hydraulic. It was really not a nice cam, when driving at about 2000 rpm, so we changed to a solid lifter cam
67FEfastback 1 year ago
Are you putting in a six speed or keeping the 4 speed? Or 3 spd auto?
beepandbop 1 year ago
We started with a 4 speed. It now has a 5 speed TKO
67FEfastback 1 year ago
Nice! That sounds hot.
Is this the same platform as the 390 FE?
I heard installing new transmissions were hard for the Ford Edsel.
beepandbop 1 year ago
Yes exterior dimensions are nearly identical between the 428 and 390
also 332 352 are very similar
67FEfastback 1 year ago
Did you have tranny troubles?
Also, is there a final build movie where we can see your finished shelby?
beepandbop 1 year ago
It a tight fit but a hell of a lot of fun.
That's an extremely mild cam for that motor.
Nice Job
n5ifi 1 year ago
Yes it is a very mild cam. We build the 'stnag as a reliable highway cruiser, but it's still quite a handful ;-)

where'd you get valve covers that big for a ford engine?

@ndubb1 They are standard 1968 style cobra lemans valve covers, which have been chrome plated

I won't know for sure, until engine is dynoed.
