Loved it, thanks! Very similar story. We are not Orthodox but Jewish and we came to US from Russia where we celebrated the New Years with ... Christmas tree (long story, everybody was doing it). Never realized it was actually a Christmas tree. So we figured we'll just continue. Me and my friend bought our trees and stopped to buy some tree stands. Guess who parked right next to us - our sponsor rabbi. How could we possibly explain this to him??
Brilliant!!! As a non-practicing Jew (who has even had a gigantic Ham for a Passover feast . . . delicious!) . . . I have to say this is perfect! Bravo!
wonderful! just in case you're open to unsolicited constructive criticism...
concept - excellent
dialogue - excellent
acting - excellent
camera - excellent
editing - not so good. you're dragging in several places, including the opening shot. you could chop 2-3 minutes out of this piece without any story loss, and the viewing experience would be improved.
also - the doorbell song at the end felt too much like score, and i missed the joke until i replayed the last beat.
We watched this wonderful short at the 2010 La Jolla Film Festival and absolutely LOVED it! Kudos to the director, the actors, the editors, the producers and everyone associated with this delightful short. Thank you for an entertaining 7 minutes of pure charm. Signed....two of Mendel's Fans

Exactly like our Christmas this year, 15 people over for Christmas lunch, only 2 were not Jewish :)

BTW at 6: 28 you can see the shadow of the cameraman in Mendel's glasses. :)
