Love this!.. the violin cries, it makes you feel the pain and love he puts in the song<3 I sang this for mothers day it was a tear dropper for all the mothers! :D
By far the best rendition! Sutherland's very individual voice suits the song's nostangic mood like a glove! am i right thinking Moor's on the piano?! wow! thank you for posting this, its been a revelation to me.
@theigorpeople Yes, it is Gerald Moore on the piano accompanying the late great Dame Joan Sutherland. For a comparsion in styles, listen to the same song as performed by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. Both are beautiful.
wow. such amazing, round space she creates in here mouth. strange how she can sound so wonderful and have such a wonderful space with her head tilted weirdly. i can't. glad she can
Wow! Dame Joan did amazingly here, even if in English. There's just this maternal piety that emanates from her voice. OT: Anna Netrebko recently recorded this in the native Czech; not as great as Dame Joan but very well worth a listen.
I believe the accompanist in this video is the great Gerald Moore who played for that most famous of Irish tenors John McCormack late in that singer's career after "Teddy" Schnider who had with him for many years retired. The incomparable Dame Joan Sutherland sings Dvorak's touching "Songs My Mother Taught Me", so beautifully. Thank you for posting it.
Both this Sutherland's early performance and her later one are among the best ever. They are sung quite simply, without many "effects" or sobs, and express emotion in a straightforward, sincere way. And the superbly clean and plaintive tone of her voice help to create the proper atmosphere of this song. Btw, I think Sutherland's mother had just died in the same year (1961). Thanks for uploading this video again (I think it'd been deleted from YouTube)!
where on earth did you manage to find this , i have only ever seen a few of the items in this concert recorded for the BBC in the late fifties(?) fabulous, thanks tomblack
A very young Joan Sutherland. She recorded this song in the late 60´ies when her voice had gotten more authority. This recording is lovely (a better word I can´t find). The latter recording is deeper. Thank you lahire for this interesting clip.
Incredibly beautiful, sung by the greatest voice of the 20th century, IMO.

Only Gerald Moore could "upstage" Joan Sutherland, or any singer he accompanied, for that matter.......

Songs my mother taught me
In the days long vanish'd
Seldom from her eyelids
Were the teardrops banish'd
Now I teach my children
Each melodious measure
oft the tears are flowing
oft they flow from my mem'ry treasure

This is one of my favorite songs. I really love Rosa Ponselle's version best of all.

Very hard to find these songs recorded in Czech (Theler, von Otter in German) where they really sound best... Moore is great as well

May God richly bless you for posting this, and for sharing it with us.
I don't know what I would do without youtube and all of the generosities.
Anyone want to trade Dame Joan stories?
