Ok listen up. he is using the CORRECT way to START learning the buzz roll, or drum roll. I teach this same method to my students and it works. You have to first learn how to make the sticks buzz on the snare head before you can correctly learn the drum roll. You won't learn the drum roll in a few days. It takes a long time to do a perfect roll. If you practice this with each hand every day, you'll be able to do the buzz faster each time and within a year or so you'll have a decent buzz roll.

I keep my thumb over teh stick to kind of force it down for more speed. Then I don't let the stick die on the snare. I just do 2 boucnes and a hit.

When first learning a role you dont tell people to "bounce" the stick. you focus on two clean strokes on each hand and progress into a role.
