  • Hello!

I praise the way you criticize the new generations easy-minded-influenced by wide media distribution: popular critics does not come to the reality most of the times.

Keep the true old spirit alive!

    Cheers

  • I find it kind of ridiculous how people diss this game for the stupidest reasons, too. I fail to see how a minor hack of the original game is any better than a hack of another game. I agree with you on gamers being pretentious and nitpicky these days, too. Nothing wrong with disliking a game, but at least have a good, legitimate reason that doesn't just blindly parrot everyone else first.

  • wow irate gamer got told................

  • sm2 is Amazing!

  • I agree about SMB2. I grew up also knowing that this was the sequel. The important part of this game is that it's fun.

  • Nice video.

How do you record video game consoles?

  • Comment removed

  • Super Mario Advance was the first GBA game I actually owned.

It's still fun to play on either system.

  • What you said about the armchair developers is so true, Multimedia Jay. I've noticed in not only when it comes to games, but also just about any other form of entertainment. Everyone today is an expert. Everyone's an insider. And unfortunately, these spoiled, cynical brats influence a ton of people.

  • fuzzywzhe, get off my channel. You want to pick fights about Emulators and ROMs, go do it somewhere else. There are numerous reasons to still seek the original hardware that both myself and TheGamingGoose agree on, among other retro-gamers out there. Also, you're wrong on the wattage too. These newer retro players can use less power than a laptop loaded with ROMs. Getting an old game or system working is an achievement unto itself, which ROM nuts will never understand.

  • idiot SMB 1 is better then 2

  • It's just his opinion.

  • What he said. :-P Ever heard of an opinion?

  • @rachet197 Super Mario 2 is awesome.

  • Just like you super mario 2 was my favorite game because you can play as toad and the pirincess. I didnt have a snes when i was a kid (because im a kid) but i did have this fore gameboy advance when i was 6 and LOVED it. i would play it with my cousin for hours. (-:

  • Can the Retro Controller be replaced with any other controller? Does it have the same pinout of, say, the SNES 2?

I ask because my friend is INSISTING on buying this machine, and won't listen to me when I tell him to buy a Shuttle-X, install FreeDOS (or Linux), put an NES like paint job on the metal and buy a USB NES controller or 2.

I don't get this obsession with having to deal with a cartridge when an SDCARD will store all 800 of the games. I mean, welcome to this century.

  • I use SNES controllers on mine. I consider using the bundled cartridges a form of hard mode. :D

As far as dealing with cartridges goes, emulators are for wimps and you know it. :o)

  • Hey, the emulator shot is fighting words.

Emulators use less power, they allow you to store your entire library on a device that weights under an ounce, they have additional features like SAVE STATE so you can do away with the moron codes, and you don't have to have to dust a video game collection AND it plays EXACTLY THE SAME as real hardware.

There's absolutely no advantage to using original hardware. In fact, it's the total opposite. Why would you defend that?

  • It's also illegal.

  • Smoking pot is also illegal, so is crossing the street outside of a crosswalk, and it's also illegal to drive 56 MPH in a 55 MPH zone.

Like really, I have to buy some piece of shit hardware from a Chinese company that is making a NES clone after the patent ran out, simply so I can play a game I had as a kid, and I don't want to dig out a cartridge buried somewhere in my parents attick, or in a landfill.

I feel really bad about "breaking the law".

  • I just don't understand why you take offense to someone preferring to play the actual thing rather than own an illegal digital copy.

  • I'm not taking offense. First, it's not an illegal copy unless you don't own the rom itself. Your accusation is first offensive, and second false.

Second the mentality that it's somehow better, it's just also false. It reminds me of "audiophiles" that insist that a vinyl record sounds better than a CD. Do you know why vinyl records sound different? It's because audio engineers need to distort the sound to keep the needle in the groove. It just shows idiocy.

  • It's not if you don't "own the rom". It's if you don't own the cartridge. If you don't own the cartridge, than it is, in fact illegal, and it's IS idiocy if you own the cart to just download it anyway. I never meant to be offensive, nor was I attacking you. I was just saying that emulation is against the law. And it is. But do they truly tamper with the game to make it somehow "look" or "sound" better than it is on the cart? If so, that's something that I did not know. The overhaul is newsto me

  • First, how is owning a rom different than owning the cartridge? You realize that a ROM is a Read Only Memory - it's a CHIP.

Second it's not illegal to run emulators. I can't believe how many morons spout this. Bleem was sued and won against Sony over this issue, about 10 years ago now when they made a PS1 emulator back in 2000.

"Emulation is against the law" OK - now I'm being insulting, you're a moron.

  • Did you by the rom? Just asking.

  • Yes, I did BUY the rom.

What kid didn't own the thing? Of course, the ROM is either sitting in an attic or in a landfill. I've not bothered to find out.

  • As long as you're not trying to sell it for a profit, isn't that how it goes, or how it's supposed to go?

  • Oh give me a break. There is so much retro stuff floating around out there that the only thing I have to say to ROMaholics is: STOP BEING LAZY. :-)

  • yes

  • @fuzzywzhe

I ended up buying oa Retro Duo. Even dug up an old 68cm CRT telly to play it on. Cartriges, including blowing the dust out brings back a sense of nostalgia.

I daresay he sinmply want to be temporarily transported back to his childhood as I do with all meories of the experience intact. What you're suggesting is too problem free, and to me, would detract from the overall experience.

He's right though, I have to replace these controllers. Makes playing Batman kind of interesting.

  • I love SMB2. It was the first NES game i ever played.

  • I never liked mario 2 it never felt like a real mario game to me. I will play it here and there on allstars and try to get into it but that game is just not for me. I will stick with 1 and 3.

  • Some of it has to do with whether someone has any experience playing this game before it became widely known that it was a rehash of Doki Doki Panic. I played and liked this game for a few years before finding out about Doki Doki Panic in the Mario Mania strategy guide that came out shortly after the beginning of the 90s. :-) Even so, Nintendo merchandised this game so darn much in the late 80s that even when we found out it still didn't matter.

  • I completely agree with your view on the generation problem and videogames. I myself am 16, but have a larger collection of NES and N64 games than PS2. The problem with games is that they now follow cookie-cutter builds; ie the mainstream games now are first person shooters like Call of Duty and Gears of War. They also don't have stories anymore. It's just "you're in a war zone, kill everything that moves".

  • eh, you are only 16, you didn't grow up with these or know what it was like. games just got more and more complicated where as these you can just jump in and play them

  • And this is the internet. I have every right until you show me proof to assume that you could be younger than me, especially because you seem to be attempting to PATRONIZE me. Now how on earth do you not just "jump in and play" today's games?

  • I can jump in and play a first person shooter or even World of Warcraft just as easily as I could any games from the Pixel days. It's just that there's enough people out there that can be amused by pretty graphics that game companies keep drowning games in technical features and getting away from the "pick up and play" aspects of gaming.

  • I went to high school over a decade ago with people my age who listened to 60s music. I think once the generation of gamers that grew up on polygons instead of pixels gets past all the cosmetic stuff, it really doesn't matter how old a game is, so long as it's good. Besides, yesterdays console games are today's portable games with how all these older titles have been re-released on portables. :-)

  • Favorite game hands down, bit weird when you consider everytime you play it your playing a 21 year old game

  • Don't ever play chess then. Your head might explode. :-)

Truly, the best games eventually find ways of becoming timeless.

  • Irate Gamer is gay, he never makes sense, and AVGN actually grew up with these games, unlike irate gamer, hes a faggot.

  • I agree Mario 2 ROCKED when I was young. It still one of my favorite Mario games.

  • you don't jump as high with the buttons.

  • I own a Retro Duo, and after a month of using one of the controlers, it stopped working and I had to buy a new one. Needless to say I wasn't very happy with that.

  • Looool Wikipedia----->Irate gamer ? ;)

anyway, good review, fun to watch.

I too do reviews.. but its in dutch...

Got subtitles in my last one though..

  • mario 2 is better then one

  • Shhh..... Be careful. The AVGN crowd might hear you. :)

  • The nerd does it for comedy. the Irate gamer is just an a hole

  • great review man! i liked the spoof review too! I'm grabbing myself a retro duo, its on its way :) ... but don't worry, I have 2 extra SNES controllers. thanks for making the reviews!

  • Ah, the classic sign of an old-school gamer: blaming your mess-ups on the controller. Kidding.

    Good show.

  • You have a good voice..you do any broadcasting?

  • i was just wondering what is your opinion on the retro duo overall

  • It's a pretty decent machine if you don't want to resurrect an old Super Nintendo. I especially like how it plays NES sounds since before the RD there were a lot of Famiclones out there that switched two of the synths and messed up the music in NES games.

  • hey thanks because i am just getting into retro gaming and i dont want to spend my money on both systems and i think ill take your advice and by a regular snes controller

  • Nice review. As a child of the 80s and early 90s I appreciate your take on IRATE gamer and AVGN. They are funny, but the whole mass of followers, including kids that weren't even alive back then making reviews on you tube is getting ridiculous.

  • it doesnt have to be bad just cause its made from doki doki panik

  • Hell yeah, Luigi kicks Peach's ass any day. Also, I agree with what you said about this game being Doki Doki Panic. Doki Doki Panic was still a good game, and they made it even better when they made it into SMB2

  • Also, the "real" SMB2 sucks

  • i like the GBA and SNES SMB2. but they mad the GBA to easy with the hearts and 1_ups all over the game

  • I throughly enjoyed listening to your insight. 5 out 5 all the way.

  • I reckon Irate doensn't hate this game, but reviewed it for the click-thrus h knew he'd get for calling a Mario game crap.

  • Given what he does on YouTube, I'm inclined not to believe anything he says or does. ;)

  • THANK YOU!!!

  • I like Mario Bros 2 100 time better now I'm grown up. But now I can do it, whereas when I was a kid I always got stuck :-P Great game, thanks to Nintendo for bringing it from Doki Doki, otherwise I'd never had played it!

  • The first time I tried playing Mario 1 on the NES I kept running into the first Goomba on World 1-1.

  • And also, I love SMB2 as well. Loved it as a kid, and love it as much now.

  • Nice commentary. I do agree that people's opinions being too influenced these days by internet personalities. I think last week, I was watching ScrewAttack's Video Game Vault on Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage, one of my favorite games for Dreamcast and isn't a well known game at all. ScrewAttack said it sucked, from what it looked like just for laughs or to be like AVGN which annoyed me. If you're interested, Jay, I wrote a blog about it. You can find the link to my blog on my youtube channel.

  • I thought that game looked familiar and then I saw the CGR footage. Yeah, it looks like Screwattack has lost it. The Nerd should strike out on his own if it wasn't for Viacom's involvement in all this.

  • According to Stuttering Craig, ScrewAttack is independent and has no association with Viacom. The I guess whole "Viacom owns ScrewAttack" was just a rumor created by Wikipedia.

  • I thought Viacom owned Gametrailers, which is what the bizarre grandfathering of the AVGN into Big Media gets its roots from.

  • Ah, I see. You are correct. I wasn't aware of Viacom owning Gametrailers. So I guess Craig wasn't telling the whole truth about not being associated with them, since they have a contract with GT. As far as AVGN though, from what I know, he gets paid by ScrewAttack per performance. I'll assume he gets a percentage of the revenue GT pays SA for AVGN's videos. So unless I'm missing anything, Rolfe himself is contracted with ScewAttack, Spike TV, and owns Cinemassacre.

  • Also SMB2 is the shiznit.

  • Jay(If thats your name), I love your voice.
