I am bit surprised that someone can expres dislike about this song, it's the best version of the Parting Glass I've ever heard. It's so full of Irish atmosphere that you can damn near smell the fresh wet grass in the morning dew
waking ned devine was not a good movie. some dumb whore got knocked up by ned and the town took the lottery ticket off hid dead corpse and the fat pig farmer is raising a kid that is not his. movie fucking sucked
Yeah Mates this is nice but the High Kings is the best me thinkss. Anyway does it matter in the scheme of things. It's nice anyway it's easy being a critic when you don't have a note, creativity is a great gift anyway must finish the merlot.
You made me cry. We lived in Murrisk and our kids attended St. Augustine's School, across from the Famine Ship sculpture. Seeing that and so many other familiar images like the Mall in Westport, paired with this lovely song, makes my heart ache for Ireland. We hope to go back in a year or two but in the meantime, I'll have to content myself with your video. Happy St. Patrick's Day!
"Mo Ghile Mear" is an Irish song, written by an Irish poet, Seán Mac Domhnaill, in the 18th century. It is written in the Irish language, not in Scots Gaelic. It is about an event in Scottish history, but comes from Ireland.
I agree 100% with Kevintkane. I thought the actors were flawless. I've wathched thousands of movies over the years and this is on my top ten for sure. To Ned!
It was an Irish movie. It was filled with Irish actors, and contained countless subltle Irish traditions and cultural nuances. The fact that it was filmed on the Isle of Man is not relevant. The opening scenes to Saving Private Ryan were filmed in Ireland, does that mean it was not about WW II since it was not filmed in France?
It was a terrific tale, the scenery was spectacular, and the soundtrack was second to none.
I don't think jolesie was saying the movie wasn't about Ireland - I think the point was that the Isle of Man funded the film and provided the beautiful scenery. I read jolesie's comment as a "go Manx!" rather than "boo ireland" statement.
Just wanted to point out that it wasn't an Irish movie. It was filmed on the Isle of Man and supported by the Manx authorities, even though the setting of the movie is Ireland. Give credit where credit is due...
Another Clancy gone. I know Irish music is not restricted to the irish. I'm a proud Italian/American and I love some this GREAT Irish music. Telling stories thru song and Ballads.
I LOVE this version! They're not using the tune from 'The Parting Glass', but the tune from Ireland's "alternative" national anthem, 'Mo Ghile Mear' (traditional, not the Celtic Woman tune!) [= Gorgeous!
I agree one of the best movies both visually and in spirit. It is one of the free to view on computer if you have Net Flix. Happy viewing....me thinks I will take a peek again. :-)
Ah yah thats quite possible, but the version they do on their CD is different, it has no accompanyment and much more harmonies and shite, and sung in a nasaly style, hence why its sean nos and this isnt. This may be performed by the Voice Squad but its not their normal version . Il see if I can find a link for it.
I only play tin whistle by ear, and not so great ha. At a pier farthest from night crowd I played this song and still the night strollers came from far to pass me. I couldn't believe how magic this beautiful song is. It captivated me when I heard it at end of Ned Devine movie. I love you Ireland!
i have a very peculiar song list that is to be played at my funeral, and among them, right inbetween TMay It Be sung by Lisa Kelly and the Disney Robin Hood movie Theme Song is this one. :3 I plan on having my youngest brother sing it.
Believe it or not, there are still some 'finger in the ear' purists who dislike this version, too 'popped up' for their liking. Admittedly, the original is rather more sedate. As for the High Kings version being better, I must disagree, check out The Voice Squad who provided backing vocals for this version, a classic trio if ever there was ! Thanks for the video, made very pleasant viewing. Sounds sad, but I've visited Ireland a number of times, and never heard this song being sung :-(
Excellent Song!! Excellent Movie!! Beautiful Country!! I am from Mexico and there are many beautiful places in my country, but I have never seen another country as beautiful as Ireland. I envy all of you.. My Wish is that one day I should visit Ireland.
An amazing song and a great production. Also a great song to send a loved one off to the next life. Walking down Duval Street in Key West on July 25, 2008, as we passed Irish Kevin's, we heard the artist on stage singing The Parting Glass. My 8 year old son looked at me and said, "isn't that song The Parting Glass?" How great is that? Yes, Ian, that is The Parting Glass!
This one of the most incredible versions of the song( the best My ears ever heard0 I can almost smell the years whiskey and tobacco on his breath. why anyone else would ever try to record that song is beyound me
Ed sheerans is the best, in my opinion

"But, since it fell unto my lot, that I should rise and you should not.... I gently rise and softly call... Goodnight, and joy be to you all!"
Wow. What kind of brain comes up with that kind of lyric? Out of my scope. I try to write songs, and fall far short.

Come on, we're almost at the top!
Sleep it off later like the rest of them
- Do we all have a drink? - Here, Maurice.
Take a drink...
..and remember the man.
Then raise your spirits to the sky!
Raise them to Ned Devine!
God bless you, Ned!
And may we be forever in your debt.
