@lecanardaimeLAKland different styles that's for sure. but there are fewer and fewer bassists and bands able to funk and groove like dirk and incubus did, whereas there are tons of songs like lately incubs does, with just 2 or 3 guitar riffs and a poor bass line. no more bass solos, no more insane slap riffs. Dirk was famous and had a name for this. what kenney does sounds just common to me

I just think that some of the bands that have "grown up" haven't necessarily grown up badly. For example, while Red Hot Chili Peppers has definitely had different musical phases, some more funky and some more melodic, they have all been enjoyable to listen to. It's only natural for musicians to evolve over time.
