Do you replace the valve most of the time when remodeling shower...I will be getting my shower redone because it leaks (60 year old mud install) Should I change it to a single handle--hadn't really thought about the valve (just the non-stop leak) Advice? Thanks for sharing I really appreciate you taking the time to educate us...!
Great video, but its not necessary to install the cartridge for a pressure test. The cap you removed (sitting on the wood brace) from the rough-in is intended to be used for pressure testing. Having this cap in would remove the possibility of the customer turning the valve on. Good work though.
Let me give you a tip of advise if you take the end of each cooper pipe and crimp it just a tiny bit into a ovalshape and I do mean slightly in doing so it will prevent the pipe from falling out of the shower valve when you are soldering each pipe into the valve...I seen it be done on other jobs and I myslef have done it and it freaking works...try it on you next job or on an examle and you will see for yourself. Slightttttttttttly only dont exagerate when doing it
Why did you cross the intake line behind the tub spout? Any reason for needing to do it that way? Also, when applying flame, I have been taught to apply the heat mainly to the coupling, that solder follows the heat into the coupling, not to simply melt the solder. But if you melt enough solder onto the joint, aren't leaks pretty unlikely no matter which way you do it?
To gblueslover2: The reason the threads were not used & soldered ( sweated ) is because there isn't a male fitting with compression ring that'll fit on these valves, therefore they are sweated. To mike: Love your work, just FYI..the heat from torch should be on the fittings, not the pipe..you want the solder to travel to the heat. Also use iron pipe to cap off with instead of copper, sometimes its so tight the copper will bend after tile is set & you can't get the male fitting out if it breaks
@StarrTile That's strange, I bought some Shark Bite fittings (with a male compression ring) that are made for such installs and work PERFECT for this application. My shower project worked fantastic with them.
People: Get Shark Bite fittings @ Home Deopt, Lowes, any plumbing supply or hardware store.
That was a great tip at 4:45 to do as many soldering connections as possible before
you have to attach it to the wall. As a contractor you would not belive how many times
I've open these area's in a bathroom and wondered how lucky they where thatthe place didn't burn down because the lumber was scorched and burned badly!
Why would you directly solder the pipes into the valve when the valve has threaded fittings? If you would have used threaded fittings, the NEXT time this valve need to be removed, replaced, or inspected you would have save the next guy some work and some hassle.
@gblueslover2 why would it be a hassle you can always pullk the cartrage regardless if you used thread fittings it is no like you can just unscrew them you would still have to cut a soldered jouint is much more reliable than threaded
@punkrockplumbob Understood, but what if you wanted to change the entire thing out with another brand , or even the same brand that had a entirely different design ? I did mine with threaded Shark Bite brand-type fittings. It's really pequliar to me as to why a person would solder (sweat) right into threaded fittings, other than " that's wahat everybody does". Not me, and a whole bunch of other people as well.
@MaintenanceMouse LOL, not even ! More like a homeowner who's been there, done that & has found a quicker, better way of doing thing. Shark Bite, Gatorbite, either way I'm good. Beats the HECK out of soldering. 5 times faster, cleaner and EASY to change / undo in the future. Solder ? WHY ?
@gblueslover2 Those fittings are code approved even if you don't have any access point (in most locations). Not long ago the different MANUFACTURERS had disclaimers that they shouldn't be concealed.Things might have changed but still don't fully trust them and they are ridiculously expensive!

Shouldn't you flush the lines out using the test cap that comes with the valve before you install the cartridge? Don't you wipe your joints?

@gblueslover2 Because Shark Bites and other brands like it are not manufacturer approved for use in concealed locations (inside wall) :D

@bogdanovr In my instance, I have access points ( panel doors ) in the next room
( Located in the large walk -in closet ) that make all the plumbing EASILY ACESSED :>) !!!!! Per CODE... (Try again) LOL
