The diesel unit is there only to provide dynamic braking.

that diesel just idled along for the ride, I dont think it ever kicked in

it didn't they only use the diesel to get it moving so they don't do ant damage when it starts moving this engine could literally tear it self apart

@GundamKnight07 When they built and used this engine they did not have deisels to help it get started. The deisel is only used incase something goes wrong with the 844 so that they do not damage it more.
