Lee , thanks for this great video.....I hope someday that golden era of bodybuilding will be back once again....this video must be shared !!!! Let the Hardcore Bodybuilding alive , don't make them squeeze money out your pocket just for the sake of some dumb memberships....
Yes, that's a good set up. You may want to pick up a set of Heavy Duty Rubber Fitness Bands to go along with your home gym. I recommend the ones from BodyLasticBands . com they are adjustable tension bands that you can use in place of cable exercises.
This is so true, I'm the onlyone in the gym who trains like a boss, but I don't really pay atention to all the pansy people training next to me, I workout like if I was just working out next to fucking Svend Karlsen, Konstantinovs or any other mo'fu'ka, that hard I train. Oh and there is a gym I go sometimes which it is supposedly a hardcore gym with bodybuilders there and whatever, the funny thing is that they don't allow deadlift because the floor could get damaged, Lol hardcore my ass.
i cant stand most machines i always feel like i make more progress on the free weights
and my gym kinda sucks for the people who go there. bunch of poser panzies. i think ima gona try the other gym i have the use of were all the big dudes go. its true thoe tis a bit intimidateing going to a hard core gym cos i know ill be some much smaller than them
so true... there is big gyms here in vegas.. but i tend to workout in home and at my local gym at a rec center.. where people go there to train and not to talk.. i have at home almost everything i need.. but my gym only cost 16 bucks a month and no contract...so i am set.. and there is a few personal trainers that will help u without charging.
When I first started working out, it was for football. Our weight room was pretty ghetto but that ended up being a good thing. Now I'm use to working out in a hardcore gym with a bunch of guys working just as hard.
@ThaGenius101 yeah because high level athletes don't need the core and stability work that comes from free weight training, oh wait, give me two linemen with all things equal but core and stability strength and the players with the stability and core strength from free weights as opposed to machines will win every time
Thanks Lee, there are a lot of those powder puff gyms popping up all over NC. We really need to get back to hardcore gyms. I am glad someone else noticed this bad trend.
the gym at my school has both hardcore and machinery split down the middle. I've tried both actually and Most of the time free weights are the way to go.
un fortunately for me i have only two choices for a gym here in Chico Ca, so i picked the one owned by Jeff Stover I figure that if an former 49er built it i can;t be that bad and for the most part there are a lot of really big guys there but there is also the 'power puff" crowd there as well. The best I can do is to go in do my work out and let others do theirs.
Lee I like how your so blunt. I sent this video to my colleagues on the wellness center advisory board where I go to college. The facilities manager a professor of exercise promotion was wowed by this video.
@leemhayward Lee, while I would like to agree with you totally about working out at a real gym. The powderpuff gyms came about for one good reason. The old gyms were sticking it to us. The super high monthly fees, 2 yr contracts and no flexibility of getting out if we wanted to go to another gym. So instead of giving us what we wanted, the gyms ignored us. The powderpuffs heard the cries and gave the people what they wanted. Sorry, if the real gyms cared they would have changed a long time ago
lee, thanks for another inspiring and educational video. I recently started getting excruciating hip and knee pain and dull ache deep in my calf/shin area. i made an appt with a dr, but my wife said it means i should stop training for a while, and made me feel i should not be a wimp and go to the Dr. Are these types of injuries normal after 3+ years of training relatively pain free?
The unfortunate bit is, some gyms are cheaper. The gym I train at has a smith machine only as opposed to free weight squat racks (insurance & safety reasons) as this gym is open 24/7. Though I much prefer using a free weight squat rack, I have to make due with that current gym because it fits my budget.
Though I prefer free weights, sometimes utilizing machine weights are best used when trying to do military press with a wrist injury.

Opinions are like a-holes, we all have one, and you are certainly entitled to yours as well. - All opinions aren't equal you fool. Understand the difference and try to use facts ... you'll seem like less of a moron. Less shit slinging and more logical thought.
Unfortunately, the "old school" gyms are a dying breed. Likewise, if your wife and/or kids like to work out, they will feel more comfortable at the "powder puff gyms" and affording the cost of membership at two gyms is not realistic, the "powder puff gyms" wins.
Opinions are like a-holes, we all have one, and you are certainly entitled to yours as well. But can you please name just 1 professional athlete that doesn't believe free weights are effective for building muscle...
@ThaGenius101 Um, yes. All bodybuilders use steroids. Professional athletes train with only machines. All professional athletes are priamarily concerned with building muscle mass. Your last sentence in no way shows that you understood who the video is aimed at enough to make your first sentence a self-admitted lie on your part. It's definitely spelt "Tha", and not "The". And yes, you are obviously a genius. We can all see it.
yes im from northern peninsula i go to a very small gym and pretty much there is a select few people who goes and only the bare essentials for working like bench , dumbells , and well free weights , i get what your trying to say because i went to a gym in nova scotia and you couldn't drop weeights or grunt when you were pressing or lifting alot
I actually get motivated by hot chicks! Put me in a gym filled with hot chicks and i'll be deadlifting like my life depended on it, and i'll scream and grunt like its a war zone!..
I agree with the video. My gym has NO Barbells, only two standard benches for dumbbells and very limited machines. I do think more people going to the gym , whatever their aims is a good not a bad thing though. And from the other viewpoint, there are people who go there that should not be in a "fitness centre", as all they do is lift free weights. I think it's a bit of "big fish, small pond" if you like?
I used to train at an 'average joe' gym and my mates all loved it because as we grew we were pushing to be the bigger people in the gym, this was when i decided to move gym. Im at a gym now where im one of the smaller people in the gym but i love going every week and getting gains and seeing people that are where i wanna be 6 months 12 months or even in years to come
I first started working out in a powder puff gym but I had the mindset to actually train hard but yeah seeing more people training serious helps a lot
@VisionimagifyTV Dam and I was going to look at that gym thanks for the heads up man. I remember when I was playing football, we use to workout in the field house no a/c straight fans and floormats and huge trashcan which alot of people used because the workout where so intense. Nowaday's you got commerical a/c's blowing on you, friendly people waving and you all day (hey buddy take some of that weight off it looks heavy lol). Im going to find me a hardcore gym are i build my own lol.
I train since 9 years. first 6 years in fitness center. 2 years in hardcore gym. and still 3 years till today in another so called fitness center.
My balance? Well it's all about you. I do train hard in both, and find more pleasant to be in a fitness center so i can show my results and have all staring at you. Going in an hardcore gym without proper technique will only destroy you. You can also work hardcore in a "powder puff" by just finding an enough motivated training mate.
@leemhayward your definitely right two thumbs up for this. I currently workout at 24hr fitness but I'm going to cancel my membership and sorry if I offend anybody but it's a powder puff gym. There are so many rules like no taking your shirt off, no chalk, no slamming weights (dead lifts), I swear its like a library in there. I stay in dallas texas and I'm having a hard time finding a hardcore gym where people motivate you to workout instead of telling you sir can you please be little quiet while
hey lee, i have tendonitis in both my elbows and knees, and my doctor said i can still workout but just take it easy, any tips on what i could possibly do?
I never go to the gym, I just train in my room with free weights, I think I have made a huge difference, I don't think gyms are necessary if you can get the equipment at home..
I dont go to the gym, but i go to my garage 6 days a week and do weights, not quite an amazing gym but im getting good gains got some good workouts and im enjoying it! good old dumbbells, pull up bar and a bench. thats all i need!
Great video Lee, I think as well that although the gyms have gotten weaker the reason why most people are getting unfitter is down to our diets as a whole becoming substantially poorer than they used to, such a shame
Lee you're seriously the best bodybuilding partner/channel here on youtube. Every other channel is filled with product advertising and trying to jam supplements down our throats. I really appreciate your genuine interest in helping the online community.
dude im 16 and i want to be a pro bodybuilder, can you check out my vid and give me some tips in cardio and nutrition since im currently offseason?i know how to cut down real fast but i just really hate doing it so i was wondering if you could give me some quick tips in my vids :) thanks
im 15 years old and i like in scotland, i dont have a "hardcore gym" atoll anywhere all these places are just filled with cardio stuff and barley any weights. I WANT TO BE HARDCORE lol
Best video ive ever seen, every single thing u said is completly true
if im at my gym and i deadlift 3 plates (per side for the twiglet noobies) i almost feel like its frownd upon when i put it down, to the point where now i try n put it down all quiet
Such a great video Lee, you are definitely right about the environment you train in. Personally the gym I go to is quiet when I go, and there aren't many people in the weight room which is separate from the "powder puff" room. Everyone in the weight room are all serious for the most part and it's a good environment for me.
I wish we had a basement hardcore gym like in the movies but I am happy with my gym.
I started in the gym at 17, i never even saw a power rack in any of the gyms i went to! I ended up just buying my own weights at home rather than go sit on machines
My membership with my current gym expires soon, and I was considering joining the local Recreation Center because I get an employee discount ($50 a YEAR).
Problem is though, they have NO barbells and NO squat rack. Tons and tons of machines. The only thing decent they have is good dumbbells. Lee, $50 a year is a hell of a good deal, but do you think I should find a different gym that isint decked out with bitch ass machines?
If you are serious about building muscle than you need to train at a real gym that has a fully stocked free weight section with barbells, dumbbells, lots of plates, power rack, benches, etc. A machine only gym is a waste of time and money in my opinion.
im glad that the gym i go to has its own advance training center away from the powder puff area that has everything you need and little to no rules in there. you never have to leave that area and you see every kind of training possible in there i love the atmosphere.
as much as i miss the old school gyms with the paper thin red carpet over concrete floors, 70's wood paneling on the walls, and no a/c...that type of gym is pretty much non existent in nyc where i live
I go to a powder puff gym but at night when I go and all the "hardcore lifters" leave the BEASTS come out lifting over 300 pounds on bench over 350 on squats and deadlifting over 350 also
I dont get it, i can bench 200 pounds and im 15 but my bench is a self spot bench where the bar weighs nothing and theres a thing that doesnt let the bar go down enough to completely hit my chest. Does that mean i cant do that much on an actual bench?
The weights you lift on a machine doesn't not equal what you can lift with free weights. More often than not free weights are harder because you have to balance and support the weights, in addition to lifting them.
at my gym u can do what ever u want i always chuck the weights around and screem those last reps out, and most people that come r big heavy lifters from ages 30 to 50 that would have been ripped in there time.
We all have to start out at that level, But just keep with it and before you know it you'll be past that initial beginners phase, and on your way to a muscular build.
I have two local gyms both are the powderpuff types. Unfortunately I have to decide upon the lesser of two evils as there really is not another within a reasonable distance.
hey Lee im from CBS and this is what i hate about goodlife and im looking at finding another gym ...what gym would you recommend im interested in powerlifting style workouts and would love to find a better gym?
awwsum video lee.... luv it that is all things which are realy going on these dayz...people make fun if u make noise ...do crazy weights...the just start saying ur form is worng...all though the person who is doing knows is right...love to see more topics like these ...
The reason people look so out of shape is that they train way too often, and turn their workouts into an endurance event. They need to up the intensity to the maximum they can do and train briefly (like 20 mins) and infrequently with one set of each exercise once a week, and cut out all the cardio crap!
Gave up training 6 or 7 times a week! Just high intensity for me now once a week Arther Jones style! I don't agree that barbells are superior to machines quite the opposite. Exception being the barbell back squat being maybe better than the leg press.
After watching this video, it actually gave me a boost on my confidence to train more without being intimidated by big guys.. I now treat them as an inspiration to push myself to the limits to gain my dream of having a muscular and fit body someday.. Thank god I watched this! I'll keep watching videos like this to help inspire me more than ever! Thumbs up!
hahaha the reference to planet bitches... um i mean planet fitness is great. the gyms are so whack and full of crap and attract the most bitchy whinny lazy people who instead of getting off their ass are intimated by people who are stronger than them is quite frankly childish shit. Grow the fuck up and stop worrying about what the next person's doing and you might be able to do something for yourself. Those people are nut fucking jobs and i wouldn't want to be around them in life period.
Well where I live we only have one hardcore gym where you can grunt yell and drop your weights. The only problem is that most of the guys do steriods and are really hardcore into it also they have benn doing it a long time. I personally having nothing against steriods or them just its intimidating to go in weaker and less of a physic and I have been at it 3 years natural. So i am stuck at a fucking powder puff gym at least I look bigger there than the hardcore lol...
I'd still train there anyway if I were you. That kind of atmosphere will motivate and inspire you to push yourself harder. Now with that being said you can't be stupid about it, you still have to be careful and lift within your means. But just being around bigger and stronger guys will help pull you up to that level as well.
@leemhayward Always great to get a response back from you Lee. I will go back to the hardcore gym if that is going to benefit me in the long run becauase just thinking about what you said I don't push myself like I did when I first started at these normal gyms also I have been putting more machine exercises in with my workouts than doing free weights, I know I know WHY!!! lol. Thanks for the videos as always and starting Monday I will give it an actual chance. Thanks again....
@vallo220 Ive been to a gym like your explaining here, i was on the squat rack and the guys actually come and support you, the fact of the matter is it doesnt matter who lifts what, if your getting stronger and lifting a bit more each time then your doing well. and people will support you with that.
I agree with u Lee ...where I go and workout at, I'm pretty much a big person there so I guess I'm at a powder puff gym (lol)......i wish there was guys there that is bigger than me because I would like to get motivated more
A rule that was recent in our gym was "Absolutely no gym bags in gym room" .The only people who brought bags were the serious ones, ya lets just say they took all those fliers down within a week....
i have to say,,i hate the grunting noises !!! i have a problem with people sitting on the machines like they're trying to lay an egg too chatting away and texting,,,
Very nice video...I wish I could train at a real gym,but we got only 2 kinds of gym here...planet fitness lol and snap lol again.....

I do bench/deadlifts/squats/all free weights, use the 45s all the time. And I still find that i'm plateauing and not getting a power-figure.
kaidon2 10 months ago
i workout at home using only free weights! i listen to music for motivation and dont get distracted by "powder Puffs" !!

Im going to find me a hardcore gym are i build my own lol.
bigdaddy19821111 10 months ago
I train since 9 years. first 6 years in fitness center. 2 years in hardcore gym. and still 3 years till today in another so called fitness center.
My balance? Well it's all about you. I do train hard in both, and find more pleasant to be in a fitness center so i can show my results and have all staring at you. Going in an hardcore gym without proper technique will only destroy you. You can also work hardcore in a "powder puff" by just finding an enough motivated training mate.

I do my cardio lol
bigdaddy19821111 10 months ago
@leemhayward your definitely right two thumbs up for this. I currently workout at 24hr fitness but I'm going to cancel my membership and sorry if I offend anybody but it's a powder puff gym. There are so many rules like no taking your shirt off, no chalk, no slamming weights (dead lifts), I swear its like a library in there. I stay in dallas texas and I'm having a hard time finding a hardcore gym where people motivate you to workout instead of telling you sir can you please be little quiet while

Great video man well said. I made my own gym in my house theres nothing but free weights lat machine weight benches
Chris.
mcds87 10 months ago
I never go to the gym, I just train in my room with free weights, I think I have made a huge difference, I don't think gyms are necessary if you can get the equipment at home..

I dont go to the gym, but i go to my garage 6 days a week and do weights, not quite an amazing gym but im getting good gains got some good workouts and im enjoying it! good old dumbbells, pull up bar and a bench. thats all i need!
TheNamesSamT 10 months ago
Great video Lee, I think as well that although the gyms have gotten weaker the reason why most people are getting unfitter is down to our diets as a whole becoming substantially poorer than they used to, such a shame

Hey Lee I was wondering do u have listing of all the hardcore gym in the U.S. and Canada
eightball20058 10 months ago
Lee you're seriously the best bodybuilding partner/channel here on youtube. Every other channel is filled with product advertising and trying to jam supplements down our throats. I really appreciate your genuine interest in helping the online community.

IrishRhavin 10 months ago
@IrishRhavin
The lack of a power rack is a sign of a "Powder Puff Fitness Center" LOL
leemhayward 10 months ago
My membership with my current gym expires soon, and I was considering joining the local Recreation Center because I get an employee discount ($50 a YEAR).
Problem is though, they have NO barbells and NO squat rack. Tons and tons of machines. The only thing decent they have is good dumbbells. Lee, $50 a year is a hell of a good deal, but do you think I should find a different gym that isint decked out with bitch ass machines?
orochimaruisugly 10 months ago
@orochimaruisugly
If you are serious about building muscle than you need to train at a real gym that has a fully stocked free weight section with barbells, dumbbells, lots of plates, power rack, benches, etc. A machine only gym is a waste of time and money in my opinion.
leemhayward 10 months ago
im glad that the gym i go to has its own advance training center away from the powder puff area that has everything you need and little to no rules in there. you never have to leave that area and you see every kind of training possible in there i love the atmosphere.
mstrlunx 10 months ago
as much as i miss the old school gyms with the paper thin red carpet over concrete floors, 70's wood paneling on the walls, and no a/c...that type of gym is pretty much non existent in nyc where i live

I go to a powder puff gym but at night when I go and all the "hardcore lifters" leave the BEASTS come out lifting over 300 pounds on bench over 350 on squats and deadlifting over 350 also

This is way I workout at home, my floor may be scuffed up but my body thanks me, barbells and dumbbells thats all I need no machines for me.
Excelion333 10 months ago
I ended up doing deadlifts at home. There isn't really a gym nearby where I can get a real wrokout.
iluvatar003 10 months ago
I dont get it, i can bench 200 pounds and im 15 but my bench is a self spot bench where the bar weighs nothing and theres a thing that doesnt let the bar go down enough to completely hit my chest. Does that mean i cant do that much on an actual bench?
I weigh 120 pounds O.O
LeopardaProductions 10 months ago
@LeopardaProductions
The weights you lift on a machine doesn't not equal what you can lift with free weights. More often than not free weights are harder because you have to balance and support the weights, in addition to lifting them.

BOSS20s 10 months ago
The reason people look so out of shape is that they train way too often, and turn their workouts into an endurance event. They need to up the intensity to the maximum they can do and train briefly (like 20 mins) and infrequently with one set of each exercise once a week, and cut out all the cardio crap!
yobolion 10 months ago
Gave up training 6 or 7 times a week! Just high intensity for me now once a week Arther Jones style! I don't agree that barbells are superior to machines quite the opposite. Exception being the barbell back squat being maybe better than the leg press.
yobolion 10 months ago

Those people are nut fucking jobs and i wouldn't want to be around them in life period.

leemhayward 10 months ago 4
Well where I live we only have one hardcore gym where you can grunt yell and drop your weights. The only problem is that most of the guys do steriods and are really hardcore into it also they have benn doing it a long time. I personally having nothing against steriods or them just its intimidating to go in weaker and less of a physic and I have been at it 3 years natural. So i am stuck at a fucking powder puff gym at least I look bigger there than the hardcore lol...
vallo220 10 months ago 2
@vallo220
I'd still train there anyway if I were you. That kind of atmosphere will motivate and inspire you to push yourself harder. Now with that being said you can't be stupid about it, you still have to be careful and lift within your means. But just being around bigger and stronger guys will help pull you up to that level as well.
leemhayward 10 months ago 4
Spot on Lee !! Use the atmosphere to motivate you ~ that and great music !!
MrHealthDude 10 months ago
@leemhayward Always great to get a response back from you Lee. I will go back to the hardcore gym if that is going to benefit me in the long run becauase just thinking about what you said I don't push myself like I did when I first started at these normal gyms also I have been putting more machine exercises in with my workouts than doing free weights, I know I know WHY!!! lol. Thanks for the videos as always and starting Monday I will give it an actual chance. Thanks again....
vallo220 10 months ago
@vallo220 Ive been to a gym like your explaining here, i was on the squat rack and the guys actually come and support you, the fact of the matter is it doesnt matter who lifts what, if your getting stronger and lifting a bit more each time then your doing well. and people will support you with that.
