hey man these are great lessons and no one has ever posted a vid for slashs techniques as great as this. when slash does this lick, doesnt he also sometimes use the second string too?
Outstanding question. He does in fact use 2 strings simultaneously when doing this lick. But he only uses 2 strings for this lick when he's playing really high up on the neck. I probably should have done a variation with two strings. And thanks for the kind words too!!!
hi men, great lessons!!!!, they really helped me out dig slash's tone and technique. PLEASE do some new lessons fron the Paris 92 Solo please. thanks and keep on rocking!!!! : )
Thanks man! The Paris solo has a lot of the same licks in it actually. We'll put together some new videos in the future but out schedules are WAY too cramped right now. But if you have one lick in particular from the Paris solo you want to learn, let me know which one.
cuold you tell me your guitar and amp set up please ? i have a epiphone les paul and a marshall amp but doesn't sound a patch on your sound, i am saving for a marshall valve amp will that make all the difference ? awesome guitar work by the way my absolute idol is also slash ! cheers shaggy
Thanks for writing in Shaggy. Chasing tones is a very personal thing to any guitar player. If the Marshall Valve sounds good to you, go for it. But you have to trust your own ears. I would definitely experiment and try out other amps out there.
As far as what I'm using, I'm not even plugged into a real amp here. I'm actually using a program called Guitar Rig 3.
These are good vids Mashnflutter but what are the knobs set at on your guitar? and is everyone of these examples tuned down a half step? Do you know why slash tunes down a half step?
Great questions! The knobs on my guitar are rolled all the way up to 10. I'm really not doing anything special with them.
On AFD and the Illusions records Slash tuned down a 1/2 step. I believe he did this for two reasons. 1) The guitar tone is much darker and heavier which I think he prefers...
...AND 2) Probably more importantly it made Axl's voice sound EVEN higher. Back in the 1980's the "in- thing" was to have a singer who had a really high voical range. Recording music with detuned instruments will give the impression that a singers voice is higher than it really is. Plus, the singer won't have to strain his voice as much when singing in the higher register.
Thanks for the kind words. Yes, that's Ben and he does all of the electronic stuff. He's unbelievably talented. Anyone who digs Bt, Aphex Twin or the Chemical Brothers should check his stuff out.
Believe it or not, it's actually not an amp at all. It's a VST Instrument called Guitar Rig 3 made by Native Instruments. Check it out, it's pretty sweet.
haha i do that all the time in my playing and never really realized that slash or jeff beck did it even though im a big fan of both of them. great videos man!
Thanks hitdawg! I've found that there's a lot of crossover with these licks among many of my favorite players: like Paul Gilbert, Satch, Dimebag, Zakk Wylde, etc.) Even though Slash uses a ton of re-heated rock licks, he uses really good source material.
Or you could just bend it then go to the B on the 11th fret on the string below it...

chadgarber 1 year ago
@chadgarber You totally could. Do what's most comfortable for you.
mashandflutter 1 year ago

@cyanidde and you obviously can't spell "cyanide" properly. Also, it's not a "legend", it's a tale...

he uses this lick in the solo of slither doesn't he?
neverscared92 2 years ago
Great question! Actually on the album he doesn't use this lick. However, on some live performances of Slither he has thrown this lick in.
mashandflutter 2 years ago
I don't think he does actually. But Slash uses this lick a lot live for sure.
mashandflutter 2 years ago
I don't think he uses it in Slither, however he relies on this lick a lot live.

ye down tuning not only sounds better but it places less strain on your fingers and the strings and there4= monster solos yeah!!!!
lingfield 3 years ago
Detuning strings definitely feels and sounds different. I personally prefer tuning down but using heavier strings like 12's or 13's.

Actually Slash has borrowed a lot from Jimmy. Some of these licks are licks that Page has used several times as well.
