RTV is more of a Plan B if you can't find a reasonably priced gasket, maybe should have made it a point to say that. While it is convenient and does do the job, taking it out is a b%&$ and too much will result in RTV being pushed into whatever your trying to seal. Also is advisable to let it sit 10-15 mins to let the outside cure before installing the cover, and when installing, 'finger tighten' the bolts to put slight pressure on the ghetto gasket for 1hr, then torque them to spec.
@sl1solo7622 Any advice on if I have the gasket & the RTV , I have a 91 gmc sierra well over due differential lub change. should I put Rtv on both sides of the gasket?
"you cant use too much of it, but it is possible to use too little." nooope. if there is silicone leaking out the outside, then it is also leaking on the inside. my automotive teacher actually uses these videos in order to get students to pay attention to the mistakes this guy makes. great strategy, gets the whole class involved.
Its messy, time consuming and a pain to scrape off next time you service your diff. Dont be a cheap B*****d, buy a gasket and save yourself some time. they dont leak if you take the cover off the proper way. You never use a screw driver to break the cover loose. You tap it with a rubber mallet and when you put the cover on torque the bolts to proper specs. I never use RTV on anything.
@chapmanj69 Dude, 1/2 the time you can't even get a replacement gasket for a rear differential, no one online or at any brick and mortar parts store sells a rear diff gasket for my 1995 GMC Jimmy. If you would have watched his previous video, you'd have seen him using a rubber mallet to remove the cover. RTV isn't hard to remove at all, it peels off like a sticker, all in one piece.
@laurajdahl when you apply the RTV, you must wait 5 minutes before replacing the part, and at least an hour to refill it with oil or antifreeze or any other fluid depending what are u fixing. this way you avoid the risk of mixing. good luck!
not really hot, but it does generate some heat and its warm to the touch if you have been driving for a while. when you look at oil, like motor oil or gear oil the first number is how thick it is cold and the second is how thick it is warm. higher the number the thicker it is.
@laurajdahl oh yes!, it gets hot, every part of your car that receive some kind of friction, and the diff gets too much friction in it, that´s why the oil in it is more thick than in other vehicle´s parts. i recomend u to change this oil once a year.
haha i like the end where he just stares at the camera! haha by the way why didn't you just order a gasket from fel-pro and then coat the gasket in rtv... wouldn't that be the proper thing to do when applying a differential gasket..???
I've done this before, you don't have to buy a gasket. The RTV is all you need. It doesn't leak. The first time I tried I asked the NAPA counter guy and he said you don't need to replace the gasket. he was correct.
thanks alot Nathan, your videos are going to help me and alot of other people save money by doing it themselves..it would also be helpful if you could say how much it would cost for those kind of parts, lubricants-ect.
Hi Nathan----Thanks for such a great job putting these technical videos together. --these videos are no just for people that know nothing about cars (like me)but for some guys that need some support doing things little better.
great stuff but he never blinks...

I took the time to cut a gasket out of 1/8" rubber raft bottom. Works great. No leaks on my 8.8 at all.

that rtv thing is great i think i use it too much on other things other than gaskets lol it seals very well and hardens without becoming solid.

Will the RTV mess up the Grease/lub if it gets mixed in with the lub?

This may be a stupid question (but its okay cause I'm a girl) Does the Diff get hot when driven? I have a 97 Jeep Sport Wrangler..
THanks...
