wow can you imagine, going out to space, tootally diffrent place, they renter the atmopshere, and land perfectly right on the runway line, from the hieght, altidude and speed.
That sound is the APU's (Auxiliary Power Units). The Space Shuttle has three APU's to produce hydraulic power to enable movement and control of the aero surfaces (elevons and the rudder). The exhausting APU gas sounds like a train. You can see this exhausting at 03:35 in this video.
its like the sound a plane landing makes, except much louder because the shuttle is going alooooottttt faster. its basically outrunning it's own sound.
what's the size of the runway?

If you look at about 3:38 it goes to thermal and you can see gases being vented at the same time as the "train sound".

Buran is much better than the American equivalent. It was the first space shuttle to fly and land completely automatically.

Its not as though this thing can abort a landing and fly around for another shot is it?

I heard they sometimes perform at airshows where they can been seen doing loops, sometimes even inverted beat-ups.

What were the vapours coming off the top of the shuttle?
