Unless you have a sever cleft lip playing the flute shouldnt be a problem. One of the reason why music teachers tell you "your lips are too big" ect is because they have to spread people out among the instruments... you cant have 20 flute players in a 40 person ensemble.
People play out from the side of their mouth just as well as people who play from the center.
If you want to play flute, dont let anyone discourage you and force you to clarinet or sax!

Piccolo is not harder than flute "to play", people only make you think it is. The reason is it easier to play is because the embrasure variant is less on a piccolo and much more varying on a flute especially when playing the bottom register and switching to the top.
The only thing more "difficult" with playing the piccolo is keeping it in tone when playing the higher notes.
Any flute player knows that high notes go sharp on flute, and more so on piccolo.
If all you can play is 5 notes before having to take a breath something is wrong with your embrasure.
They key to playing the flute well is knowing what is too much air and what is too little. As you play more and more you will naturally find the balance between the two.
Piccolo is harder than flute, but you should definitely start with flute, not piccolo. Learn the basics on flute before advancing to piccolo. I guess it is possible to start on piccolo, just harder! By the way, lip shape doesn't really have anything to do with it. Some lip shapes make making an embrochure a little difficult at first, but it doesn't stop you.

its interpretive playing. you need imagination, texture in your tone an utter flexibility to play like that.. im sure you play clearly an fluently. but it takes years to be able to get the dual sound of humming while you play. he actually does the staccato percussive sounds incredibly well. kudos louthejew amazing...

Fantastic! He reminds me (in his suit) of 'Anchor Man', when he plays YAZZ FLUTE!!! Dave Valentin has amazing warmth of character, which gives live to his beautiful music.
I've never really ventured into Jazz much, but i can tell that's good. i've tried sing and playing simultaniously and it is HARD. it's ok once you know how to do it, though
It is more probable that Ian might have taken this tech. from Dave. Dave is obviously more talented than Ian. Check him out, he's played with all the big name jazz cats for MANY years.

The only reason you could possibly think that is if you really don't have much of an ear for music. Sure you might hear the notes, but apparently thats all you think there is. (Not to mention this was improved, clearly noted by the title of the song "I don't know what I'm going to do")
yeah, my picc isn't hard to play at all... but i looove the sound it makes!!! It drives my mom insane, but i absoloutly adore it! of course, i love my flute too, but the picc has a special place in my heart <3... next im savin up for a base flute! woot!
I seriously doubt you could play better than him, beings your only an 8th grader and he's a renound flautist. I'll be in 11th grade and in my schools top band, but I can say I'm only half as good as he is, so give credit where credit is due.
that's not superb playing, I've heard flutists one year above me that can play way better than tha.(ive been playing for three years and im pretty good... but i know i still have a long way to go)
those notes were pretty basic. and piccolo isn't somethign to brag about, its simple, though i have no desire to play it. i prefer the flute over anything
even if the notes were pretty basic it sounded amazing the sound was perfect, maybe you cant tell the difrence yet it takes more then three years to devlop an year for it, and the jazz sound, and the aritculation it was perfect, the rythms were really tricky. And have you played a picolo? it's pretty hard, and have you even tried that noise thing he does? it's almost immpossible to play that well
I saw him live with Grover Washington Jr. & Stan Getz at Montecello, NY...6 hour concert...WOW. My hands were black & blue from clapping.

Its called flutter tounging, I'm not a flute player, but its quite hard when you play actual rythms, but its easy if your just messing around.

are you listening to that?XD the ryhtmys, how high the notes are, the aritculation, the noises he makes while playing their so freaking hard, to have that kind of control over your sound...i dont think soXD

The only reason you could possibly think that is if you really don't have much of an ear for music. Sure you might hear the notes, but apparently thats all you think there is. (Not to mention this was improved, clearly noted by the title of the song "I don't know what I'm going to do")

Dave Valentin is one of the world's best flautists, so..... yeah, i doubt that you'd play better. ^^

yeah, my picc isn't hard to play at all... but i looove the sound it makes!!! It drives my mom insane, but i absoloutly adore it! of course, i love my flute too, but the picc has a special place in my heart <3... next im savin up for a base flute! woot!

I seriously doubt you could play better than him, beings your only an 8th grader and he's a renound flautist. I'll be in 11th grade and in my schools top band, but I can say I'm only half as good as he is, so give credit where credit is due.

that's not superb playing, I've heard flutists one year above me that can play way better than tha.(ive been playing for three years and im pretty good... but i know i still have a long way to go)
those notes were pretty basic. and piccolo isn't somethign to brag about, its simple, though i have no desire to play it. i prefer the flute over anything

even if the notes were pretty basic it sounded amazing the sound was perfect, maybe you cant tell the difrence yet it takes more then three years to devlop an year for it, and the jazz sound, and the aritculation it was perfect, the rythms were really tricky. And have you played a picolo? it's pretty hard, and have you even tried that noise thing he does? it's almost immpossible to play that well
