@radngnarlysk8 Be extremely good at calculus, and apply to a University that has as Astronomy program. Short of that, you can become an amateur astronomer by becoming as experienced as possible with telescopes and vigorously studying the night sky.
if it is this large, if we look at it through a telescope can we actually see it? or what would it be like? or would it be so big that we dont notice it?
im an amateur astronomer and this is definitely interesting. its winter and ive seen Sirius and even Pocyon. i actually have a little recording of Pocyon! Its unbelievable!
@JustMusikTV Yep, tt can be seen thru an average telescope though it can be hard to find. It's an 8th magnitude star, surrounded by nebulosity, not far from Tau Canis Majoris. Part of the problem with viewing it, is that it has thrown off so much gas that it's become somewhat obscured. It's also a variable star, and will change luminosity.
Glad to meet another amateur astronomer! Personally, winter viewing is my favorite. ;)
@fizzybgood Thanks for the reply. Yeah i agree, im from the UK and its winter right now. You can see the those Winter stars (pocyon, sirius, betelgeuse).
Have you seen Pocyon through a telescope? I was left speechless when i saw it the other night, i need to upload a video of what i saw. & winter viewings perfect, even the cold just adds to the experience lol.
what were these huge stars used for? light ...just like our sun...so that must mean there has to be earth like planet that gets light from these stars ..but are not found yet or have exploded with this huge star and the light covered it all up...my ballz are iching let me grab some tea.

That was excellent Fizz! Reminds me of the videos we used to play at the planetarium. Very well done. Much more jam packed with information than my videos. That almost sounded like harry potter music in the background. ; )
Seriously, I cannot even comprehend a star so large that it would extend past Saturn. Now that the good weather is here, it may be time to head out to the backyard and see some of this stuff myself. Great video!
my mind cant get used to it, that makes humanity looks like nothing...

is this one of those cepheid variables?
sadathusain 10 months ago
@sadathusain As far as I know, VY Canis Majoris is a semi-regular variable. It's variability is a little more erratic than Cepheids.

@PJsCreed Heh, when I was recording the sound I almost slipped up a few times and said Cannabis. That would have been awkward.
Yeah, VY CMa is truly a colossal star. Mind boggling large. Glad you liked the vid, and if you head outside, may you have clear skies! :)
