The result should be an awesome mix of classical and jazz music, with explosive soundwave strikes and other sound-based powers.

The whole Thriller Bark arc is an homage to the music video of the song "Thriller" by Michael Jackson from the album of the same name. Hence the hyperactive zombies.

Not the first by Oda since the character Django was moonwalking when first introduced from way back.

If you read TV Tropes like I did, you would have learned that not only is there not a single pirate with an eyepatch, but Oda is saving it for someone special.

As it is, this is hardly a straight forward pirate series with the Devil Fruits, martial arts powers, clowns, amazons and cyborgs.

But yeah this is a BLAM moment straight up, I would have prefered it if they made the Thriller similarities clearer... :/ Or reused this idea somehow...

I think that phrase is overused. It doesn't really feel out of place. They build to it for a whole episode with the zombies carrying the disco ball, it marks the start of the zombies going into battle, and Japan looooves singing zombies. MJ's Thriller is still huge there, so when you see zombies in an even vaguely humorous anime, they're probably going to dance.
