Now what VIA needs a real TGV for linking Montreal to NYC and Boston. They have not renewed the fleet with true fast trains since the LRC while Bombardier is supplying the Acela Express and HPP8 to Amtrack.
Canada has been outdistanced by most developed countries (Sweden, Spain, Korea, China and Australia). Even Morocco, Turkey and Croatia are getting their TGVs.
O.K. guys, here's the deal. The locos were a mechanical nightmare--thus they have been removed from service. The coaches tilt mechanism was disabled years ago. They do NOT tilt anymore at all. As for European tilt technology, are you familiar with British Rail's APT? It didn't work either.
The LRC might have active tilt, but if it's not "hooked up", one might say it doesn't quite count. However, I'll give you the Acela--despite its initial teething problems.
Thanks for saving this video and posting it! VIA needs to run ads like this again - though with ridership up 12%, maybe VIA 'doesn't' need to run ads....
Hi. Anything to help someone who doesn't speak English as his mother tongue! (We would say, 'write out the lyrics', not make the lyrics.) We can do magic, come take the train, a special world of comfort and care, a wonderful view, with so much to share. Come feel the magic, come take the train, no other road will be the same, come feel the magic, take the train. VIA
I grew up with this commercial and have had this theme song in my head for the last 20+ years. Thank you so much for posting it! It reminds me of a much simpler time. Gotta love the LRC's.
Beautiful commercial, the LRC consists look shiny and new! And now I know that VIA train attendants had red uniforms in the 1980s. Anyone know what the stations at the beginning and ending are?
I honestly do not know what happened to the locomotives, I try to research the reason why they're not still used but can't find anything. Anyone know why they were replaced?
ya id love to kno because they didnt use them for that long. maby 10 years. 15 tops. i meen who else would buy them for use? and i dont imagin they would scrap something they barely used. like look at some of CP's locomotives. i was on a GP9 not too long ago that has been kicking around since the 60's:P and its still the main loco at the intermodal yard i went to. that and an SW that looks twice as old. :P if anyone knos what happened to them or where they went plz let me and priestpilot kno :)
There were a number of problems with the LRC locos, right from the start. Initially, they had issues with powdery snow getting inside the engine and causing problems, although they sorted that out. But as it went, the locomotives were far too heavy (which seems kind of ironic, with the L in LRC being for "Light"...Come 2001, VIA realized they were not living up to their standards anymore, and just weren't going to keep them going...the P42's came along, and out went the LRCs...
...The LRC coaches on the other hand, were top-of-the-line machinery, well ahead of their time, and still run beautifully today. They're due for an overhaul soon (which is to be done over the next few years with the F40's...the LRCs will then return painted like the Renaissance cars, as rumour has it). Honestly though, it is sad to see the LRC locos gone (some are scrapped, some are in storage). VIA just didn't want to put the effort needed to keep them going, like with the F40's.
Thanks for the reply. I also read that the LRC had power tilt technology. What happened with this? Some sources say that the tilt is disabled, some say it's still being used. I rode in an LRC once, I did not notice anything. I also read that the LRC technology was put into the carriages of the Acela Express, which I think it awesome!
The LRC COACHES do have tilting built in, although it is not always activated. The LRC locomotives themselves were never equipped with tiliting capability, because it was considered too expensive and complicated. The coaches' tilting is activated only on certain parts of the routes where it is considered and asset, and only when all of the coaches have it functioning properly (not surprisingly, it often breaks down...and if 1 coach in the consist is down, you can't use the tilt on the rest.
It Canada I'd advertise it "F**k snow, take train". ;)

I wonder if the singer was chosen because she sounded like Dionne Warwicke. :-)

Interesting - no unit numbers on the side of the cab. (Number boards show 6915, though.)

Passive tilt technology is still used in North America, at least on the Amtrak trainset that runs Vancouver-Seattle
ralph435z 2 years ago
True, but the LRC was supposed to have active tilt technology.
BulletNoseBetty 2 years ago
The LRC does have active tilt technology. The LRC was the basis for Amtrak's Acela - which uses active tilt in regular daily service today.

does anyone know why , if the tilt technology has worked in europe why it couldn't work here ?

It does work here on the Acela.

The LRC set is a good looking piece of kit. To bad they didn't last as long.

It's alright looking - but its style has aged less well than the Turbo's.

Well, just about a week ago, 5 LRC engines were scrapped. They were nice engines. Nice paint scheme too. It's a shame to see them go.
gtw4918 2 years ago
They scrapped them? Until recently they've been for sale on Via's website.
ralph435z 2 years ago
There's old LRC locos sitting at VIA's storage yard in Toronto.
