yep! I saw some guy at NTIF a few years back who did the same thing - took a guitar, cut a new nut and bridge for the bouzouki strings, and strung it up.
I think on Bohola's site (the band Broaders normally plays in), they call the instrument a bouzar (bouzouki guitar). I saw Bohola play live about two years ago and Pat Broaders put on the most incredible demonstration of playing rhythm that I've ever seen. I cannot describe how impressive it was.
Actually Pat is playing a Dordan with a guitar body (made by Joe Foley) not a bouzouki. A Dordan is a fifth below the bouzouki. Pat tunes his CGCG. Basically a long-necked mandocello in modal tuning.
Pat himself told me it was a bouzouki/dreadnought guitar hybrid. Even Bohola's site says "Pat has this acute sense of music and rhythm that enables him to "lock in" his bouzar (bass bouzouki & guitar hybrid) playing to whatever I might do musically and rhythmically." It's really neither here nor there however.
Yeah, the "bass bouzouki" term is kind of a misnomer, though, as it is really only a fifth below. I have played it. Lovely instrument, plays like butter. He said Joe is also building him a "real" bass bouzouki tuned an octave below a regular zouk. That will be something to hear!
I would just love to see Bohola play live again. I'm in Tennessee and they were just passing through and were booked to play in the middle of the week at a cool little venue. It was a great show. Even if they were going to be within a couple of hours, I'd make that drive. This video doesn't really illustrate how impressive Pat Broaders is as a rhythm player. He is amazingly talented.
Yeah, I agree. He wasn't really going crazy here, but then Catherine has a lovely style of flute playing and I suppose Pat turned on full blast might overwhelm her;) I grew up in Tennessee! Where are you based?
she certainly jazzed up the rookery

I thought the bouzar was a new instrument, really guitar and zouk mixed up...but it's just a guitar stringed like a bouzouki :(

My friend Peter might rival her for jokes. He said to me one day "Would ya give us your B-flat there," knowing that I was a bodhran player.

Thanks sooooo much for posting this vid! Loved her concert! Excellent player! p.s. Pat is playing a bouzouki, just with a guitar body.
