He is still just about the only guy that can hang right up there with Guthrie technically, but I feel he has a lot more creativity and pure musicality than Govan, and that's saying something.
@metalstylex He's not underrated at all. He's just not as famous as the American or British guitar freaks because he comes from France and because he doesn't care for the international media. Maybe a shame, maybe good reasons. Who knows ?
i went to the 2007 namm show (my first namm show) as a keyboard player...... my dad was able to get us passes. and i saw many guitar booths and guys just ripping..... i quit the keyboard and got a guitar. ive been playing for 2 years now and i love it!!! 2007 namm was my insparation to start playing guitar XD!!!!!!!!
You know what make me laugh most is that kind of people can accept virtuosity on keyuboard for the piano player, and on violin , sax etc but not guitar; specially electric one have to stay to prehistoric level, no chance to level up, poor instrument guys think rock'n roll is a guy under drug strummin chord in the wrong way... fuck them! Hendrix up there should very disappointed...
Because you canät compeat in music, do only thing you can measure from a scale 1-10 is technique, in we all know that a good guitarist needs more than technique.
You can compete in music. Battle of the bands, American Idol, drum offs and spin offs. Even the world of classical music has their version of the Oscars. Well crafted music, at least western music, has structure and predictability. You can anticipate the next chord in new songs you hear and know on which note to end your guitar solo. Anybody can be a successful artist, we are all born capable. It's the drive and dedication that makes truly great artists and that is quantifiable as TECHNIQUE.
Ultimately music is a form of communication. And as western societies become more and more relax and casual our music is reflecting that, that is true with all forms of communication.
Proof that old guys can rock, kick ass, and have fun doing it. I dig his vibe..he's not just a speed merchant. I like the no-compromise take no prisoners approach he has on display.
honestly...the whole fast thing guys...that whole thing was not fast...I actually thought that he had quite a bit of slower stuff in there...I thought it was a pretty even solo of speed, technicality, and feeling. Kudos from me anyway
sure are lots of notes in there. If fast is good then he is good. only takes about 15 seconds of shred to prove your point that you CAN shred though. Albert King told Stevie Ray to "say it all with one note". Dont think this guy could do that.
Agreed. There is something to be said for slowing down. This guy has great technique, and an abundance of chops, but his playing seems to be a bit self-indulgent. I would like to hear him slow down and build up his solos. Best advice I ever got, "don't blow your wad all up front".
If you could play like that, you would. That's number 1. Second, mere jealousy doesn't help. He was doing a presentation; a clinic, whatever. He has one beat, a fast one, and he was abusing every scale/techinique he could to fit within the time signature. Maybe he should've done a ballad? Because I have heard him do those, they are on Vai level.
Don't denegrate his talent, if you do you are merely lying to yourself.
Check out my videos by Michael Gregory. They are a perfect example of a guy that CAN play fast...but doesn't need to in order to sound excellent. Michael is a studio pro that plays every style from shred to chicken pickin.
He's also an excellent teacher...just ask Frank Hannon and Tommy Skeoch of Tesla. A big thing that he preaches is that playing guitar is not an Olympic Sport, or a competition of speed. If it were, Christophe would be a world class competitor.
That is true. There is a lot to be said about phrasing and tastefulness.
However, he is quite talented. I think people often expect to much from guitar players. Some are just weekend warriors who become very good; he is still an excellent fusion player.
I completely agree that Christophe is a great fusion player. And I do like fusion rock. Actually, much of Michael's original stuff is in that vein. He had a song called Vermicula Polky on Guitar On The Edge Vol. 3 that is along those lines. I can send you a link if you're interested.
This guy is decent. I can think of one thing that could make him better though: Superpowers. Other than that, I'm not sure how he could be much sicker.
When I see that, I'm proud of beinf french.

Do you really listen to this solo ?
Keep in mind music is not about speed or not, just about expression and feeling.
And in that staff you could hear some pretty modal sounds and melodic licks, linked by a fabulous technique.

Yes, that´s all true.
But, somebody have to be the judge. 100 years ago, in western music, it was unthinkable to end a song on a minor chord.
Just like diminshed chords today, they are just "passing" chord --> leading somewere.
All modern west scale, is built off how we listen. Do you know why the 7 chord came decades before maj7 chord?
because of the flagollete scale, when a instrument is tuned clean. in that scale, it´s the 7 you hear.
The way we listen to music changes.

So who can decide the ultimate song?

I don't know, I can only help you determine the ultimate guitarist.
