@discofishing, that's true. The M stands for modernized. There is a down side is this. One guy said he could see wisps of hair and another said he could read name tags, with a similar system, at 1,000 meters. With such praises, no gunner is going to escape any friendly fire incident. "See this (pointing to the video), couldn't you see 'U.S. Army' right on his freaking shirt?" Or how about, "What do you mean you thought he was shooting a pistol? He is clearly smoking a cigarette."
@orlock20 I don't really understand much of what you said. Yes, there are better systems out there than MTADS, but that wasn't my point. My point was that MTADS is a massive improvement over legacy TADS both in picture quality, recognition/engagement range, reliability, maintainability and supportability. This new MTADS that is being field will REDUCE fratricide. You lost me after "There is a downside..." As far as I know, the only downside to MTADS is that the MPNVS has a reduced slew rate.
@discofishing There was a leaked Apache video where the gunner said some guys standing by a car had weapons in their hands and you could see their fingers and there was no weapon in their hands. With the older system, it was possible to say that they did have weapons in their hands and the gunner would have gotten away with it. With many other modern helicopters, humans look like blobs.
How could you ever make fun of Apache drivers???Nothing matters if your flying the most sophisticated and deadly attack helo in the world...everyone wants to be you...as with the mtads...im unaware of the mtads ever having anything but an amazing flir since the introduction in 05...however, what i believe your referring to is the oringinal tads system on the A model and D model thru 04, it did need some improvement since it was 70's technology....Nice video...
Yeah, it is MTADS. Symbology is not the legacy TADS. The big X over the cross hairs lets you know the laser is on and armed. That's new to MTADS. The quality of the video is so crappy it would make one thing it was just regular old TADS.

MTADS was never crappy, it was TADS that was crappy. MTADS is the "modernized" version of TADS.
