OK ok so Im confused since im watching all these videos at once. Can you break it down for me real fast? Limiter first, then harmonic exciter, then eq? Sorry its just in one vid you said limiter before eq, etc etc so it would be helpful if you could write down the order in your reply please :) thank you
These are incredible tutorials, but I'm frustrated because I can't hear the difference when adding just 1db or .5db. I have a decent pair of headphones, and I think I have pretty good ears, but I swear I can't tell the difference. Does this require really nice headphones or something?
@StickEmUpRecords I am happy that you are finding the tutorials useful. It takes time to hear the subtlety of 1 dB or .5dB gain changes. But over time, with good monitoring, you will become sensitive to these subtle changes. In fact, most of my students become sensitive to .1 dB changes. I use the JBL LSR series monitors for my near field monitoring and the Sennheiser HD 650's for headphone monitoring, using my Dangerous D-Box and Metric Halo 2882. Thanks for watching! Stay tuned! - Daniel Wyatt
Can someone help me out please, is it okee if i drop in izotope ozone in all of the diff. parts in my mix, usually i drop it in my claps, loops, synths etc? can i do that or is it a no. also is there anything wrong with using presets?
@KrackhauSwag That definitely can't hurt, would just give you more control. Only thing is, that sounds like a BIG hit to your CPU haha. You should check out iZotope's Alloy plugin. Amazing plugin for individual parts in the mix, and looks and feels almost exactly like Ozone does. And it's not that there's anything wrong with presets, but they should be used as starting points, not a one-size-fits-all. Every mix is different.
Signal in, Signal Out......The more time you spend learning the production theory behind all the plug in's will truely help your music out, Great video series!!! I love using Ozone!!! it helps me fine tune and add that extra professional 'sparkle' that my tracks sometimes need to be Great!!!
It helps if you have top notch monitors and a good room to mix/master!!! Thanks!!!
What if the exciter creates this "bump" in an frequency area where an other element is that is fragile and needs space and has its fundamental lets say on 200 hz but the kick on 100 hz which means that the exciter would put a bump on 200 hz squashing the 200 hz element or am i understanding wrong?
Great video bro! Are you by any chance planing on making a "Mastering with Ableton Only" video? For people who can`t afford or don`t want extra mastering software? Peace
If you guys share this information for free I can only imagine how in depth and informative the actual classes are. Good move on sharing this much online for free. It makes me want to sign up for the class even more so.
@BloodShotNow these techniques are still applicable to rock and other genres, albeit with different EQing and the like, but Ozone is a versatile program. On top of that, album sales are not necessarily an accurate measure of musicality; personally, I believe that the greatest artists of all time, in terms of quality of musicianship and composition, lie in the world of jazz. Any argument that one genre of music is "better" than another reflects a lack of understanding of music as a whole.
I just want to thank you so much for your tutorial. I've been trying to master for months and really didn't know what I was doing. I did step by step while the video was playing and it makes my track sound amazing. The subtle EQ adjustments really shined through the track. This is an amazing VST. Thanks you!
T-Racks sounds a lot better. I´m a mastering audio engineer and I use Waves and better plugins than Ozone and T-Racks, but I would like to say that Ozone sounds not that good and T-Racks 3 sounds really a lot better than Ozone. Its a difference between T-Racks and Ozone like day and night. I give Ozone from 10 possible points 6.5 points and I give T-Racks 3 from 10 possible points 8.5 points. Ozone sounds cold and empty. I don´t see any reason why Ozone gets called a serious mastering plugin.
@BraindanceLabel That's because its more transparent, I noticed a lot of mastering engineers are being bias to a "none acute" vintage wanting warmth of the utilities they use. Some prefer more transparent "albeit" cold but more transparent none the less.
Your explanation is easy to understand-voice is clear, pace is right. You made good video out stands among many.Thanks. By the way im technically novice, may I ask what kind of camera & microphone did you used to make this video? as an example, you high lighted words on the screen like "tube" ...Do you have to use a video editing program to do that? Thanks again.
This is the 3rd video tutorial of Ozone 4, right? It would be so great to see more about this great program and your mastering secrets. Thanks so much so far. Are more videos planned?
i got a question. do you guys all work in 44,1 khz or in 96 khz while editing, mixing and mastering? i do idm electronica music and i like to work with 44,1 khz and 32 bit but sometimes i also like to "see" how far i can go with editing so i go up to 96 khz or even 192 khz... it sounds a lot better... more space between the transients at higher rates... that makes it sound more clear and higher quality... i even mastered at 3 mhz... sounds amazing... but just adobe audition 3 goes that high..
@konjunktion26 Do you notice that much difference?I ask because I posted this question in a forum (or chat room)Having not tried it myself, everyone said that there was no audible difference to the human ear and that it just used resources with little to no gain in sonic quality.I was also told to always work in the same format i.e. 24bit 44.1Khz.Changing bit depth means adding dither,so the more its changed the more artiffacts will creep in.Some even said that very high sample rates were worse.
You need no dither if you convert. Its just a decision. Dither adds some noise so the bits don´t get lost if you edited at 48 bit audio resolution or whatever is higher than 32 bit, 16 bit or 24 bit in your case. Or however. Anyway. A higher kHZ resolution means that the vortex, the energetic area, between transients - has more space than in lower kHz resolutions. This means all tones are more clean without coloring other tones. Its like trying to not mix up colors. Understand?
@konjunktion26 Ill be honest I dont really understand. The point I was trying to make was, when I asked this question most people told me that unless ALL my samples, recording and final mix are all in the same format then what you gain is lost when its put to CD/DVD.If you want to keep it at high sample rates and bit depth for your OWN collection then there is a small amount to gain.Like I said I dont really understand thats why I asked the same question.I think it was on KVR maybe ask there.
On KVR I got banned because I said Autechre´s mastering of their new album sounds shit. The admin said he doesn´t needs idiots like me and banned me directly for saying that. What is the question? I still don´t understand your problem. Could you describe in one phrase your problem?
@konjunktion26 I dont have a problem.I assumed that higher bit depths and sample rates ment better quality. When I asked what was best and or difference between all of the bit depths and sample rates.KVR members told me what iv explained in my other replys.Basicaly that the extra resourses needed for high bits/s.rates dont make up for the small gain in audio quality to the human ear.
@konjunktion26 I have a friend (through internet) that masters films and music, ill ask him next time we speak but im sure he said something very similer to the KVR members.Ill get get back to once iv spoke to him.Dont always belive marketing hype about a product. When I bought my soundcard I was like "this one goes upto 192Khz must be better" only to be told by peers that actually it was'nt.If you think you can hear a difference then it must be working for you,but if you release anything on CD.
You convert from 192 down to 44 and say you lose the quality. If you convert, sure. You lose it. But I do it the smart way. I - record - at 44 khz the 192 mastering so the hole sound behaviour is a 1:1 copy WITHOUT converting! ;o) this way you get 192 or 384 without transformation in a 44 khz format! ;o)
@konjunktion26 Like I said I dont really understand........seems like a lot of trouble for such a small gain.24bit 96Khz should be more than enough.Anything past that does not make sence unless everything else is.Recording at 192Khz to put on to youtube is crazy!
Are there going to be more in this series or is this is? This helped me so much! My masters sound so good now and my friends want me to master their songs now lol
It's great to see the mixing and music production community sharing information, openly. It wasn't always like this. It's all about the music, not the individual. thanks Dubspot.
