To get out of the hole continue to walk toward Whiterun. If you go under the companions' hut you can walk through the steps that lead up there and come out right by the priest/altar. At that point you are un-glitched.

you can get out of whiterun and end up right by the rock you have to go under to find the chest. you can go up the stairs to the skyforge and get on the rocks closest to the companions guild. use whirlwind sprint to get on the roof of the companions guild and climb to the end of the roof that is closest to the wall of the city. use whirlwind sprint from the top of the roof so that you land on top of the lookout station that is located on the wall. you can just fall out of whiterun from there.

Thats not a glitch all merchants have these chests somewhere as it contains their inventories to sell. In the fallout 3 they were mostly visable but needed a key to unlock. Im getting sick of people saying that it is a "secret chest" typical console players :/
