You can call Lance the "Greedy Cheeter" all you want, but let's see you hang with him! You Europeans were just crushed when an American boy came in to "your" sport and dominated it for seven years.
@EastCH True pertty much! (Lance) i used too see him get smashed bye the euro riders.. specially the Italian ones.. then all of a sudden he's like super duper ridder!...(an i saw in person not on some video tape!)
Why LeMond had very fast average speed? Because you could go full power all the way knowing it's only 25 kms & the terrain was flat, almost downhill. You can not compare that to 200 kms with climbs. It's mind boggling though that the greedy cheater Lance could go full power for 200 kms going uphill. Thumbs down to Lance. Go Greg go.
@seanreid1970 Pharmstrong is a useless crybaby piece of shit. Lemond didn't have to dope, he had great natural ability and he only trained for the Tour. He could never maintain a high level of fitness for an entire season, LIKE RIDERS DO NOW. He also had bad days on the tour. NO ONE HAS BAD DAYS ANYMORE. They all ride like machines, because they are all medicated. Pharmstrong never beat anyone good either. Lemond raced against 15 guys who could have won the Tour any given year.
@zuzupetals1999 Crybaby didn't start winning in 89 until his trainer gave him "Iron injections" in the Giro when he was so tired. I bet they weren't iron, but testerone.
LeMond's average speed in the time trial, 54.545 km/h, was the fastest in Tour de France stage history; since then, only the 1994 prologue has been faster.[1
On a boat anchor with aero bars? What proof does he have that he was clean? Many others were doping at this time. Testing was very easy to beat back then.
Clearly he could have been using performance enhancing substances.
The main reason that Lemond rode at an all-time record speed in the 1989 Tour de France (when he beat Fignon by 8 seconds overall) is because there was a massive tailwind and the course was point-to-point with a tailwind the entire way. Lemond commented in the video that he thought he "might not gain as much time over Laurent Fignon because a tailwind minimizes the advantage". People complain that Lemond used faster aero bars, but Fignon also used a faster front disk wheel.
The front disk wheel is almost no advantage at all. That's why it is not used nowadays. I wouldn't say Lemond won the Tour because of his handlebars, but Fignon lost it because of his - his own fault, just like Schleck this year. Having said that: with such slim time differences one cannot label a single reason. Many factors throughout the Tour may have had a much bigger influence than 8 seconds.
Lemond was the business. Climb, sprint, time trial; take away the drugs and he would have been unbeatable.

@ahyatt1983 You are so wrong. I loved Greg Lemond because he was a true hero and Lance is just a fucking wanker and cheater.

Greg should be asked to prove that he did not dope during his three tours.
