  • "I realised that everything that exists, all music, comes from Africa. I started to see all the connections of music pointing back to Africa, and I wanted to express all those genres. Like what Sly was trying to do, like what Prince was trying to do, and Jimi too."

    - D'Angelo, Vibe Magazine, 2000

  • l'afrique....racine de tous les négres fondamental...bravo d"angelo...roots c'est important

  • Can't wait to see this man on Saturday at Brixton o2. One of many dreams coming true :)

  • This song is unmatched to this day. I'm glad D'Angelo is back, hopefully he's here to stay!

We need him to bless us with his beautiful talent in this day and age......

  • I Love this song!!!! But Swear yall cant say he dont sound kinda like that homeless guy from off the Pj's(if you black you should know what the Pj's are).

  • "LIKE"??? Ain't there a "LOVE" button? Amazing composition, another of the songs on "Voodoo" nudging me toward placing this album into a category teasing the boundaries of genre, reminiscent of something Quincy Jones did for Jackson 5 right before Michael broke solo, with a vocal melody and style calling to mind George Benson. Far too often, we run the danger, however, of detracting from a song through contextualizing through American music's golden eras of the past. This is an original &

  • & to be applauded all the same by the fact that it does bring to mind such honored company.

  • Interstingly, the pretty Rhodes piano is a very apt metaphor, sounding like the African "thumb piano" or Kalimba running a II-V-I.

  • mystifying

  • Truly my favorite song in the world!

  • OFWGKTA

  • I'm white and im Australian and i love this

  • The song is so freaking original. He wrote this joint after the birth of his son, and really shouts out an amazing tone of pride and joy. Much reminiscent of Stevie Wonder's 'Isn't She Lovely'. The track speaks about an African-American man's quest for identity, after hundreds of years of slavery and oppression. D'Angelo is subtle but explosive, instilling in the listener his pride of his skin, culture and roots. 'Africa' is a tribute and ode to home of D'Angelo's heart, Africa.

  • the chords used just represent the wonder and the tragedy of the history of Africa so well the beat is pure bliss..

  • WE GOT MAXWELL BACK NOW ALL WE'RE MISSING IS D'ANGELO!!!

  • @DrOCkABlEs u r soo right .. the acoustic version is great too..

  • i honestly believe d'angelo is the father of neo soul music.

  • @vidaa82 you have to take in consideration how much d'angelo was inspired by prince. d'angelo even said in the process of making this album that he wondered what princes response would be to the album. i think neo-soul evolved mainly from the soul of marvin gaye, the rawness of prince, and the rebel spirit of bob marley as well as borrowing from jazz and funk. dilla also played a key part in shaping neo soul. i see d'angelo as more of the embodiment of all these influences. d'angelo IS neo-soul

  • @SupremeSupreme777

    i agree

  • @vidaa82 Prince started it in 1986 with the Parade album

  • @vidaa82 I'd respectfully-disagree, folks: Tony, Toni, Tone' are the FATHERS of Neo-Soul!!

  • @SonofSamhein They might be eclectic soul, but neo-soul..? Surely not.. And they don't hold a candle to this man regardless..

  • LOVE THIS !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this song used to put me to sleep back in college d'angelo is one

    of the greats

  • @soulkonducta2 I read somewhere he's been in the studio since last summer, so yeah...he better!

  • Happy New Year, D', wherever you may be. please come back to us THIS decade???????????????

  • I wish I never came to America.....

  • @Rihaddict I use to feel that way, though I'm 22 and remember Neo Soul's heyday. But, I still wonder what it would've been like to be able to enjoy it at this age back then. Ah well, at least we realize what soul sounds like, and it's still out there...you just can't find it on the radio. But we definitely still have our soul singers, the young and unknown and the experienced and known!

  • yo d..miss you man and thank you for blessing us with this beautiful music. we hope you healthy and good that you can share these musical graces that bless every ear for years to come. amen.

  • if you listen to the chords in this song and listen to the chord in john legends "ordinary people" its the same chords but we all know which one is better

It astounds me that no matter how many hundreds of times I hear these songs, they never lose their magic!! You're always feeling it on a new level, the layers never end. This man is a musical GENIUS. Ugh, I could go on FOREVER about how much I love him...

  • i hate song that take to long to start.

  • @MoDizzle92377 sometimes you gotta let the rhythm ride...

  • Is james poyser responsible for this crazy/beautiful instrumental?

  • @captainjorgerules No,it's been written by D, Angie Stone & ?uestLove (who insisted that this tune was included on Voodoo) and according to the album credits (& my ears ;) and except for guitar (Spanky Alford RIP) and drums (?uest) D performed everything else...there's also a sample of the drums intro of I wonder U by Prince (Parade '86)...This song truly is a gem 8)

  • @Fjord76 Thanks man! I figured it would be benefited by the peps in the Soulquarians which two members are involved :]

  • Hey my name is DeAngelo, and I can't stand this freekin guy. Every time I introduce myself there is always someone who asks my when am I gonna come out with another song...it was ok the first thousand times I heard it, but now its just plain irritating

  • @Delo238 I hear you brother. My name is also D'Angelo and I get the same thing. More so when he was bigger. I even had a person ask me "Where you named after him?" and I say " I'm 28 y/o there is no way I can be named after him." I do like his music, so he is holding it down in that sense. And D'Angelo IS NOT his real name.

  • @Delo238 its a honor to have his name!! humble urself trick

  • @Delo238 hey so when are you coming out with a new song?

  • now this should be WC2010 aNTHEM!

  • I think he missed his calling as a preacher....never to late...everything has a time and season.

  • if U noitce the necklaces (ahene) around his neck he aint in2 christianity. If Im not mistaken those symbolize iniation in2 African spiritual practice of some sort...

  • Yes you are 100% correct.

  • you have such a beautiful name. that is so unique and very captivating. I am totally enthralled by the way your name is presented. Oh so beautiful.

  • why are you saying 'you' like you're actually talking to him

  • because she is a female and her name deserved a compliment. i guess you didnt read who i was talking to unless its your girlfriend.

  • lol. how about 'it is what it looks like' necklaces. I'm from South Africa, not everything has a second and/or deeper meaning.

The background, the necklace, the CD's title and the song, it all ads up to bring out a specific scene, atmosphere.

  • S africa may be a lil diff from West namely the Akan & Yuroba/ifa traditions that I am familiar with I know ahene when I see it...

  • It's DEEPER than you "under"stand.

  • Thank you. Bye!

  • @nuges01 yeah. so basically, what your ignorant ass is saying is that african americans arent allowed to connect to their roots, history and heritage. as if we are not ALLOWED to explore and feel connection to or ancestors. f*cking disgusting.

you are clearly still caught up in that slave/colonization mentality. go work on that before you make ignorant comments on youtube that the rest of us have to be subjected to.

    jeez. your parents FAILED.

  • Comment removed

  • @nuges01 the whole context of the reply is belittling and negative. or it can be read as such.
