Can we get rid of that silly 'neo soul' tag that some hack came up with. Soul is good enough. D'Angelo is a musically diverse Soul singer, adept in various styles of popular music, but primarily Soul and Funk. 'Neo soul' is a short lived lable for the contemproary artists who came on to the scene during one of the worst periods in R&B (the mid 90's), and was led by the likes of D'Angelo, E Badu, Maxwell, Lauryn Hill and Jill Scott, 70's inspired soul. That movement peaked in the early 00's.
"I realised that everything that exists, all music, comes from Africa. I started to see all the connections of music pointing back to Africa, and I wanted to express all those genres. Like what Sly was trying to do, like what Prince was trying to do, and Jimi too."
I'm seeing comments like "Magic" & "Music from heaven" .. took the words out my mouth. This song is nothing less than amazing, and D'Angelo is nothing less than genius. I could have this song on repeat forever, and I'd never get sick of it.
I Love this song!!!! But Swear yall cant say he dont sound kinda like that homeless guy from off the Pj's(if you black you should know what the Pj's are).
"LIKE"??? Ain't there a "LOVE" button? Amazing composition, another of the songs on "Voodoo" nudging me toward placing this album into a category teasing the boundaries of genre, reminiscent of something Quincy Jones did for Jackson 5 right before Michael broke solo, with a vocal melody and style calling to mind George Benson. Far too often, we run the danger, however, of detracting from a song through contextualizing through American music's golden eras of the past. This is an original &
The song is so freaking original. He wrote this joint after the birth of his son, and really shouts out an amazing tone of pride and joy. Much reminiscent of Stevie Wonder's 'Isn't She Lovely'. The track speaks about an African-American man's quest for identity, after hundreds of years of slavery and oppression. D'Angelo is subtle but explosive, instilling in the listener his pride of his skin, culture and roots. 'Africa' is a tribute and ode to home of D'Angelo's heart, Africa.
@tvceo420 YES LOVE THE DRUMS VERY SPARCE VERY RAW AND SIMPLE BUT POWERFUL

@vidaa82 you have to take in consideration how much d'angelo was inspired by prince. d'angelo even said in the process of making this album that he wondered what princes response would be to the album. i think neo-soul evolved mainly from the soul of marvin gaye, the rawness of prince, and the rebel spirit of bob marley as well as borrowing from jazz and funk. dilla also played a key part in shaping neo soul. i see d'angelo as more of the embodiment of all these influences. d'angelo IS neo-soul
his best album!!!!!!!!!! took me back. its amazing how music can raise you. for people that say music doesnt influence you or your actions....... stop lying to yourself...
@Rihaddict I use to feel that way, though I'm 22 and remember Neo Soul's heyday. But, I still wonder what it would've been like to be able to enjoy it at this age back then. Ah well, at least we realize what soul sounds like, and it's still out there...you just can't find it on the radio. But we definitely still have our soul singers, the young and unknown and the experienced and known!
yo d..miss you man and thank you for blessing us with this beautiful music. we hope you healthy and good that you can share these musical graces that bless every ear for years to come. amen.

@nuges01 yeah. so basically, what your ignorant ass is saying is that african americans arent allowed to connect to their roots, history and heritage. as if we are not ALLOWED to explore and feel connection to or ancestors. f*cking disgusting.
you are clearly still caught up in that slave/colonization mentality. go work on that before you make ignorant comments on youtube that the rest of us have to be subjected to.
i had this album for 3 years and i liked this song already but i didn't really feel it. 3 years later finaly happened. that was in 2006. one of the best songs in every aspect that i ever heard. "the blood of good is my defence..." he's out of this world!!!

@nuges01 yeah. so basically, what your ignorant ass is saying is that african americans arent allowed to connect to their roots, history and heritage. as if we are not ALLOWED to explore and feel connection to or ancestors. f*cking disgusting.
you are clearly still caught up in that slave/colonization mentality. go work on that before you make ignorant comments on youtube that the rest of us have to be subjected to.
jeez. your parents FAILED.
