  • Ku'u home MEANS : Beloved home - then "O Kahalu'u" means "of Kahalu'u " ! Everyone seems to want their own translation. Ask someone who actually understands the correct connection of the words and the idea . Olelo Hawai'i has prepositions just like other languages. Me ke aloha - Me =possesor of a thing or person, ke=the, Aloha= love. Me Ke= with. Think about it as it is sung. "With aloha for my beloved home, Kuhalu'u ". This is such a beautiful song and Keola makes it even better !

  • @kfwahine Jerry Santos, Hoku Zuttermeister and Barry Kimokeo perform in this video, no Keola, although Keola Beamer does perform his own rendition on his "Mohala Hou" CD. :)

  • I spent several years on Oahu with the military. Married a local. came to love the islands, the kama aina, the food, the culture and the music. Just like the others, it still has the touch of a pretty wahine. God Bless ya Brah for the post.

  • Legend has it that one Sunday, God was kicking back just cruising up in Heaven after church. He wanted to write a "Hawaiian Slack Key" song & this is what He came up with! Nah jus kidding.... MAHALO for uploading this ageless Classic. From Kabul, Afghanistan- Aloooooooha.- T.

  • I lived on Maui for some years--I loved this song then and still do today. I cannot listen to the beautiful lyrics and music without tears--something I cannot say towards any other song I've ever listened to.

    Blessings and Peace--

    Mahalo to Jerry...

  • Does anyone know what the line in Hawaiian translate to? Thanks!

  • @edejan The few Native Hawaiian words in the song are easily understandable to a “local,”

but not necessarily a Native Hawaiian audience. “Me ke aloha ku`u home o Kahalu`u”

simply means “with love of my home of Kahalu`u.” References are made to the “`o`opu”

(the fresh water shrimp) and the gift of a song (which was prized above all other gifts).

  • Mahalo Jerry for the all of the beautiful music you've given us.

  • one of my favorites... reminds me of my Grandfather.. i tear up everytime i hear it

  • Aloha from Singapore! Mahalo for posting this. Ku'u Home O Kahalu'u is such a beautiful song. My other favorite is Napua Ili Kalima. Every year I come to Hawaii, Olomana at the Hilton is a fixture on my schedule. I hope they continue to sing for us for many years to come and please find them a stage where all four of them could perform together.

  • Mahalo from Colorado. I moved here about 16 years ago. I never lived in Kahalu'u, I lived in Pearl City. But, hiked in the Koolaus. I miss my home Hawai'i!!! Thank you for sharing this aloha.

  • Aloha wau i kēia hīmeni.

Nā manawa apau loa i koʻu puʻuwai.

  • Once upon a time I lived 16 years on Oahu and loved the Ballad Hawaiian Songs, this being one of my favorites. I love the way Jerry Santos makes the sound of the babbling stream, etc. He puts expression in his playing and his voice is sounds very nice too.

  • How awesome to have memories of this for you who lived on the island. I didn't grow up their but enjoy the music and dance now.

  • For Jake and all those on the windward side...

  • This song always brings me home to Kane'ohe...

  • I remember seing him live at the hilton in waiki every summer. We'd get guava juice and by the end of the night be sleeping on the couches, while our parents talked with him and we'd fall asleep to the most beautiful sound in the world, aloha.

  • I'm from Canada, I play a lot of music myself, learnt this song on the piano....enjoy all types and to me this is probably one of the nicest songs ever written. I first heard the song on a visit to Hawaii in the early 80's ...bought the album, the song plays in my mind all the time...I share it with other's and are moved by it. Excellent!

  • yah? what key do you play it in?

  • Beautiful!

  • absolutely one of the best old hawaiian music ever

  • I can close my eyes while listening to this and see someone long ago riding those horses in the tradewinds at the base of the Koolaus in Kahaluu.

  • one of the best

  • I saw Jerry and Olomana perform at the Hawaiian Hilton Village on Oahu this past February. I had never seen them perform before that, but had all their albums/CD's. I have been a fan of theirs since 1980 when we moved to Hawaii. I was able to talk to Jerry before the show and he was gracious enough to let me get a picture with him. It was a great great show. They are scheduled to be the Hilton's house band through 2010. If you get a chance, see them. You won't be disappointed.

  • i miss my uncle robert.. another musician lost to drugs..

  • Robert Beaumont is deeply missed by Olomana fans everywhere.

  • Very fond memories of childhood days; and, your music of Kahaluu touches my heart deeply. Lauraine S.

  • so long ago it seems it was a dream. Chucks Hi Kai, Cindy Combs, Momi Davis, Ed Freitas, Ned and the Gang. Miss ya bra, gotta come town and see you.... aloha Rikor.

  • I remember seeing Jerry perform at the old Black Angus Restaurant in Waikiki in the early 70's. This is still my favorite song and great to hear Jerry's beautiful voice and unique pickin' again. Aloha from the Big Island.

  • how about Chuck's waterfront Hawaii Kai Tuesdays and Thursdays. We lived there, Cindy Combs, Blah & Cyril P, Momi Davis. You never knew who might show up.... good times and still bright memories, Rikor

  • Grateful to Hoaikane for posting this Olomana hit. I no longer live in the snow and ice of Michigan, but the white sand beaches of Panhandle Florida are not ka aina. Mahalo from a Palolo boy in the Deep South.

  • @thefisherking78

This song makes me cry no matter where I hear it.... even if Im in sweet Kahaluu. God Bless Braddah... Nothing like the windward side.

  • BIG knot. And remembering how it wasbefore Jerry lost Robert.

    Sweet beyond words.

  • Every time I hear this song, I get a big knot in my throat and get tears in my eyes. Anyone can relate to this song, no matter where they live. It takes you back to your youth...going back home (if you left) and finding that it is not the same as it was when you left...neither are you, but the memories are sweet. Olomana sings it the best. I love this song. Mahloa nui loa for posting.

  • This guy and his band, Olomana, played at my hotel in Honolulu. They were very good. There were quite a few great acts that performed there at the Hilton Hawaiian Village while i was there. Acts like Olomana, Beach five, and others. And what a great hotel. I recommend HHV to anyone staying in honolulu. Right on Waikiki, and has great rooms and things to do. Kudo's on the video by the way. Mahalo for the music!

  • Still the best version -- by Jerry Santos himself! A song that always makes me cry big-time, especially because I'm now living on the mainland.

  • Ok tears right now! I think this is the first time I have heard Jerry Santos and new who it was. I listen to the Hapa version which makes me bawl as Keli`i's voice is absolutely breathtaking.

  • Could you please tell us how you have your guitar tuned? Thank you.

  • He has it tuned so that playing open strings play an E chord.

    (E, B, E, G#. B, E)
