Well, as a semantic thing, the way the term "8-bit" is used nowadays is meaningless 99% of the time anyway. Even more so when it's applied to a sound chip, which I have a hard time seeing how any of them would be labeled as "8 bit" from any technical standpoint. Unless it's specified what exactly is being measured, then it's just slang pseudo-jargon for "old".

This seems like what a Commodore SID could sound like, but I don't dispute the waveform issues, that's beyond me. :)

I don't think this is really 8-bit, but an MIDI converted with a program which assigns each channel a lo-fi sounding (but not really 8-bit) sound. It doesn't sound like something that an old console could generate, both because of some of the waveforms used and each synth's volume envelope. Carefully compare the generated sounds to those in a track such as this to maybe hear what I mean:

Yeah, I just noticed that. I booted up Daggerfall today to see that I could not traverse the entire world of Tamriel like I could in Arena, and I was disappointed to see that there was only the Imperial City in Cyrodiil (known in Arena/Daggerfall as the Imperial Province) and I don't think I saw much of Vvardenfall either in the Morrowind region. I am a little saddened though by the extreme difficulty of Arena and Daggerfall since I get punked out by rats really quickly...

The ability to zoom in on each region of Tamriel and see all the towns and cities clearly marked with cartoony icons was much more visually appealing than the little dots which could only distinguish locations with a colour code.

I wouldn't say the series has gone downhill at all. The very fact that Oblivion was ported to consoles was so that people who didn't own a bitchin' fast pc does not mean the series has started to fall in quality. I love Morrowind, and Oblivion too, yet I am undecided as to which I enjoy better. Oblivion definitely improved the combat system since Arena -> Morrowind all had the same combat system where you strike and hopefully hit your target.

They sold Oblivion in much more quantities and made a fortune because it went MASS MARKET - more simple, less demanding and instant gratification. They will do the same with Skyrim. To make a game even close to morrowind, they have to not make it for consoles, and cater for the PC market first, and they will not want to make so little money... so .....

I loved the fact that the races in Morrowind didn't all look like the same thing. There were very clear differences in the races. In Oblivion it was the color. All the faces had the same shape, and all the voices were so similar.
